Where the ProLiant DL380 Gen9 stands today
On the DL380 Gen9, HPE sets warranty and contract end dates per serial number rather than publishing a public date for the model. To find yours, use HPE Support Center Warranty Check: put in the serial number (and the product number if HPE asks for it) and note the coverage start and end dates; you may be asked to sign in with an HPE account. HPE's end-of-life PCNs are also gated behind an HPE Support Center sign-in, and no public HPE EOL notice for Gen9 was found.
HPE's public evidence on sales status is the DL380 Gen9 Worldwide QuickSpecs, last revised as V47 on 2 December 2019, which carry an undated RETIRED banner saying the base products 'are now considered obsolete and are no longer available for sale'. The only end-of-life and end-of-service dates found for the model come from trackers, and on this model they agree. Park Place, whose library has represented the Service Express database too since January 2026, lists End of Life on 22 July 2020 and End of Service Life on 22 July 2025 for the DL380 Gen9 CTO chassis, and eosl.date, a separate tracker, gives the same 22 July 2025 for end of support. That date has passed, but two trackers agreeing does not make it an HPE date.
HPE does not publish public end-of-support dates for ProLiant server models. Warranty and contract end dates are set per serial number. Go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck), enter the serial number (and the product number if asked), and read the coverage start and end dates. HPE may ask you to sign in with an HPE account. HPE's EOL PCNs can only be read after signing in to HPE Support Center.
What still works after HPE support ends
Firmware access for a DL380 Gen9 without cover is set out in HPE's SPP validation note. To download the full Service Pack for ProLiant you need an active warranty or an HPE support agreement; anyone without either is pointed to HPE sales, an HPE partner or a reseller for the SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD. iLO, controller components, drivers and safety and security firmware fall outside that check, and HPE Support Center serves them without entitlement validation, subject to licence terms.
HPE's April 2022 Gen9.0 Post Production SPP release notes say two incompatible things: that the Gen9-only SPPs from 2021.10.0 onward still need entitlement verification, and that 'The Gen9 post production SPP can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement.' Trying the download with your own HPE account is the practical check. HPE's post-production approach freezes a generation's firmware and drivers, supports them through that generation's EOS (end of support), and issues later updates only as hot fixes.
- HPE's SPP validation note says you need an active warranty or HPE support agreement to download the Service Pack for ProLiant. Without coverage, requests for the SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD go to HPE sales, an HPE partner or a reseller. The same note says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers can be downloaded from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, though licence terms still apply. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's Gen9.0 Post Production SPP release notes (April 2022, 'Final Version') contradict themselves. They say entitlement verification is 'still required for the Gen9 only (2021.10.0 and later)' SPP. They also say 'The Gen9 post production SPP can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement.' Check with your own HPE account. What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ProLiant DL380 Gen9
Drive configuration is the first thing to pin down on a DL380 Gen9. HPE offered four layouts: 8 SFF, field-upgradable to 16 or 24 SFF (an optional Universal Media Bay or 6 NVMe can be added); 24 SFF with an optional 2 SFF rear cage; 12 LFF with an optional 3 LFF rear cage; or 4 LFF. Controllers vary with the model: the HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i, the Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2G or P840/4G, or the Smart Array P840ar/2G. A contract should record the cage, any rear or NVMe kit and the exact controller fitted.
Spares need matching with care. HPE does not support mixing 2133 and 2400 MHz memory, mixing RDIMM and LRDIMM, or mixing E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors in one server, and NVDIMM (up to 128 GB) is supported only with v4 processors and RDIMMs. The two HPE Flexible Slot power bays take 500W Platinum, 800W Platinum (also in 96%-efficiency, -48VDC and 227VAC/380VDC versions) or 1400W Platinum Plus supplies, and mixing supplies is not supported, so a replacement has to match the supply already fitted. Add the iLO 4 controller (firmware iLO4 2.0, 4 GB NAND, dedicated iLO connector) to the list. Server third-party maintenance typically brings diagnosis, parts replacement and engineer attendance, and hardware break-fix support describes the repair-on-failure side.

Extend or refresh the ProLiant DL380 Gen9?
Keeping a DL380 Gen9 in service on maintenance makes sense when the configuration is settled and the software stack already sits within HPE's Gen9 limits, such as vSphere 7.0 U3 or a non-virtualised OS that is not due for an upgrade. A unit still on E5-2600 v3 processors may also have room to grow: HPE's QuickSpecs list a field upgrade from v3 to v4 as supported, provided the two are not mixed in one server.
The case for refresh rests on software. HPE marks vSphere 8.0 through 9.1 'No Gen9 support', its last Custom Image for Gen9 is vSphere 7.0 U3 (July 2022), SPP Gen9.1 is the last Service Pack for ProLiant for Gen9, and post-production updates come only as hot fixes. On Linux, the HPE-DB-2016 key has to be enrolled on Gen9 hosts with Secure Boot to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. If your next OS or hypervisor step crosses those lines, look at the refurbished ProLiant configurator before signing a multi-year maintenance term.
- HPE's DL380 Gen9 QuickSpecs are marked RETIRED: 'the base products listed herein are now considered obsolete and are no longer available for sale.' (support.hpe.com)
- HPE calls SPP 2022.03.1 / Gen9.1 the 'Last SPP to support Gen9'. (vibsdepot.hpe.com)
- VMware: HPE marks vSphere 8.0 through 9.1 'No Gen9 support'. The last HPE Custom Image for Gen9 is vSphere 7.0 U3 (Jul 2022). (vibsdepot.hpe.com)
- How HPE handles post-production servers: a generation's firmware and drivers are frozen into a post-production SPP and supported 'through the EOS (end of support) for that server generation'. Any later updates come out only as hot fixes. (downloads.hpe.com)
- Spares compatibility: HPE does not support mixing 2133 and 2400 MHz memory, mixing RDIMM and LRDIMM, or mixing E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors in the same server. (support.hpe.com)
- Gen9 Linux hosts with Secure Boot enabled need the HPE-DB-2016 key enrolled before they can load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. (downloads.hpe.com)

Related models
Within HPE's Gen9 generation, the DL380 Gen9 is the 2U, two-socket server, and its own predecessor was the ProLiant DL380p Gen8. Because HPE attaches the 'Last SPP to support Gen9' and 'No Gen9 support' labels to the generation, the same software limits are worth checking on any other Gen9 servers in an estate, such as those covered on ProLiant DL360 Gen9 end of life and ProLiant ML350 Gen9 end of life; each of those pages lists that model's own tracker entries. One generation on, the ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is the next model in the same DL380 line, covered on ProLiant DL380 Gen10 end of life.

Questions people ask about the ProLiant DL380 Gen9
Is the DL380 Gen9 end of life?
HPE has retired it from sale; its QuickSpecs carry a RETIRED banner calling the base products obsolete. HPE has not made a model-wide end-of-support date public. For the DL380 Gen9 CTO chassis, Park Place lists End of Life on 22 July 2020 and End of Service Life on 22 July 2025, and eosl.date gives 22 July 2025 as end of support, but both are third-party trackers.
When does HPE stop supporting the DL380 Gen9?
HPE ties support end dates to each serial number rather than publishing a public date for the model. Enter your serial number at HPE Support Center Warranty Check to see your unit's coverage end date; HPE's EOL PCNs need an HPE Support Center sign-in. The 22 July 2025 date seen online is a tracker date, not HPE's.
Can I still get firmware for the DL380 Gen9?
SPP Gen9.1 is HPE's last Service Pack for ProLiant for Gen9. HPE's validation note puts the SPP behind an active warranty or support agreement, but iLO, drivers, controller components and safety and security firmware can be fetched from HPE Support Center with no entitlement check, subject to licence terms. HPE's Gen9.0 post-production release notes say both that entitlement is still required and that the post-production SPP needs only an HPE Passport account, so check with your own account.
What came after the DL380 Gen9?
The next model in the same 2U DL380 line is the ProLiant DL380 Gen10, covered on ProLiant DL380 Gen10 end of life. If you need vSphere 8 or 9 with HPE support, HPE marks those releases 'No Gen9 support', so the move has to be to newer hardware.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a DL380 Gen9?
A quote can be requested. As a rule, third-party maintenance provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and its cover can extend beyond a vendor's end of support. Include the drive cage and any rear or NVMe kit, the Smart Array controller, the power supply rating and the processor generation, since HPE does not support mixing v3 and v4 processors.
