NetApp FAS2500 Series (FAS2520 / FAS2552 / FAS2554) support dates
| Milestone | Date | Basis | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| End of Service Life, hardware (FAS2520, FAS 2552, FAS 2554), from the Park Place Technologies EOSL library | 31 January 2023 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not NetApp. Park Place's per-model pages (/eosl/netapp/fas2520/, /fas-2552/, /fas-2554/) each say 'End of Service Life January 31, 2023'. Park Place and Service Express have merged, so they count as one source. NetApp's own date is in CPC-1706-04, which needs a sign-in. | Park Place Technologies: NetApp End Of Life List |
| End of Support, hardware (FAS2520, FAS 2552, FAS 2554), from the eosl.date tracker | 31 January 2023 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not NetApp. Its table columns are Product / Model Number / Product Line / Release Date / End of Support. 'Not Announced' sits in the Release Date column. The table has no EOL or EOA column. | eosl.date: NetApp FAS End of Life (EOL) Dates and EOSL Dates |
| ONTAP software support discontinued from ONTAP 9.9.1 (FAS2520, FAS2552, FAS2554) | — | Vendor-publishedIn NetApp's release sequence the line before 9.9.1 is 9.8, so 9.8 is the last ONTAP line these systems can run. That is an inference from this page, not a NetApp statement for the FAS2500. | NetApp docs: ONTAP hardware systems no longer supported (page dated 08/04/2026) |
| ONTAP 9.8 (last release line for this platform, inferred): End of Full Support | 31 December 2023 | Vendor-publishedThis is NetApp's date for the ONTAP 9.8 release, not a hardware date. | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| ONTAP 9.8: End of Limited Support | 31 December 2025 | Vendor-published | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| ONTAP 9.8: End of Self-Service Support | 31 December 2028 | Vendor-published | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
| Data ONTAP 8.2 (7G & 7-Mode): End of Self-Service Support (extended because of the FAS/AFF8000 and FAS2500 EOA) | 31 December 2025 | Vendor-publishedThe same KB gives End of Full Support as 31-Dec-2020 and End of Limited Support as 31-Dec-2022, all marked *. NetApp's footnote: 'In CPC-1409-03, NetApp announced updates, bug fixes, and patches will be provided for storage systems operating Data ONTAP 7-Mode for three (3) years after the End of Availability (EOA) of FAS/AFF8000 and FAS2500 storage systems (CPC-1706-04). The dates shown reflect the extension.' | NetApp KB: What are the ONTAP Software Version Support dates |
Where the NetApp FAS2500 Series (FAS2520 / FAS2552 / FAS2554) stands today
Park Place's per-model pages for the FAS2520, FAS 2552 and FAS 2554 each read 'End of Service Life January 31, 2023', and eosl.date carries the same date in its End of Support column. Park Place and Service Express have merged and count as one source. NetApp's KB confirms only that CPC-1706-04 is the FAS2500 End of Availability communique; the communique itself, the Support Site EOA Platforms page and Hardware Universe all redirected to a sign-in when checked on 8 October 2026.
Since 9.8 precedes 9.9.1 in NetApp's release sequence, the 9.8 line is the last a FAS2500 can run, an inference from NetApp's discontinuation list rather than a statement NetApp makes about the FAS2500. ONTAP 9.8 left Full Support on 31 December 2023 and Limited Support on 31 December 2025, and its End of Self-Service Support falls on 31 December 2028; all three are software-release dates, not hardware dates. NetApp publishes hardware EOA and EOS dates per platform or component, not through a per-serial lookup. Its KBs point to Hardware Universe or the Product Communique on the NetApp Support Site, which need a Support Site account, and, for a single system's contract or warranty, to a non-technical case.
NetApp publishes EOA and EOS dates per platform or component, not through a per-serial lookup. Its EOA policy KB (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/Why_does_the_latest_software_release_not_support_my_hardware_or_platform) says 'EOA and EOS dates ... can be found in Hardware Universe'. The public summary of the KB 'How to check End of Support and End of Availability for NetApp products' (https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/How_to_check_End_of_Support_and_End_of_Availability_for_NetApp_products) says they 'can be viewed from either Hardware Universe or NetApp Support Site: Product Communique'. On 8 Oct 2026, Hardware Universe (https://hwu.netapp.com) and the Support Site EOA Platforms page (https://mysupport.netapp.com/info/eoa/df_eoa_category_page.html?category=Platforms) both redirected to a NetApp sign-in, so you need a NetApp Support Site account. NetApp's KB names the FAS2500 communique as CPC-1706-04. For a specific system's contract or warranty, the public part of NetApp's KB 'How to find contract details such as warranties?' (https://kb.netapp.com/cs/lcm/How_to_find_contract_details_such_as_warranties) says: 'To receive assistance with non-technical issues, please open a non-technical case'. The rest of that KB needs a sign-in.
What still works after NetApp support ends
NetApp's KB is specific about what an EOS system loses: eligibility for case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement. A separate KB, which applies to ONTAP 9, warns that AutoSupport messages 'WILL NOT generate cases' if the system's support entitlement has expired. Where a system is already at EOS, the KB's advice is: 'Contact Sales team regarding implementation of EOS PVR's if applicable.' NetApp publishes no terms, pricing or eligibility for this, so treat it as a case-by-case request, not a product.
NetApp's End of Availability Policy, which it calls 'applicable to all NetApp hardware' with durations that 'may slightly vary by product family', gives an ONTAP platform two years after EOA in which new Feature Releases support it, then three further years of Service Updates for Feature Releases that already support it, ending at EOS, 'typically 5 years after the EOA date'. Under NetApp's version-support definitions, Limited Support provides no Service Updates of any kind, and Self-Service Support is 'The time period where NetApp does not provide support', with only documentation left. Limited Support for ONTAP 9.8 ended on 31 December 2025, so the release is now in Self-Service Support. Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode is further behind: NetApp extended its dates because of the FAS2500 and FAS/AFF8000 end of availability, and even the last of them, End of Self-Service Support, passed on 31 December 2025.
- NetApp's End of Availability Policy is 'applicable to all NetApp hardware', and its durations 'may slightly vary by product family'. For ONTAP hardware, the Feature Release Period runs 2 years after EOA, during which new Feature Releases support the platform. The Patch/Fix Release Period then runs 3 more years, with Service Updates only for Feature Releases that already support the platform. It 'ends at the End of Support (EOS) date, typically 5 years after the EOA date.' NetApp's AFF A700s example says customers 'can continue to receive Service Updates (P) releases (which include security fixes) up to the A700s EOS date.' (kb.netapp.com)
- NetApp's software version support levels: Full Support includes Service Updates and security vulnerability evaluation. Under Limited Support, 'Service Updates (including any form of software update) are not provided.' Self-Service Support is 'The time period where NetApp does not provide support', with only documentation left. Then the version is Obsolete. ONTAP 9.8, this platform's last release line, has been past Limited Support since 31-Dec-2025. (kb.netapp.com)
- NetApp: 'EOS systems will not be eligible for:' case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications and parts replacement. (kb.netapp.com)
- AutoSupport messages 'WILL NOT generate cases if your system's support entitlement has expired.' 'Once renewed, case creation will automatically resume within 24 hours.' The KB applies to ONTAP 9. (kb.netapp.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- EOS PVR via NetApp sales ('if applicable') — NetApp KB wording for systems already at EOS: 'Contact Sales team regarding implementation of EOS PVR's if applicable.' NetApp publishes no terms, pricing or eligibility for this. Treat it as a case-by-case request, not a product. (kb.netapp.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the NetApp FAS2500 Series (FAS2520 / FAS2552 / FAS2554)
A FAS2500 contract should start from an inventory of what is installed, beginning with the controller layout: NetApp's KB says a FAS2552 or FAS2554 can run as a single node or as an HA pair in an active/active configuration, and the schedule should say which. The management controller is a Service Processor (status is read with 'sp status -d'), which belongs on the asset list too.
Host ports need recording model by model. NetApp describes the FAS2552 and FAS2554 host ports as Converged Network Adapter (CNA) ports, 'also known as Unified Target Adapter (UTA2) ports'. For GbE connectivity on those ports, NetApp's procedure relies on Data ONTAP 8.2.4 or 8.3.1 and later, which include the firmware, followed by an update to the CNA/UTA2 flash image and an X6567-R6 (SFP optical 1GB shortwave) or X6568-R6 (SFP copper 1GB RJ-45) module; NetApp states that 'This operation does not apply to FAS2520 systems.' Record the SFP part numbers and whether each system runs Data ONTAP 8.2.x 7-Mode or ONTAP 9, both of which NetApp's KB lists for the FAS25xx. For the wider picture of independent cover on disk arrays, see storage and SAN maintenance.

Data ONTAP 8.2.4 or 8.3.1 and later include firmware for GbE connectivity. After upgrading, you update the CNA/UTA2 flash image and fit an X6567-R6 (SFP optical 1GB shortwave) or X6568-R6 (SFP copper 1GB RJ-45) module. Extend or refresh the NetApp FAS2500 Series (FAS2520 / FAS2552 / FAS2554)?
Keeping a FAS2500 running on third-party maintenance can be reasonable when the array serves a stable workload on ONTAP 9.8 and the need is hardware fault diagnosis and parts. That is the core of what third-party maintenance covers: engineers, parts and diagnosis for hardware past the vendor's end of support. It does nothing for the software position: NetApp's definitions provide no Service Updates once a release has left Full Support, and 9.8 did so on 31 December 2023.
The case for refresh is strongest where the array holds data that needs current security fixes, or where it still runs Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode, which is past every NetApp support stage. Because NetApp lists the FAS2500 as unsupported from ONTAP 9.9.1, the hardware cannot move beyond the 9.8 line. The next model in the same line is the FAS2600 series, the FAS2620 and FAS2650, and FAS2650 end of life sets out that system's own status. A quote for keeping the FAS2500 covered while a migration is planned can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.
- Software ceiling: NetApp lists the FAS2520, FAS2552 and FAS2554 as no longer supported from ONTAP 9.9.1, so they cannot move beyond the ONTAP 9.8 line. (docs.netapp.com)
- ONTAP 9.8 reached End of Full Support on 31-Dec-2023 and End of Limited Support on 31-Dec-2025. Its End of Self-Service Support is 31-Dec-2028. (kb.netapp.com)
- Systems still on Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode are past every NetApp support stage. The 7-Mode dates, extended because of the FAS2500 and FAS/AFF8000 EOA (CPC-1409-03 / CPC-1706-04), were End of Full Support 31-Dec-2020, End of Limited Support 31-Dec-2022 and End of Self-Service Support 31-Dec-2025. (kb.netapp.com)
- NetApp says EOS systems are not eligible for case submittal, technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications or parts replacement. For systems already at EOS it says: 'Contact Sales team regarding implementation of EOS PVR's if applicable.' (kb.netapp.com)
- Without an active entitlement, AutoSupport messages no longer open NetApp cases automatically. (kb.netapp.com)

Related models
The FAS2500 shares its end-of-availability paperwork with the FAS8000 series: NetApp's 7-Mode footnote cites CPC-1706-04 for the end of availability of both the FAS/AFF8000 and the FAS2500, and NetApp FAS8000 series end of life covers the FAS8000 systems. Within the entry-level FAS line, the FAS2200 series (FAS2220 and FAS2240) came before the FAS2500 and the FAS2600 series came after it; both placements are inferred from product-line order rather than stated by NetApp.

Questions people ask about the NetApp FAS2500 Series (FAS2520 / FAS2552 / FAS2554)
Is the NetApp FAS2500 end of life?
Third-party trackers say its hardware support has ended. Park Place Technologies and eosl.date both list 31 January 2023 as the end of NetApp hardware support for the FAS2520, FAS2552 and FAS2554. NetApp's own date is in communique CPC-1706-04, which needs a NetApp Support Site sign-in, and NetApp's public docs list all three models as unsupported from ONTAP 9.9.1.
What is the last ONTAP version for the FAS2520, FAS2552 and FAS2554?
NetApp lists the three models as no longer supported from ONTAP 9.9.1, which makes the 9.8 line the last they can run in NetApp's release order. That is an inference from NetApp's list rather than a FAS2500-specific statement. ONTAP 9.8 reached End of Limited Support on 31 December 2025, and its End of Self-Service Support is 31 December 2028.
Is Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode still supported on a FAS2500?
No. NetApp extended its Data ONTAP 8.2 7-Mode dates because of the FAS2500 and FAS/AFF8000 end of availability, but every extended date has now passed: End of Full Support on 31 December 2020, End of Limited Support on 31 December 2022 and End of Self-Service Support on 31 December 2025.
Can I still get NetApp support for a FAS2500?
Largely no. Under NetApp's KB an EOS system is not eligible to submit cases, and gets no technical support assistance, AutoSupport notifications or parts replacement. For systems already at EOS it says to contact NetApp sales about EOS PVRs 'if applicable'. NetApp publishes no terms, pricing or eligibility for that, so treat it as a case-by-case request rather than a product.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a FAS2500?
Third-party maintenance is designed for hardware in this position: it generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers after the vendor's support has ended. A quote can be requested for the specific FAS2520, FAS2552 or FAS2554 configuration. It covers the hardware only, so it does not change the ONTAP 9.8 ceiling or NetApp's release support dates.
