What Premier Support is, and where an independent alternative fits
Lenovo Premier Support is the OEM's data-centre maintenance programme for ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile, sold in Foundation, Essential and Advanced service levels (with Premier Support Plus above them). It is a genuinely good programme. Its limits are commercial and temporal: you pay Lenovo list-band pricing to renew, and entitlement ends at the per-serial end-of-service date Lenovo publishes for each machine.
Servnet replaces the hardware side of that contract: diagnosis, engineer call-outs, on-site parts replacement and spares cover, including years after Lenovo has stopped selling support for the box. We will not pretend to replace everything. Lenovo software and firmware updates, XClarity entitlements and security patches flow from the OEM entitlement, not from a TPM. For the hardware, yes. What we do not replace is the software side: Lenovo firmware and software updates, XClarity entitlements and security patches come from the OEM, not from us. We are upfront about that split so you can decide what each machine actually needs.
Independent maintenance is widely reported to run 50–70% below OEM support net prices (Gartner Market Guide for Data Center and Network Third-Party Hardware Maintenance, 2019). That is an indicative band, not a quote, and your real number depends on the estate, SLA and Lenovo's own renewal figure. We benchmark against your actual Premier Support renewal, not a made-up list price, so the comparison is honest.
Lenovo publishes end-of-service per serial number, so hardware in the same room can hit that date at different times. Once a box is past it, Premier Support renewal is no longer available from Lenovo, but the hardware is usually fine. Providers report extending well-maintained kit a further 3–5, sometimes up to 7 years. Send us the serials and we will tell you which machines have run out of OEM cover and can move to us.
Be aware that you can. Lenovo firmware, software updates and security patches are tied to the OEM entitlement, so if you drop Premier Support entirely you also drop that stream. Many teams keep a light OEM entitlement or refresh where patching genuinely matters, and use Servnet for hardware cover on the rest. Where a firmware fix or patch is the real answer, we will say so rather than sell you a call-out.
