NetApp FAS8000 Series (FAS8020 / FAS8040 / FAS8060 / FAS8080EX) support dates
| Milestone | Date | Basis | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| End of Service Life, hardware (FAS 8020, FAS 8040, FAS 8060, FAS 8060 EX, FAS8080 EX, FAS8080 2-CTRL), from the Park Place Technologies EOSL library | 31 January 2023 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not NetApp. The per-model pages (/eosl/netapp/fas-8020/, /fas-8040/, /fas-8060/, /fas8080ex/, /fas8080c/) each say 'End of Service Life January 31, 2023'. Park Place and Service Express count as one source. Park Place lists the AFF8000 all-flash siblings with different, earlier dates; those do not apply to the FAS models. | Park Place Technologies: NetApp End Of Life List |
| End of Support, hardware (FAS 8020, FAS 8040, FAS 8060, FAS 8060 EX), from the eosl.date tracker | 31 January 2023 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker. 'Not Announced' sits in its Release Date column. The table has no EOL column and no FAS8080 row. | eosl.date: NetApp FAS End of Life (EOL) Dates and EOSL Dates |
| ONTAP software support discontinued from ONTAP 9.9.1 (FAS8020, FAS8040, FAS8060, FAS8080; also AFF8020/8040/8060/8080) | — | Vendor-published | NetApp docs: ONTAP hardware systems no longer supported (page dated 08/04/2026) |
| Highest supported ONTAP release: ONTAP 9.8 (FAS8080, stated by NetApp) | — | Vendor-publishedNetApp's text: 'upgrade your FAS8080 to ONTAP 9.8 (which is the highest ONTAP version it supports)'. For the FAS8020/8040/8060, 9.8 as the last line is inferred from 'discontinued from ONTAP 9.9.1'. | NetApp docs: ONTAP version compatibility for mixed version clusters (page dated 08/14/2026) |
| ONTAP 9.8: End of Full Support | 31 December 2023 | Vendor-publishedThis is NetApp's date for the ONTAP 9.8 release, not a hardware date. | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| ONTAP 9.8: End of Limited Support | 31 December 2025 | Vendor-published | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| ONTAP 9.8: End of Self-Service Support | 31 December 2028 | Vendor-published | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| Data ONTAP 8.2 (7G & 7-Mode): End of Self-Service Support (extended because of the FAS/AFF8000 and FAS2500 EOA) | 31 December 2025 | Vendor-publishedEnd of Full Support was 31-Dec-2020 and End of Limited Support 31-Dec-2022. NetApp's footnote ties the extension to CPC-1409-03 and to the FAS/AFF8000 and FAS2500 EOA communique CPC-1706-04. | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
Where the NetApp FAS8000 Series (FAS8020 / FAS8040 / FAS8060 / FAS8080EX) stands today
A second tracker, eosl.date, gives the same 31 January 2023 for the 8020, 8040, 8060 and 8060 EX. Its table has no FAS8080 row, so for the FAS8080 EX and 2-CTRL the date rests on Park Place alone, whose data is not counted separately from Service Express's. One trap for asset registers: Park Place lists the all-flash AFF8000 siblings with different, earlier dates. Those do not apply to the FAS models and should not be copied onto FAS8000 records.
On ONTAP, the FAS8080's 9.8 ceiling is NetApp's own wording, while for the FAS8020, FAS8040 and FAS8060 it is inferred from NetApp listing them as discontinued from ONTAP 9.9.1. The 9.8 dates belong to the software release, not the hardware: End of Full Support on 31 December 2023, End of Limited Support on 31 December 2025, and End of Self-Service Support due on 31 December 2028. For hardware, NetApp sets EOA and EOS per platform or component, not through a per-serial lookup, and directs owners to Hardware Universe or the Product Communique on its Support Site; Hardware Universe and the Support Site's EOA Platforms page both redirected to a sign-in on 8 October 2026. NetApp's route for one system's contract or warranty is a non-technical case.
NetApp publishes EOA and EOS dates per platform or component, not through a per-serial lookup. Its EOA policy KB (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/Why_does_the_latest_software_release_not_support_my_hardware_or_platform) says 'EOA and EOS dates ... can be found in Hardware Universe'. The public summary of NetApp's KB (https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/How_to_check_End_of_Support_and_End_of_Availability_for_NetApp_products) says they 'can be viewed from either Hardware Universe or NetApp Support Site: Product Communique'. On 8 Oct 2026, Hardware Universe (https://hwu.netapp.com) and the EOA Platforms page (https://mysupport.netapp.com/info/eoa/df_eoa_category_page.html?category=Platforms) both redirected to a NetApp sign-in. NetApp's KB names the FAS/AFF8000 communique as CPC-1706-04. For a specific system's contract or warranty, the public part of NetApp's KB (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/How_to_find_contract_details_such_as_warranties) says to 'open a non-technical case'. The rest needs a sign-in.
What still works after NetApp support ends
Past EOS, NetApp's KB rules out four things: case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement. Once the support entitlement has expired, AutoSupport messages no longer generate cases; NetApp says case creation resumes automatically within 24 hours of a renewal. For systems already beyond EOS, the KB's pointer is to ask NetApp's sales team about 'EOS PVR's if applicable', and NetApp publishes no terms or eligibility for that.
NetApp's End of Availability Policy, which it calls 'applicable to all NetApp hardware', sets the ONTAP hardware timeline: two years after EOA in which new Feature Releases support the platform, then Service Updates, which NetApp says 'include security fixes', for releases that already support it until EOS, 'typically 5 years after the EOA date'. On the trackers' date a FAS8000 is past EOS, and 9.8 is past Limited Support too: NetApp's definitions provide no Service Updates of any form in Limited Support, and Self-Service Support leaves documentation only. For controllers still on Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode, the extension NetApp granted because of the FAS/AFF8000 and FAS2500 end of availability has also run out: its last stage, Self-Service Support, ended on 31 December 2025.
- NetApp's End of Availability Policy ('applicable to all NetApp hardware'): for ONTAP hardware, new Feature Releases support a platform for 2 years after EOA. Service Updates (P-releases, 'which include security fixes') then continue for Feature Releases that already support it until the EOS date, 'typically 5 years after the EOA date'. (kb.netapp.com)
- Under NetApp's version-support definitions, Limited Support provides no 'Service Updates (including any form of software update)'. Self-Service Support is the period 'where NetApp does not provide support', with only documentation left. ONTAP 9.8, the platform's highest release, has been past Limited Support since 31-Dec-2025. (kb.netapp.com)
- NetApp: 'EOS systems will not be eligible for:' case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement. (kb.netapp.com)
- AutoSupport messages 'WILL NOT generate cases' once support entitlement has expired. 'Once renewed, case creation will automatically resume within 24 hours.' (kb.netapp.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- EOS PVR via NetApp sales ('if applicable') — NetApp KB wording for systems already at EOS: 'Contact Sales team regarding implementation of EOS PVR's if applicable.' No terms or eligibility are published. (kb.netapp.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the NetApp FAS8000 Series (FAS8020 / FAS8040 / FAS8060 / FAS8080EX)
The FAS8000's management and I/O hardware carry two maintenance details worth writing into a contract. Every controller in the series is managed through a Service Processor, and NetApp flags, as an Active IQ wellness risk, that on the FAS8020, 8040, 8060 and 8080 the SP's internal Ethernet switch may need a manual firmware update after an SP firmware update. Anyone replacing or reflashing one of those controllers should check that switch firmware as part of the job.
On the FAS8080, NetApp's KB describes an IO Expansion Module (IOXM) that contains a PLX PCIe 8732 switch and has its own IOXM fans, so the module and its fans belong on the parts schedule for that model. An accurate inventory is the starting point for a contract: controllers by model, any drive shelves attached, and whether each system runs ONTAP 9 or Data ONTAP 8.2.x 7-Mode, both of which NetApp's KB lists for the FAS80x0.
| Specification | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Management controller | Service Processor (SP). On the FAS8020/8040/8060/8080 (and AFF8020/8040/8060/8080), the SP's internal Ethernet switch may need a manual firmware update after an SP firmware update (Active IQ wellness risk). | kb.netapp.com |

Extend or refresh the NetApp FAS8000 Series (FAS8020 / FAS8040 / FAS8060 / FAS8080EX)?
Extending a FAS8000 on third-party maintenance can make sense where the cluster is already on ONTAP 9.8, the workload is stable and the main risk is hardware: a failed controller part, fan or IOXM rather than a software defect. An alternative to NetApp SupportEdge explains what third-party cover generally provides, namely diagnosis, parts and engineers past the vendor's end of support, and a quote can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.
Refresh is the stronger option where the array needs current security fixes: 9.8 entered Limited Support when its Full Support ended on 31 December 2023, and NetApp's definitions provide no Service Updates in that stage or after it. NetApp's own example sets out a migration sequence for the FAS8080: if it is on ONTAP 9.5 and a new platform running ONTAP 9.12.1 is joining the cluster, first upgrade the FAS8080 to 9.8, then add the new nodes and migrate data, with the cluster in a mixed-version state while the move runs. The next models in the same line are the FAS8200, following the 8020, 8040 and 8060, and the FAS9000, following the FAS8080 EX; FAS8200 end of life covers that system's own position.
- Refresh planning: NetApp's own example says that if a FAS8080 is on ONTAP 9.5 and you are adding a new platform running ONTAP 9.12.1, you should first upgrade the FAS8080 to ONTAP 9.8 ('the highest ONTAP version it supports'), then add the new nodes and migrate data. The cluster is in a mixed-version state during the migration. (docs.netapp.com)
- ONTAP 9.8 reached End of Full Support on 31-Dec-2023 and End of Limited Support on 31-Dec-2025. Its End of Self-Service Support is 31-Dec-2028. (kb.netapp.com)
- Maintenance note: NetApp flags that the FAS80x0 SP's internal Ethernet switch firmware may need manual intervention after an SP firmware update. Check it when replacing or reflashing controllers. (kb.netapp.com)
- NetApp says EOS systems are not eligible for case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications or parts replacement. (kb.netapp.com)

Related models
The FAS8000 is the hybrid half of a pair: the AFF8020, AFF8040, AFF8060 and AFF8080 are its all-flash siblings and appear on the same ONTAP 9.9.1 discontinuation list, though Park Place dates the AFF models differently. NetApp's 7-Mode extension footnote ties the FAS/AFF8000 and the FAS2500 to the same end-of-availability communique, CPC-1706-04; see NetApp FAS2500 series end of life for that system. The FAS3200 and FAS6200 series preceded the FAS8000 by product-line order, an inference rather than a NetApp statement.

Questions people ask about the NetApp FAS8000 Series (FAS8020 / FAS8040 / FAS8060 / FAS8080EX)
Is the NetApp FAS8040 end of life?
On third-party data, yes. Park Place Technologies and eosl.date both date the end of NetApp hardware support for the FAS8040 to 31 January 2023, the same as for the FAS8020 and FAS8060. The dated NetApp notice, CPC-1706-04, redirects to a NetApp Support Site sign-in.
What is the highest ONTAP version the FAS8080 supports?
NetApp states that ONTAP 9.8 'is the highest ONTAP version' the FAS8080 supports. The FAS8020, FAS8040 and FAS8060 are listed as discontinued from ONTAP 9.9.1, so 9.8 is their last line by inference. ONTAP 9.8 reached End of Limited Support on 31 December 2025.
Does Park Place's AFF8000 date apply to my FAS8060?
No. Park Place lists the AFF8000 all-flash models with different, earlier dates, and those do not apply to the FAS8000 controllers. For the FAS8060 and FAS8060 EX, Park Place and eosl.date both give 31 January 2023.
What came after the FAS8000?
The next models in the same line are the FAS8200, following the FAS8020, FAS8040 and FAS8060, and the FAS9000, following the FAS8080 EX. That sequence is an inference, not a NetApp statement.
Can a FAS8000 be kept running on third-party maintenance?
Third-party maintenance is built for hardware past the vendor's end of support, and its usual scope is fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers. A quote request for a FAS8000 should list the controller models, any FAS8080 IOXMs and any attached shelves. A hardware contract leaves ONTAP 9.8's release dates and NetApp's EOS rules unchanged.
