Juniper QFX5100 end of life

The Juniper QFX5100 is end-of-life and past Last Order, but most SKUs are still inside Juniper support: Juniper's published End of Support date is 1 July 2027 for the QFX5100-24Q, -48S, -48SH, -48T and -48TH system SKUs and 31 December 2027 for the QFX5100-96S. The exception is the QFX5100-24Q-AA, whose End of Support on 31 August 2025 has passed. With the main date under nine months away, now is the time to choose between renewing Juniper Care, third-party cover and refresh.

QFX5100 support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the QFX5100 stands today

Juniper retired the QFX5100 in stages, with separate rows on its QFX Series Hardware Dates & Milestones page (last updated 15 September 2026). The main system SKUs, 3AFI/3AFO, D-3AFI/AFO, DC and -T variants included, were announced end of life on 30 April 2021, with Last Order on 1 July 2022 and the Last Date to Convert Warranty on 1 July 2023; Juniper's Junos OS dates page puts the 24Q, 48S and 48T SKUs in TSB17913. The 2U QFX5100-96S, with its DC and fan SKUs, has its own row, which the Junos OS dates page ties to TSB69612: announced 25 May 2022, Last Order 31 December 2022, Last Date to Convert Warranty 31 December 2023. Spare -48TH-CHAS and -48SH-CHAS chassis reached Last Order on 15 January 2023, the day their EOL was announced.

Juniper's Same Day and Next Day Support Discontinued columns match End of Support: 1 July 2027 for the main SKUs, 31 December 2027 for the 96S. That fits the Care rule that part numbers with an EOL or Last Order date on or after 1 June 2018 keep all RMA service levels until End of Support unless the notice says otherwise. To place a unit, take its chassis SKU from show chassis hardware and find that SKU on the QFX Series page; a site running both 48S and 96S switches has two End of Support dates to plan around.

Finding the date for your own unit

Juniper publishes dates per SKU, and the dates differ by QFX5100 variant. Read the chassis SKU (for example with 'show chassis hardware') and match it on https://support.juniper.net/support/eol/product/qfx_series/: 24Q/48S/48SH/48T/48TH system SKUs reach End of Support 2027-07-01, 96S SKUs 2027-12-31, and 24Q-AA 2025-08-31.

What still works after Juniper Networks support ends

With every QFX5100 SKU past Last Order, Juniper sells no new Care contracts for them. An existing one can be renewed only if the renewal starts on the day it expires, with no upgrade of service level and no way back for a lapsed contract. For the hardware and for its embedded operating system software alike, the Care service description puts Juniper under no obligation to provide support services of any kind once End of Support has passed.

Software has a published extension here. Juniper's Junos OS dates page moves Junos OS 21.4 End of Support from its standard 20 June 2025 to 1 July 2027 for the QFX5100-24Q/48S/48T SKUs listed in TSB17913 and to 31 December 2027 for the QFX5100-96S SKUs listed in TSB69612. Juniper's September 2026 Junos OS installation guide makes a service contract and an access account prerequisites for downloading Junos OS from Juniper's site, which is one more reason to renew without a break.

  • Juniper's EOL policy defines End of Support as the last date for maintenance support: access to Juniper technical support engineers, software releases, online tools and hardware replacement. (support.juniper.net)
  • Juniper's Care service description (Nov 2025) says that after End of Support Juniper is under no obligation to provide support services of any kind for the affected hardware or its embedded operating system software. (support.juniper.net)
  • Juniper's Junos OS dates page extends Junos OS 21.4 End of Support to 2027-07-01 for the QFX5100-24Q/48S/48T SKUs listed in TSB17913 and to 2027-12-31 for the QFX5100-96S SKUs listed in TSB69612. The standard 21.4 End of Support is 2025-06-20. (support.juniper.net)
  • To download Junos OS from Juniper's download site you need a service contract and an access account (Junos OS Software Installation and Upgrade Guide, published 2026-09-08). (juniper.net)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Juniper Care (renewal of existing contracts only) — These SKUs are past Last Order, so no new support contracts are sold. Existing contracts can be renewed only if the renewal starts the day the current contract expires, with no lapse. Service levels cannot be upgraded, lapsed contracts cannot be reinstated, and after End of Support Juniper has no obligation to provide support of any kind. (support.juniper.net)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the QFX5100

Four hardware shapes share the QFX5100 name. The QFX5100-48S and -48SH carry 48 SFP+ and 6 QSFP+ ports, the -48T and -48TH carry 48 10GBASE-T and 6 QSFP+, and the -24Q has 24 QSFP+ ports with two expansion bays for the QFX-EM-4Q or EX4600-EM-8F; all of these are 1U with five fan modules. The QFX5100-96S is 2U, with 96 SFP+ and 8 QSFP+ ports and three fan modules. Standard models pair a 1.5 GHz dual-core Intel CPU with 8 GB of memory and a 32 GB SSD; the 24Q-AA has a 2.5 GHz four-core CPU, 32 GB of memory and a 128 GB SSD.

Each chassis takes one or two AC or DC power supplies, and both must be installed for redundancy; mixing AC with DC, or airflow directions, in one chassis is not supported. A QFX Virtual Chassis holds up to ten members, and a Virtual Chassis Fabric supports 20 QFX5100 and EX4300 devices, up to four of them QFX5100 spines, so record every fabric member and its role. The two -24Q modules need care: both appear in Juniper's EX4600 notice TSB109286 with Last Order on 29 December 2026, and because the earlier of conflicting dates applies to a FRU under the Care rules, TSB109286's 29 December 2031 End of Support should not be read as extending support for modules in a QFX5100-24Q past the chassis's 1 July 2027. Juniper third-party maintenance typically provides diagnosis, parts and engineers for an estate like this, including after Juniper's dates pass.

Extend or refresh the QFX5100?

Up to 1 July 2027, or 31 December 2027 for the 96S, a Juniper Care contract renewed without a gap keeps its service level, with Same Day and Next Day support listed to those dates; for the 24Q, 48S, 48T and 96S SKUs Juniper names in its Junos OS 21.4 extension, the software dates run to the same days. Beyond them, third-party hardware cover can keep QFX5100s in service: a leaf or spine with a stable configuration and traffic protected by other controls can reasonably run that way while a refresh is planned. List SKUs, modules and fabric roles when you request a quote through the maintenance coverage builder.

Refresh should come first where a switch carries traffic that needs Junos fixes beyond Juniper's 2027 software dates, or where you will want new -24Q expansion modules after 29 December 2026. The next model in the same QFX5000 line is the QFX5120. Juniper's QFX Series EOL page notes that its 'SKU transformation' announcements, such as the QFX5120-48Y one, do not mean the underlying product is end-of-sale or end-of-life.

  • Both QFX5100-24Q expansion modules (see Port configurations), the QFX-EM-4Q and the EX4600-EM-8F, are listed in Juniper's EX4600 EOL notice TSB109286 with Last Order 2026-12-29. New spare modules can be ordered only until then. (support.juniper.net)
  • Juniper's Care rules say FRUs installed in a chassis generally follow that chassis's EOL milestones. Where a FRU and its chassis have separate EOL notices, the earlier of any conflicting milestone dates applies to the FRU. So the 2031-12-29 End of Support in TSB109286 should not be read as extending support for modules in a QFX5100-24Q past the chassis's 2027-07-01. (support.juniper.net)
  • For part numbers whose EOL/Last Order date falls on or after 1 June 2018, Juniper keeps all RMA service levels, including Same Day and Next Day, until End of Support unless the EOL notice says otherwise. The QFX page shows Same Day and Next Day support continuing to 2027-07-01 (main SKUs) and 2027-12-31 (96S). (support.juniper.net)
  • The QFX5100-24Q-AA-AFI/AFO and the QFX-PFA-4Q module have their own, earlier EOL notice. Their End of Support, 2025-08-31, has already passed. (support.juniper.net)
  • The QFX Series EOL page notes that Juniper's 'SKU transformation' announcements, such as the QFX5120-48Y SKU transformation, do not mean the underlying product is end-of-sale or end-of-life. (support.juniper.net)

Read the EX4600 end of life page alongside this one, since the QFX-EM-4Q and EX4600-EM-8F modules that fill the QFX5100-24Q's bays are listed in the EX4600's notice, TSB109286. The group's remaining pages are on two Juniper EX switch families, the EX2200 and EX3300, and on the SRX300 Series firewalls.

Questions people ask about the QFX5100

Is the Juniper QFX5100 end of life?

Yes. Every QFX5100 SKU is end-of-life and past Last Order, but most are still within Juniper support: Juniper lists End of Support as 1 July 2027 for the 24Q, 48S, 48SH, 48T and 48TH system SKUs and 31 December 2027 for the 96S. The 24Q-AA, together with the QFX-PFA-4Q module, already passed End of Support on 31 August 2025.

When does Juniper stop supporting the QFX5100-48S?

Juniper's QFX Series milestone page gives 1 July 2027 as End of Support for the QFX5100-48S system SKUs, with Same Day and Next Day support listed to the same date. Spare -48SH-CHAS and -48TH-CHAS chassis reach End of Support on 1 July 2027 too.

Is Junos OS 21.4 still supported on the QFX5100?

For the SKUs Juniper names, yes, on an extended timeline. Juniper's Junos OS dates page extends 21.4 End of Support to 1 July 2027 for the QFX5100-24Q/48S/48T SKUs in TSB17913 and to 31 December 2027 for the 96S SKUs in TSB69612, against a standard date of 20 June 2025. Downloads from Juniper's site require a service contract and an access account.

What happened to the QFX5100-24Q-AA?

The QFX5100-24Q-AA-AFI/AFO and the QFX-PFA-4Q module had their own, earlier notice from Juniper, with Last Order on 31 August 2020 and End of Support on 31 August 2025. That date has passed, so these units are outside Juniper support while the other QFX5100 SKUs are not yet.

What came after the QFX5100?

The QFX5120 is the next model in the same QFX5000 line. Juniper's QFX5100 bulletins, TSB17913 and TSB69612, need a support-portal login, so this page goes by the product line rather than a Juniper statement. Use the server and network end-of-life checker for any other Juniper hardware you are planning around.
