Dell R740 vs HPE DL380 Gen10
A specification-by-specification comparison of the Dell PowerEdge R740 and the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, built from Dell’s and HPE’s own documents. 1 headline measure favours the R740, 3 favour the DL380 Gen10, and 106 processors appear in both lists.
Bottom line. DL380 Gen10 leads on storage density, AI and acceleration, network throughput. Neither vendor publishes benchmarks for these machines, so every call here is made on what their documents state.
Each row is a figure both vendors publish. Bars show the split between the two; a badge marks the larger figure, which is not always the better buy — a shallower chassis or a lower power ceiling can matter more.

02 — Verdict
Which one, and why
Drawn from the measures above and each model’s own data sheet. Neither vendor publishes benchmark results for these servers, so nothing here claims one is “faster”.
Choose the R740 if…
Largest power supply: 2,600 W against 2,200 W on the DL380 Gen10
Keeping every drive at the front is the trade that buys room inside: Dell allows this model three double-width 300 W accelerators or six single-width 150 W ones, plus three double-width or four single-width FPGAs, with no drive-chassis condition attached. The R740xd’s equivalent row stops at two cards and ties them to its 24-bay build.
Choose the DL380 Gen10 if…
Drive bays: 24 against 16 on the R740
Accelerators: Up to 8 against Up to 6 on the R740
Fastest network option: 100 GbE class against 25 GbE class on the R740
Expansion is the whole argument for this chassis. Three riser positions carry as many as eight PCIe 3.0 slots, and the pair of x16/x16/x16 GPU riser kits each take three single-width accelerators — six across two processors. The 1U DL360 Gen10, built from the identical processor table, reaches three slots in total.

07 — Questions
R740 vs DL380 Gen10, answered
Is the R740 or the DL380 Gen10 the faster server?
Neither document publishes benchmark results, so this page compares what they do state. The R740 lists 111 processors up to 28 cores at 205 W; the DL380 Gen10 lists 113 up to 28 cores at 205 W. Fully populated that is 56 cores against 56.
Which holds more memory?
The R740 has 24 DIMM slots and a stated ceiling of 3 TB with RDIMM/LRDIMM. The DL380 Gen10 has 24 and 3.0 TB.
Which takes more drives?
R740: 16 bays across 3 documented layouts. DL380 Gen10: 24 across 15. Counts include rear and mid-chassis positions where the vendor documents them.
Can either take GPUs?
R740: up to 6 accelerators, 2 double-wide cards listed. DL380 Gen10: up to 8, 14 double-wide listed.
Do they share any processors?
Yes — 106 processors appear in both documents, including the Intel Xeon Platinum 8280L. That makes a like-for-like build possible on either server.
