Where the FAS8200 stands today
Because NetApp's dates are login-gated, the FAS8200's status here rests on tracker data. Park Place shows 'November 30, 2026' with no separate end-of-availability or end-of-life entry. eosl.date places the 'FAS 8200' in its 'Nearing End of Life — Support Ending Soon' list, with the same end of support and a release date of 'Not Announced'. They are separate trackers that agree with each other, but neither is a NetApp publication, so confirm NetApp's own record before planning around 30 November.
NetApp's KB names Hardware Universe (hwu.netapp.com) and the Product Communiqué EOA notices as the places to check platform EOA and EOS dates, and both require a NetApp Support Site login. Contract and warranty sit against the serial number: sign in, open SYSTEMS > Contracts and Warranties and enter it. If your contract end falls on or near the trackers' date, that leaves little time to arrange renewal, a third-party contract or an upgrade.
NetApp shows platform EOA/EOS dates only to signed-in users. NetApp KB 'How to check End of Support and End of Availability for NetApp products' (https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/How_to_check_End_of_Support_and_End_of_Availability_for_NetApp_products) says they can be viewed in Hardware Universe (https://hwu.netapp.com) or in the NetApp Support Site Product Communiqué EOA notices (https://mysupport.netapp.com/info/eoa/index.html). Both need a NetApp Support Site login. Your own unit's support contract and warranty go by serial number. Per NetApp KB 'How to check Service Contract and Warranty information on NetApp Support Site' (https://kb.netapp.com/nss/Support_Site/How_to_check_Service_Contract_and_Warranty_information_on_NetApp_Support_Site), log in to the NetApp Support Site, open SYSTEMS > Contracts and Warranties, and search by the system's serial number.
What still works after NetApp support ends
Until NetApp's own EOS date, renewal remains the OEM route; NetApp's KB says the exact price comes from a NetApp sales representative or authorised partner, and there is no public price list. After EOS, NetApp's KB says a system is no longer eligible to submit cases or to receive technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications or replacement parts from NetApp. For systems already at EOS, the KB points owners to NetApp Sales about 'EOS PVR's if applicable' (Product Variance Requests, in NetApp's Digital Advisor terminology), with no terms, scope or price given.
Service Processor firmware on the FAS8200 travels with ONTAP. NetApp's KB covering the AFF A300 and FAS8200 describes an 'ONTAP upgrade bundled with newer SP firmware' followed by an automatic Service Processor upgrade, so on these platforms SP updates arrive with ONTAP upgrades. Access to those upgrades depends on entitlement, as NetApp lets customers download only software their company purchased, and once an ONTAP version is out of limited support NetApp has no software available for it. Each release gets three years of full support with P-releases and vulnerability alerts, two of limited support without them, and three of self-service documentation.

Limited support, years 4-5: technical support, root-cause analysis and downloads only. Self-service, years 6-8: online documentation only. (docs.netapp.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- NetApp support contract renewal (until NetApp's EOS date) — NetApp's KB says to contact a NetApp sales representative or authorised partner for the exact renewal price. No public price list. (kb.netapp.com)
- EOS PVR via NetApp Sales ('if applicable') — For systems already at EOS, NetApp's KB says to contact Sales about 'EOS PVR's if applicable'. The KB gives no terms, scope or price. A separate NetApp Digital Advisor KB expands PVR as 'Product Variance Request' (https://kb.netapp.com/data-mgmt/Digital-Advisor-KBs/How_to_handle_AIQDA_risks_after_a_PVR_FEPVR_approval). What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the FAS8200
The FAS8200 occupies 3U per chassis, and its field-replaceable units are boot media, caching module, chassis, controller, DIMMs, drives, NVMEM battery, PCIe cards, power supplies and the real-time clock battery. The caching module raises a data-handling point for any contract that swaps parts: NetApp notes that data on the module is encrypted but still provides a secure-erase command, 'system controller flash-cache secure-erase run', that you may want to run before replacement, so agree in advance who runs it.
Per controller, document e0a/e0b for the cluster interconnect, e0c/e0d as 10GBASE-T, e0e|0e through e0h|0h to the 10GbE data switches, and the wrench management port; the management controller is a Service Processor. Disk shelves are DS212C or DS224C on multi-path HA SAS cabling. PSUs are redundant and hot-swappable and are swapped one at a time, ideally within two minutes of removal per NetApp's best practice, during which the system keeps running but reports a degraded PSU. Hardware break-fix support sets out how parts-and-engineer cover of this kind is usually structured.

Extend or refresh the FAS8200?
Third-party maintenance after the trackers' 30 November date is a reasonable bridge when the FAS8200 runs a stable workload on an ONTAP release you are content to keep and SP firmware is handled with care. NetApp documents that where the SP is older than version 5.9, the automatic SP upgrade after an ONTAP upgrade can fail and leave it on the previous version, so check the SP level before any ONTAP change. If the system might return to NetApp, note that NetApp's entitlement KB says it may decline support, even under a valid entitlement, for a system serviced without prior agreement by anyone other than NetApp or an authorised NetApp service representative. For the independent route, see an alternative to NetApp SupportEdge.
Refresh becomes the stronger case when the ONTAP release you depend on leaves full support, ending P-releases and vulnerability alerts, or when NetApp support is required beyond its EOS date. Using 'system controller replace' on ONTAP 9.8 or later, the FAS8200 can move to the FAS8300, FAS8700, FAS9000 or FAS9500, and NetApp also lists the FAS8300, FAS8700 and FAS9000 as targets on ONTAP 9.5 to 9.7. Newer paths reach the FAS70 and FAS90 from ONTAP 9.15.1P3 and the FAS50 from ONTAP 9.16.1P2. Of these, the FAS8300 is the next model in the same line.
- Documented controller-upgrade paths from the FAS8200: to FAS8300, FAS8700, FAS9000 or FAS9500 using 'system controller replace' on ONTAP 9.8 or later (and FAS8300/FAS8700/FAS9000 on ONTAP 9.5 to 9.7); to FAS70/FAS90 from ONTAP 9.15.1P3; and to FAS50 from ONTAP 9.16.1P2. (docs.netapp.com)
- The SP is upgraded automatically after ONTAP upgrades that bundle newer SP firmware. NetApp documents that on systems with SP versions earlier than 5.9, this automatic SP upgrade can fail and leave the SP on its previous version. Check the SP level when planning ONTAP updates. (kb.netapp.com)
- Data on the controller's caching module is encrypted. NetApp still gives a secure-erase command ('system controller flash-cache secure-erase run') you may want to run before replacing the module. (docs.netapp.com)
- NetApp may decline support even with a valid entitlement if services were performed by a person or entity other than NetApp or an authorised NetApp service representative without a prior agreement with NetApp. (kb.netapp.com)
Keep your FAS8200 covered
Tell us how many you run and when your current cover ends, and we will come back with a like-for-like maintenance quote for that estate. Your model and its support status are attached to the enquiry automatically, so there is nothing to re-type.
Related models
In NetApp's FAS8000 lineage the FAS8200 follows the FAS8020, FAS8040, FAS8060 and FAS8080, all listed in NetApp's aggregate-relocation upgrade matrix as old controllers that can move up to it. NetApp's SP auto-upgrade KB covers the FAS8200 together with the AFF A300, so the same SP checks apply to both, and the AFF A300 end of life page sets out that system's own dates. Owners of the FAS2700 series will find that position on the FAS2720 / FAS2750 end of life page.

Questions people ask about the FAS8200
Is the NetApp FAS8200 end of life?
Not yet on tracker data, but close: Park Place Technologies lists 30 November 2026 as the FAS8200's end of service life, eosl.date gives the same date as its end of support, and eosl.date shows the model as 'Nearing End of Life'. That date is 53 days after 8 October 2026 and comes from trackers rather than NetApp, whose own EOS date requires a NetApp Support Site login.
Can I renew NetApp support on a FAS8200?
Renewal is available up to NetApp's own EOS date, and NetApp's KB says the exact price comes from a NetApp sales representative or authorised partner. After EOS, NetApp treats systems as ineligible for case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications or parts replacement, and points owners to Sales about 'EOS PVR's if applicable'.
How is Service Processor firmware updated on a FAS8200?
It arrives with ONTAP: NetApp describes an ONTAP upgrade bundled with newer SP firmware, followed by an automatic SP upgrade. On systems running SP versions earlier than 5.9, that automatic step can fail and leave the SP on its previous version, so check the SP level before upgrading ONTAP.
What can a FAS8200 be upgraded to?
NetApp documents controller upgrades from the FAS8200 to the FAS8300, FAS8700, FAS9000 or FAS9500 using 'system controller replace' on ONTAP 9.8 or later, to the FAS70 or FAS90 from ONTAP 9.15.1P3, and to the FAS50 from ONTAP 9.16.1P2. The FAS8300 is the next model in the same line.
Is third-party maintenance an option for a FAS8200?
Cover from an independent maintainer generally means fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and it can run past a vendor's end of support. You can request a quote for the controllers, caching modules and DS212C or DS224C shelves through the maintenance coverage builder.
