NetApp E-Series E2800 end of life

The NetApp E-Series E2800 is end of availability but still supported: NetApp's E-Series documentation says the E2800 storage systems 'are end-of-availability (EOA) products and are no longer available for purchase, but still supported.' NetApp's own dated EOA and EOS notices could not be read publicly, so the hardware end date given here is a third-party one: Park Place Technologies' EOSL library lists 30 September 2030 as end of service life for the E2812, E2824 and E2860. On the software side, the E2800 still appears under SANtricity OS 11.90.x, the newest line in NetApp's version table that names it, with support dates shown as 'TBD'.

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the NetApp E-Series E2800 stands today

Park Place lists three E2800 models, the E2812, E2824 and E2860, each with 'End of Service Life September 30, 2030'. Only the E2860 60-slot page adds a Park Place 'End of Life' date, 11 August 2025; the E2812 and E2824 pages have none. Under NetApp's EOA policy EOS is 'typically 5 years after the EOA date', so the 2030 date is consistent with Park Place's 2025 one, but NetApp's own E2800 dates remain unconfirmed. eosl.date, which calls the E2800 'the current supported model' with no EOS date, contradicts NetApp's EOA statement and is not relied on here.

Software support dates for the E2800 are public in a way the hardware dates are not. NetApp's Software Version Support page lists the E2800/EF280 under SANtricity OS 11.80.x, which passed End of Full Support on 31 March 2026 and reaches End of Version Support on 31 March 2027, and under 11.90.x, with both dates 'TBD'. For hardware dates, NetApp says they can be found in Hardware Universe or the Support Site Product Communique, but on 8 October 2026 Hardware Universe and the EOA Platforms page both redirected to a sign-in. A specific array's contract or warranty details need a non-technical case, per NetApp's KB.

Finding the date for your own unit

NetApp publishes EOA and EOS dates per platform or component. Its EOA policy KB (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/Why_does_the_latest_software_release_not_support_my_hardware_or_platform) says the dates 'can be found in Hardware Universe'. The public summary of NetApp's KB (https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/How_to_check_End_of_Support_and_End_of_Availability_for_NetApp_products) points to Hardware Universe or the NetApp Support Site Product Communique. On 8 Oct 2026, Hardware Universe (https://hwu.netapp.com) and the EOA Platforms page (https://mysupport.netapp.com/info/eoa/df_eoa_category_page.html?category=Platforms) both redirected to a NetApp sign-in. SANtricity OS release support dates are public at https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/info/version-support (E-Series SANtricity OS rows). For a specific array's contract or warranty, the public part of NetApp's KB (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/How_to_find_contract_details_such_as_warranties) says to 'open a non-technical case'.

What still works after NetApp support ends

NetApp still supports the E2800, but it already labels its E2800 maintenance content 'provided for reference only' because the model is EOA. SANtricity OS falls under NetApp's General Software Version Support Policy: Full Support for the latest two Feature Versions (N and N-1); 12 months of Limited Support for N-2 once N is available; then, after the End of Version Support date, 36 months of Self-Service Support in which documentation stays available, before the version becomes Obsolete. NetApp's definitions provide no Service Updates of any kind during Limited Support; going by that policy, the year between 11.80.x's End of Full Support and its End of Version Support on 31 March 2027 is its Limited Support period.

Once NetApp's hardware EOS date arrives, case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement all stop being available for the array, according to NetApp's KB. NetApp describes its End of Availability Policy as applicable to all NetApp hardware, but the two-year and three-year release periods in that KB are stated for ONTAP hardware only, so they should not be read across to the E2800. NetApp third-party maintenance explains how independent cover fits alongside, or after, NetApp's own.

  • NetApp's software version-support definitions name SANtricity as operating-system software. Limited Support provides no 'Service Updates (including any form of software update)'. Self-Service Support is the period 'where NetApp does not provide support'. (kb.netapp.com)
  • NetApp's General Software Version Support Policy applies to SANtricity OS software, among others. NetApp gives Full Support to the latest two Feature Versions (N and N-1). When N is available, N-2 moves to Limited Support for 12 months. After the End of Version Support date, documentation stays available for 36 months (Self-Service Support), then the version is Obsolete. (mysupport.netapp.com)
  • NetApp's End of Availability Policy is 'applicable to all NetApp hardware', its durations 'may slightly vary by product family', and EOS is 'typically 5 years after the EOA date'. The KB states the 2-year/3-year release periods for ONTAP hardware only. (kb.netapp.com)
  • NetApp: 'EOS systems will not be eligible for:' case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement. (kb.netapp.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the NetApp E-Series E2800

An E2800 contract has to be scoped to the shelf format and the drives behind it. NetApp gives E2800 shelf form factors of 2U12, 2U24 and 4U60, and its shelf table lists DE212C (2U12), DE224C (2U24) and DE460C (4U60) expansion shelves for E2800 controllers. Maximum drive counts are 180 for 3.5in NL-SAS, 120 for 2.5in SAS SSD and 180 for 2.5in SAS HDD, so the schedule should list drives by type and size. Power and cooling differ by shelf: the 12- and 24-drive shelves use power-fan canisters, while the 60-drive shelf has separate power canisters and fan canisters.

Each E2800 controller canister has baseboard host ports, takes an optional host interface card (HIC), and 'includes a battery that preserves cached data if the AC power fails', so HICs and cache batteries belong on the parts list with the canisters. Host interfaces span 12Gb SAS, 10Gb or 25Gb iSCSI and 16Gb or 32Gb Fibre Channel, so record which host ports and HIC are in use. Management is embedded, through SANtricity OS and SANtricity System Manager. Third-party cover for SAN arrays like this one is outlined under storage and SAN maintenance.

Extend or refresh the NetApp E-Series E2800?

With NetApp support still in place and a tracker horizon of 2030, an E2800 is a reasonable candidate to keep running, under NetApp cover while that lasts or under third-party maintenance, which generally provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers. On the software side, 11.80.x reaches End of Version Support on 31 March 2027 while the 11.90.x line has no dates yet, so the SANtricity version in use needs tracking. The maintenance coverage builder takes quote requests for an E2800 and its shelves.

Refresh becomes the stronger case when an estate needs new systems, since NetApp no longer sells the E2800, or when plans depend on SANtricity releases beyond those that list it. The next model in the same line, by product-line order, is the E4000. NetApp's shelf table lists DE212C and DE460C shelves for both E2800 and E4000 controllers, but does not list the DE224C (2U24) for the E4000, so 24-bay shelves need checking before any move.

  • NetApp labels its E2800 maintenance content 'provided for reference only' because the model is EOA. It remains supported, but no new E2800 systems can be bought from NetApp. (docs.netapp.com)
  • Refresh compatibility: NetApp's shelf table lists DE212C and DE460C shelves for both E2800 and E4000 controllers, but DE224C (2U24) only for EF50, EF80, E2800, EF280, E5700 and EF570, not the E4000. Check this before reusing 24-bay shelves on an E4000. (docs.netapp.com)
  • SANtricity OS 11.80.x, a line that covers the E2800, passed End of Full Support on 31-Mar-2026 and reaches End of Version Support on 31-Mar-2027. The 11.90.x line, which also lists the E2800, has no dates yet ('TBD'). (mysupport.netapp.com)
  • Under NetApp's hardware EOA policy, EOS is 'typically 5 years after the EOA date'. Park Place's 2030 EOS is consistent with its 2025 End of Life date, but NetApp's own E2800 dates are unconfirmed. (kb.netapp.com)

The E2800's software dates come from NetApp's SANtricity OS rows. In NetApp's version table the E2800/EF280 shares those rows with the EF600, EF300 and E5700/EF570, and the 11.90.x row adds the E4000. By product-line order the E2700 (E2712, E2724 and E2760) came before the E2800 and the E4000 came after it; neither placement is stated by NetApp. Other arrays in the same estate can be looked up in the storage end-of-life checker.

A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the NetApp E-Series E2800

Is the NetApp E2800 end of life?

It is end of availability, not end of support. NetApp says the E2800 storage systems 'are no longer available for purchase, but still supported.' The only hardware end date available publicly is a third-party one: Park Place Technologies gives 30 September 2030 as end of service life for the E2812, E2824 and E2860.

When does NetApp support for the E2800 end?

NetApp's own EOS date was not publicly readable on 8 October 2026, because Hardware Universe and the EOA Platforms page need a sign-in. Park Place Technologies, a third-party tracker, gives 30 September 2030. NetApp's EOA policy puts EOS typically five years after EOA, with durations that 'may slightly vary by product family'.

Which SANtricity OS versions cover the E2800?

NetApp's Software Version Support table lists the E2800/EF280 under SANtricity OS 11.80.x and 11.90.x. The 11.80.x line passed End of Full Support on 31 March 2026 and reaches End of Version Support on 31 March 2027; 11.90.x has both dates marked 'TBD'.

Can I reuse E2800 drive shelves with an E4000?

Partly. NetApp's shelf table lists DE212C and DE460C shelves for both E2800 and E4000 controllers, but the DE224C 2U24 shelf is not listed for the E4000. Check that table before planning to move 24-bay shelves.

What should a maintenance quote for an E2800 cover?

Third-party maintenance can run alongside or after NetApp support and generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers. For an E2800 the scope should list the controller shelf format, any DE212C, DE224C or DE460C expansion shelves, the HICs and the drive mix, and a quote can be requested on that basis.
