ProLiant DL360 Gen9 end of life

The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 is retired, but HPE publishes no public model-wide end-of-support date for it: the 22 July 2025 end-of-service date attached to it comes from two third-party trackers, Park Place and eosl.date, not from HPE. HPE's own documents confirm the 1U server is no longer sold and has reached the end of its Service Pack line, with SPP Gen9.1 named the 'Last SPP to support Gen9' and vSphere 8.0 through 9.1 marked 'No Gen9 support'. Each DL360 Gen9's own cover is tied to its serial number.

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the ProLiant DL360 Gen9 stands today

'Retired' here refers to HPE's QuickSpecs banner for the DL360 Gen9, which says the base products 'are now considered obsolete and are no longer available for sale'. The banner is undated, and the North America edition of those QuickSpecs was last revised as V48 on 1 July 2019, noting that it is no longer updated. No public HPE end-of-life notice for Gen9 was found, and HPE's lifecycle notices, its Product Change Notifications (PCNs), open only after signing in to HPE Support Center.

That leaves the trackers. Park Place's EOSL library, which since the 6 January 2026 merger also stands for the Service Express EOSL database, lists an End of Life date of 22 July 2020 and an End of Service Life date of 22 July 2025 for the DL360 Gen9 CTO chassis. eosl.date, a separate tracker, also gives 22 July 2025 as end of support. The date is past, but it is a third-party reading, not HPE's. For the date that governs your own server, open HPE Support Center Warranty Check, enter the serial number (and the product number if asked) and read the warranty or contract start and end dates; HPE may ask you to sign in first.

Finding the date for your own unit

HPE does not publish public end-of-support dates for ProLiant server models. Warranty and contract end dates are set per serial number. Go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck), enter the server serial number (and the product number if asked), and read the warranty or contract start and end dates. HPE may ask you to sign in with an HPE account. HPE's lifecycle PCNs (EOL notices) can only be read after signing in to HPE Support Center.

What still works after HPE support ends

HPE's SPP validation note draws a line through firmware access. Downloading the full Service Pack for ProLiant needs an active warranty or HPE support agreement; without coverage, requests for the SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD go to HPE sales, an HPE partner or a reseller. The same note allows ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers to be downloaded from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, although licence terms still apply.

HPE's Gen9.0 Post Production SPP release notes (April 2022) pull in three directions. One passage says entitlement verification 'is still required for the Gen9 only (2021.10.0 and later)' SPP; another says both download routes need an HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement; a third says the Gen9 post-production SPP 'can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement'. Test the download with your own HPE account. The same notes say a post-production generation's frozen firmware and drivers are 'supported through the EOS (end of support) for that server generation', with anything later shipped only as a hot fix.

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ProLiant DL360 Gen9

A maintenance schedule for the DL360 Gen9 should start with the drive cage, because this 1U chassis was built three ways: 8 SFF (with an optional Universal Media Bay or NVMe), 10 SFF using the optional 2 SFF kit, or 4 LFF. The NVMe option gives 4 SAS/SATA plus 6 NVMe bays. The storage controller varies with the model tier: entry builds used the HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i or the H240ar Smart HBA, while base and performance models carry the HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2GB.

Power comes from two HPE Flexible Slot bays: 500W Platinum, 800W Platinum (also offered as 800W Titanium, -48VDC and 227VAC/380VDC versions), 1400W Platinum Plus, and an optional Flex Slot Battery Backup unit, so DC-fed or battery-backed units need those parts named. Memory spares must respect HPE's rule against mixing 2133 and 2400 MHz DIMMs across the 24 slots, and the two sockets cannot mix E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors. The iLO 4 management controller (firmware iLO4 2.0 or later, 4 GB NAND, dedicated iLO 4 connector) belongs in scope too. Third-party maintenance generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and can run past a vendor's end of support. See what third-party maintenance covers, and use the maintenance coverage builder to list these parts when requesting a quote.

Extend or refresh the ProLiant DL360 Gen9?

Extending a DL360 Gen9 on maintenance is easiest to justify when its software already sits where HPE left Gen9 and is not expected to move: a host on vSphere 7.0 U3 from the last HPE Custom Image for Gen9 (July 2022), for example, or a bare-metal role with no OS upgrade planned. HPE's Service Pack line for Gen9 ends at SPP Gen9.1, with any later updates for a post-production generation issued only as hot fixes, so the contract's main job is the physical parts.

The argument for refresh is about the platform's ceiling. HPE marks vSphere 8.0, 8.0 U1, 8.0 U2, 8.0 U3, 9.0 and 9.1 'No Gen9 support', so a move to vSphere 8 or 9 with HPE support means newer hardware, and no Service Pack for ProLiant later than Gen9.1 covers Gen9. Linux estates have one more step to plan: Gen9 hosts with Secure Boot enabled need the HPE-DB-2016 key (in HPE's 'hexane' package) in NVRAM before they can load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. If a hypervisor or OS move is planned, compare refurbished HPE ProLiant servers with the maintenance quote.

  • HPE's DL360 Gen9 QuickSpecs are marked RETIRED: 'the base products listed herein are now considered obsolete and are no longer available for sale.' (support.hpe.com)
  • HPE calls SPP 2022.03.1 / Gen9.1 the 'Last SPP to support Gen9'. No later Service Pack for ProLiant covers Gen9. (vibsdepot.hpe.com)
  • VMware: HPE marks vSphere 8.0, 8.0 U1, 8.0 U2, 8.0 U3, 9.0 and 9.1 'No Gen9 support'. The last HPE Custom Image that supports Gen9 is vSphere 7.0 U3 (Jul 2022). Moving to vSphere 8 or 9 with HPE support means moving to newer hardware. (vibsdepot.hpe.com)
  • How HPE handles post-production servers: when a server generation goes 'Post-Production', its firmware and drivers are frozen into a post-production SPP. These are 'supported through the EOS (end of support) for that server generation', and any later updates come out only as hot fixes. (downloads.hpe.com)
  • Gen9 servers running Linux with Secure Boot enabled need the HPE-DB-2016 Secure Boot key in NVRAM before they can load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. The key is in HPE's 'hexane' package. (downloads.hpe.com)

The DL360 Gen9 is HPE's 1U, two-socket Gen9 ProLiant, built on Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4, and it followed the ProLiant DL360p Gen8 in the DL360 line. HPE words its last-SPP and vSphere markings for Gen9 as a generation rather than for this model alone; two other Gen9 models are covered on ProLiant DL380 Gen9 end of life and ProLiant ML350 Gen9 end of life, each with its own tracker entries. The next model in the same DL360 line is the ProLiant DL360 Gen10; see ProLiant DL360 Gen10 end of life.

Each bar runs from release to the milestone that marks end of support for the model as a whole. Amber bars end on a third-party tracker's date, not the vendor's. A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the ProLiant DL360 Gen9

Is the HPE DL360 Gen9 end of life?

HPE has retired it: the QuickSpecs describe the base products as 'obsolete' and 'no longer available for sale'. HPE has not published a public model-wide end-of-support date, though. The 22 July 2025 end-of-service date you will find comes from the third-party trackers Park Place and eosl.date, and Park Place, in its entry for the DL360 Gen9 CTO chassis, also lists an End of Life date of 22 July 2020.

When does HPE stop supporting the DL360 Gen9?

HPE does not publish a public model-wide date; warranty and contract cover is set per serial number. Check your unit at HPE Support Center Warranty Check using its serial number (HPE may ask you to sign in), and note that HPE's lifecycle PCNs can only be read after signing in to HPE Support Center. The 22 July 2025 date quoted for this model comes from trackers, not from HPE.

Can I still download firmware for the DL360 Gen9 without a support contract?

Partly. HPE's SPP validation note says the SPP needs an active warranty or support agreement, and without coverage, requests for the SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD go to HPE sales, an HPE partner or a reseller; safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers can be downloaded without entitlement validation, subject to licence terms. HPE's Gen9.0 post-production SPP release notes contradict themselves on entitlement, so test the download with your own HPE account. HPE names SPP Gen9.1 the 'Last SPP to support Gen9'.

What came after the DL360 Gen9?

The next model in the same DL360 line is the ProLiant DL360 Gen10. On the Gen9 itself, HPE's Custom Images for Gen9 end with vSphere 7.0 U3 (July 2022), and vSphere 8.0 through 9.1 carry HPE's 'No Gen9 support' label, so vSphere 8 or 9 with HPE support means moving to newer hardware.

Can I get third-party maintenance for a DL360 Gen9?

You can request a quote for it. Third-party maintenance generally covers fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and can continue beyond a vendor's end of support. Give the drive layout, the storage controller (B140i, H240ar or P440ar), the power supply type and the serial number so the cover matches the unit; HPE third-party maintenance has more on cover for HPE servers.
