Lenovo · ThinkSystem first generation (single-socket Intel Xeon E-2100 / E-2200)

Lenovo ThinkSystem SR250 end of life

The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR250 is withdrawn from marketing but has no posted End of Service date: the Lenovo Press change log recorded the withdrawal on 24 April 2023, and on 8 October 2026 Lenovo's End of Service lookup returned no date for machine type 7Y51 or 7Y52 in any of the four geos queried, nor for the India types 7Y72 and 7Y73 in EMEA or AP. That blank means no EOS has been posted, not that support has stopped. For this 1U single-socket server, the limits that apply today are each unit's own warranty or contract and Lenovo's operating-system certification, which for the E-2200 build stops at Windows Server 2022 and ESXi 8.0 U2.

ThinkSystem SR250 support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the ThinkSystem SR250 stands today

Lenovo Press records two dated withdrawal steps for the SR250. The 16 January 2021 update to the Xeon E-2100 guide (LP0963) recorded 'All EMEA models are now withdrawn', covering the region-specific preconfigured models listed in that guide; it was not the end of the product. The model-wide entry, 'The ThinkSystem SR250 is now withdrawn from marketing. The follow-on server is the ThinkSystem SR250 V2', is dated 24 April 2023 and appears in both the E-2100 guide and the E-2200 guide (LP1272). No Lenovo withdrawal letter giving an effective date was found, so the change-log date stands in for one.

Lenovo sets End of Service by geography, machine type and model, not serial number. In its End of Service Date Lookup, pick EMEA for a UK unit and enter the first four characters of the machine type/model on the label: 7Y51 (three-year warranty), 7Y52 (one-year warranty), or 7Y72/7Y73 for India builds, then the model code, such as CTO1WW. Lenovo says it posts EOS dates 'at least 90 days before the actual EOS date and in most cases longer', and the lookup still returns dates for machine types already past EOS (machine type 7914 model 23A shows 31 December 2020 for EMEA), so a blank SR250 result means no date has been posted rather than one that has expired. Warranty and contract end dates are a separate, serial-number check in Lenovo's warranty lookup.

Finding the date for your own unit

Lenovo sets End of Service by geography, machine type and model, not by serial number. Open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup (https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht504708) and choose geo EMEA for UK units. Enter the machine type: 7Y51 or 7Y52, or 7Y72/7Y73 for India builds. It is the first four characters of the machine type/model on the product label. Then enter the model code, for example CTO1WW. On 2026-10-08 no SR250 machine type had an EOS date posted. Warranty and contract end dates are per unit: enter the serial number at https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/warranty-lookup.

What still works after Lenovo support ends

SR250 firmware downloads are not tied to a warranty or contract. Lenovo states that 'For Lenovo Server products, serial numbers are NOT required to download software', whereas Lenovo storage needs a valid serial number with active warranty. On 8 October 2026 the 7Y51 list's newest platform packages were XCC 6.90 (DS577646, 4 September 2025) and UEFI 4.50 (DS577445, 29 August 2025), with no login or warranty flag on either. Before taking an E-2100 unit to 128 GB, check its firmware: Lenovo's E-2100 guide says the 32 GB UDIMMs that upgrade needs require UEFI ISE114H or later.

Lenovo's EOS notice treats End of Service as the withdrawal of support, while stating that 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date'; it does not say whether firmware downloads stay posted. For Lenovo's own cover, the SR250 guide (last updated 2023) lists warranty upgrades to three, four or five years, one- or two-year post-warranty extensions and Premier Support. We did not verify that Lenovo still sells these for a withdrawn SR250 or for a unit of a given age, so ask Lenovo or a Lenovo partner.

  • Lenovo server software needs no serial number to download: 'For Lenovo Server products, serial numbers are NOT required to download software.' Lenovo storage is different: 'it's REQUIRED to enter a valid serial number with active warranty'. SR250 firmware downloads are therefore not tied to a warranty or contract. Vendor support you can still buy

  • Lenovo warranty upgrades and post-warranty extensions (3, 4 or 5 years of coverage; 1-year or 2-year post-warranty extensions; Premier Support) — Listed in the SR250 product guide (last updated 2023). We did not verify that Lenovo still sells these for this withdrawn model or for a unit of a given age. Confirm with Lenovo or a Lenovo partner. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ThinkSystem SR250

A maintenance contract for an SR250 should name the drive layout, because Lenovo offered one of four: four 3.5-inch SATA simple-swap bays, four 3.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap bays, eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap bays, or ten 2.5-inch hot-swap bays, either all SAS/SATA or eight SAS/SATA plus two NVMe. Storage control varies as much: onboard 6 Gbps SATA (AHCI or Intel RSTe RAID), a 12 Gbps RAID 530-8i, 730-8i, 930-8i or 930-16i, a 430-8i/16i HBA, or the 1610-4P NVMe switch adapter. Memory is four ECC UDIMM sockets, capped at 128 GB with Xeon E and 64 GB with Core i3, Pentium Gold or Celeron.

Power needs a close reading. An SR250 built with the single fixed 300 W Gold supply has no power-supply redundancy; only the 450 W Platinum supplies are hot-swap and redundant, so the spares list depends on which was fitted. The XClarity Controller (Standard, Advanced or Enterprise, on the Pilot 4 chip) and its dedicated rear RJ-45 management port belong in scope too. Third-party maintenance typically covers fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and it can carry on after a vendor's End of Service (see Lenovo third-party maintenance); to request a quote, list the build in the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the ThinkSystem SR250?

Keeping an SR250 on maintenance is a reasonable choice while it runs an operating system Lenovo certifies for it. Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide, in data updated on 30 September 2026, rates the E-2200 SR250 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, VMware ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U2, and RHEL 9.0 to 9.3. Firmware downloads are not tied to a contract and Lenovo has posted no EOS, so there is no Lenovo End of Service date for a unit on one of those releases to plan around yet.

The operating-system ceiling is the case for refresh. For the E-2200 SR250 the guide shows 'None' for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 8.0 U3, 9.0 and 9.1, RHEL 9.4 onwards and RHEL 10, so a host that must reach ESXi 8.0 U3 or Windows Server 2025 has no certified route on this model. Lenovo's withdrawal entry names the SR250 V2 as the follow-on, but that model is itself withdrawn from marketing; the OS Interoperability Guide, which marks the SR250 'Withdrawn', points instead to the ThinkSystem SR250 V3 (Xeon 6300, machine types 7DCM/7DCL). For pre-owned hardware, see refurbished Lenovo servers.

  • Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 Sep 2026) lists the SR250 (E-2200) as 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, VMware ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U2, and RHEL 9.0 to 9.3. It shows no support ('None') for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 8.0 U3, 9.0 or 9.1, RHEL 9.4 and later, or RHEL 10. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide marks the SR250 'Withdrawn' and names the ThinkSystem SR250 V3 (Xeon 6300, machine types 7DCM/7DCL) as its replacement server. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • The named follow-on, the SR250 V2, is itself withdrawn from marketing. Its guide says it 'improves on the previous generation SR250'. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo is still releasing SR250 firmware. On 2026-10-08 the newest platform firmware on Lenovo's 7Y51 download list was XCC 6.90 (DS577646, dated 4 Sep 2025) and UEFI 4.50 (DS577445, dated 29 Aug 2025). Neither package was flagged as requiring login or warranty. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
  • In the E-2100 configuration, 32 GB UDIMMs (needed for 128 GB) require UEFI version ISE114H or later. Check the firmware level before a memory upgrade. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Units built with the single fixed 300 W power supply have no power-supply redundancy. Only the 450 W supplies are hot-swap and redundant. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo says it 'has historically provided service and support for at least five years following a product's withdrawal from marketing'. It adds that this 'is subject to change at Lenovo's sole discretion without notice'. This is not a commitment, so no EOS date is derived from it. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)

Two Lenovo Press guides cover this first-generation SR250: LP0963 for Xeon E-2100 builds, first published on 5 November 2018, and LP1272 for E-2200 builds, first published on 18 February 2020. The OS certification quoted on this page comes from the E-2200 entry and the UEFI ISE114H memory rule from the E-2100 guide, so check which processor a unit carries before relying on either. The SR250 V2 is a separate follow-on server, itself withdrawn, whose own guide says it 'improves on the previous generation SR250'. Lenovo's ST250, SR650 and SR630 have pages of their own: ThinkSystem ST250 end of life and SR650 and SR630 end of life.

Questions people ask about the ThinkSystem SR250

Is the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR250 end of life?

It is withdrawn from marketing: the Lenovo Press change log records the withdrawal on 24 April 2023. Lenovo has not posted an End of Service date. On 8 October 2026 its lookup returned no date for 7Y51, 7Y52, 7Y72 or 7Y73, which means no EOS has been posted, not that support has ended.

When will Lenovo stop supporting the SR250?

Lenovo has not said. It posts EOS dates at least 90 days in advance, and none had been posted for any SR250 machine type by 8 October 2026. Lenovo also says it 'has historically provided service and support for at least five years following a product's withdrawal from marketing', but that this is subject to change at its sole discretion without notice, so this page derives no date from it.

Can I download SR250 firmware without a warranty?

Yes. Lenovo does not require a serial number to download software for its server products, and the newest SR250 platform packages on the 7Y51 list on 8 October 2026, XCC 6.90 and UEFI 4.50, were not flagged as needing login or warranty. Lenovo does not say whether downloads will remain after an EOS date.

What came after the ThinkSystem SR250?

Lenovo's withdrawal entry names the ThinkSystem SR250 V2 as the follow-on server, but the SR250 V2 is itself withdrawn from marketing. Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide points to the ThinkSystem SR250 V3, a Xeon 6300 server with machine types 7DCM and 7DCL.

Does the SR250 support ESXi 8.0 U3 or Windows Server 2025?

Not according to Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 September 2026), which shows no support for either on the E-2200 SR250, nor for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1. The newest ESXi release it certifies for that model is 8.0 U2. For the rest of a mixed estate, try the server end-of-life checker.
