Where the ThinkSystem SR550 stands today
Lenovo withdrew the SR550 in steps, and none of them is a support date. The 1st Gen Xeon Scalable configurations went first, in a Lenovo Press change-log entry dated 2 February 2021. On 3 May 2023 every preconfigured model for EMEA and Japan followed, with configure-to-order left open, and the LP1046 change log recorded the whole model as withdrawn on 13 October 2023. No formal withdrawal letter with an effective date was found.
Lenovo sets End of Service by machine type and model, not by serial number. To check a UK unit, open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup (HT504708), choose EMEA and enter the first four characters of the machine type/model on the label, 7X03 (the one-year-warranty type) or 7X04 (three-year), with its model code, such as CTO1WW. Do not fill the gap with arithmetic: Lenovo's remark that it has historically supported products for at least five years after withdrawal can change without notice, and the ThinkSystem ST550's posted EOS falls less than four years after that tower's worldwide withdrawal. Warranty and contract cover are separate and are checked per unit, by serial number, in Lenovo's warranty lookup.
Lenovo sets End of Service by machine type and model, not by serial number. Open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup (https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht504708), choose geo EMEA for the UK, and enter the machine type (7X03 or 7X04, the first four characters of the machine type/model on the product label) and the model code (for example CTO1WW). On 2026-10-08 the lookup held no entry for either SR550 machine type, so no EOS has been posted yet. Warranty and contract end dates are per unit: check the serial number at https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/warranty-lookup.
What still works after Lenovo support ends
SR550 firmware does not sit behind a contract. Lenovo states that, for its server products, serial numbers are not required to download software, so XClarity Controller and UEFI updates can be fetched for any SR550 in or out of warranty (Lenovo storage is different and needs a serial number with active warranty). Lenovo has not said whether SR550 downloads will stay posted once an EOS is reached. Its EOS notice treats EOS as the withdrawal of support, adding that 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date'.
The SR550 product guide lists four Lenovo warranty-upgrade and post-warranty tiers, from Standard Next Business Day up to Premier Support Plus 24x7 4-Hour Response, and warns that some may not be available in all markets or regions. Their availability for a withdrawn SR550 has not been verified, so confirm with Lenovo or a partner and compare an alternative to Lenovo Premier Support.
- Lenovo server software needs no serial number to download: 'For Lenovo Server products, serial numbers are NOT required to download software.' Downloads of SR550 firmware are therefore not tied to a warranty or contract. Lenovo storage is different: it needs a serial number with active warranty. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo's EOS notice treats EOS as the withdrawal of support. It says that 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date'. It does not say whether firmware downloads stay posted after EOS. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- Lenovo warranty upgrades and post-warranty support (Standard Next Business Day, Premier Next Business Day, Premier 24x7 4-Hour Response, Premier Support Plus 24x7 4-Hour Response) — Listed in the SR550 product guide, which notes that 'some warranty upgrades may not be available in all markets or regions'. We did not verify that Lenovo still sells them for this withdrawn model or for a unit of a given age. Confirm with Lenovo or a Lenovo partner. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ThinkSystem SR550
A contract has to match how the unit was built, because the 2U SR550 shipped in several storage layouts: eight 3.5-inch SATA simple-swap bays, eight or twelve 3.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap bays, or up to sixteen 2.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap bays. Storage control ranges from onboard 6 Gb SATA (AHCI or Intel RSTe RAID) to 12 Gb SAS/SATA RAID adapters with up to 8 GB of flash-backed cache, or 12 Gb HBAs, so the schedule should name the adapter and whether it carries flash-backed cache. Power is up to two redundant hot-swap supplies: 550 W or 750 W Platinum, or 750 W Titanium for 200-240 V.
Only the drives (on select models) and the power supplies are hot-swap. The system fans are not, so replacing one means powering the server down; there are three with one processor and four with two, N+1 redundant. Management is the XClarity Controller in Standard, Advanced or Enterprise form on a Pilot 4 chip, with its own 1 GbE RJ-45 port, and memory is twelve TruDDR4 sockets holding up to 768 GB. The maintenance coverage builder lets you list these parts when asking for a quote.

Extend or refresh the ThinkSystem SR550?
Keeping an SR550 on maintenance is easiest to justify where it runs an operating system Lenovo still certifies and will stay there. Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 September 2026) lists the 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable SR550 as Supported & Certified for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 and for VMware ESXi 7.0 to 8.0 U3. A settled host in that range can run on hardware break-fix support while its exit is planned.
The case for refresh is about what comes next. That guide lists 'None' for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 and ESXi 9.1, so Lenovo supports none of them as an upgrade on this platform. The newest platform packages on the 7X03 download list on 8 October 2026 were XCC 10.40 (4 September 2025) and UEFI 4.30 (29 August 2025), with nothing newer posted for either in the 13 months since. If a host needs Windows Server 2025 or ESXi 9, plan the move. The next model in the same line is the ThinkSystem SR650 V3 (5th Gen Xeon, machine types 7D75/7D76/7D77), which Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide points to from its SR550 entry; that guide is a compatibility reference, not an end-of-life notice.
- Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 Sep 2026) lists the SR550 (SP Gen 2) as 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 and for VMware ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3. It lists 'None' for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 and ESXi 9.1, so Lenovo supports neither as an upgrade on this platform. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide marks the SR550 as 'Withdrawn' and names the ThinkSystem SR650 V3 (5th Gen Xeon, machine types 7D75/7D76/7D77) as its replacement server. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
- On 2026-10-08 the newest platform firmware on Lenovo's 7X03 download list was XCC 10.40 (DS577645, dated 4 Sep 2025) and UEFI 4.30 (DS577448, dated 29 Aug 2025), the same packages listed for the SR530. Nothing newer had been posted for either in the 13 months since. The newest items on the list are cross-platform XClarity Essentials tools dated 2-3 Sep 2026. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo says it 'has historically provided service and support for at least five years following a product's withdrawal from marketing', but adds that this 'is subject to change at Lenovo's sole discretion without notice'. Do not use it to compute an SR550 EOS: the ST550's posted EOS is less than four years after its worldwide-withdrawal note. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)

Related models
The SR550 shares its generation with the 1U SR530 and the ST550 tower. Lenovo Press first published all three Gen 1 guides on 11 July 2017, and each had its 1st Gen Xeon configurations withdrawn on 2 February 2021. The ThinkSystem SR530 uses the same XCC and UEFI packages and likewise has no posted EOS, whereas the ST550 has one: 30 June 2029 in EMEA. For the SR650 and SR630, see SR650 and SR630 end of life.

Questions people ask about the ThinkSystem SR550
Is the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR550 end of life?
The SR550 is withdrawn from marketing, so Lenovo no longer sells it new; the LP1046 change log records this on 13 October 2023. Lenovo has not posted an End of Service date for it, and on 8 October 2026 its lookup held nothing for 7X03 or 7X04 in EMEA, NA, AP or LA. An empty lookup means no EOS has been posted, not that support has ended.
When does Lenovo stop supporting the SR550?
Lenovo has not said. It publishes EOS dates by machine type and model in its End of Service Date Lookup, at least 90 days ahead by its own account, so check 7X03 or 7X04 under EMEA from time to time. Its historical 'at least five years after withdrawal' statement is not a commitment and should not be used to work out a date.
Can I still download firmware for the SR550 without a warranty?
Yes. Lenovo's download rule for its server products is that no serial number is required, so SR550 firmware is not tied to a warranty or contract. The newest platform packages on 8 October 2026 were XCC 10.40 and UEFI 4.30, both from 2025. Lenovo has not said whether downloads will stay posted after an EOS is reached.
What came after the ThinkSystem SR550?
The next model in the same line is the ThinkSystem SR650 V3, a 5th Gen Xeon server that Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide points to from the SR550 entry. That guide is a compatibility reference, and no Lenovo end-of-life notice naming a successor for the SR550 was found.
Can I get third-party maintenance for an SR550?
Third-party maintenance generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, and it can carry on past a vendor's end of support. You can request a quote for SR550 cover; it helps to list the drive layout, RAID adapter, power supplies and XClarity Controller tier.
