Where the ThinkSystem SR590 stands today
Two Lenovo milestones matter here, and only one applies to the SR590 so far. Withdrawal from marketing, which ends new sales, shows up in these dated Lenovo Press entries: 16 January 2021, Standard and TopSeller models (Xeon SP Gen 1 guide LP0642, configure-to-order still open); 2 February 2021, the SR590 with 1st Gen Xeon Scalable processors (LP0642); 3 May 2023, various models for customers in EMEA and Japan (Gen 1/Gen 2 guide LP1048); and 1 August 2023, all preconfigured models (LP1048, CTO factory builds still available). LP1048 now calls the SR590 withdrawn without dating the end of CTO.
End of Service, when Lenovo withdraws support for the hardware, has not been posted for either SR590 machine type. Lenovo holds it per geography, machine type and model, so a UK owner should select EMEA in the End of Service Date Lookup and enter the machine type at the start of the label's machine type/model, 7X98 (one-year warranty) or 7X99 (three-year warranty), plus the model code, for example CTO1WW. Lenovo says these dates are posted at least 90 days in advance; on 8 October 2026 neither type had one in EMEA, NA, AP or LA, so support has not ended. Warranty or contract cover on an individual SR590 is a different question, answered by serial number in Lenovo's warranty lookup.
Lenovo sets End of Service by geography, machine type and model, not by serial number. Open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup (https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht504708) and choose geo EMEA for UK units. Enter the machine type (7X98 or 7X99, the first four characters of the machine type/model on the product label) and the model code, for example CTO1WW. On 2026-10-08 neither SR590 machine type had an EOS date posted. Warranty and contract end dates are per unit: enter the serial number at https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/warranty-lookup.
What still works after Lenovo support ends
Getting SR590 firmware does not depend on a warranty or contract: Lenovo server downloads need no serial number, whereas its storage products need a valid serial number with active warranty. Checked on 8 October 2026, the 7X99 list's newest platform firmware, UEFI 4.30 of 29 August 2025 (DS577448) and XCC 10.40 of 4 September 2025 (DS577645), carried no login or warranty flag. Lenovo's EOS notice calls End of Service the withdrawal of support and says 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date', without saying whether firmware downloads remain posted.
For Lenovo-backed cover, the SR590 guide (last updated August 2023) names three routes: warranty upgrades to three, four or five years of coverage, post-warranty extensions of one or two years, and Premier Support. Those listings do not prove current availability: we have not confirmed that Lenovo still offers them on a withdrawn SR590 or on a unit of a particular age, and Lenovo or a Lenovo partner is the place to ask. For comparison, see an alternative to Lenovo Premier Support.
- Lenovo server software needs no serial number to download: 'For Lenovo Server products, serial numbers are NOT required to download software.' Lenovo storage is different: it needs a valid serial number with active warranty. SR590 firmware downloads are therefore not tied to a warranty or contract. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo's EOS notice treats End of Service as the withdrawal of support. It says that 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date'. It does not say whether firmware downloads stay posted after EOS. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- Lenovo warranty upgrades and post-warranty extensions (3, 4 or 5 years of coverage; 1-year or 2-year post-warranty extensions; Premier Support) — Listed in the SR590 product guide (last updated Aug 2023). We did not verify that Lenovo still sells these for this withdrawn model or for a unit of a given age. Confirm with Lenovo or a Lenovo partner. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ThinkSystem SR590
Storage is what an SR590 contract must pin down, because the 2U chassis was offered in three layouts: up to 16 2.5-inch hot-swap bays, all SAS/SATA or including four AnyBay; eight 3.5-inch bays, simple-swap SATA or hot-swap SAS/SATA; or up to 14 3.5-inch hot-swap bays, 12 at the front and two at the rear, with up to four front AnyBay. Control runs from onboard 6 Gb SATA (AHCI or Intel RSTe RAID) to 12 Gb RAID adapters with up to 8 GB of flash-backed cache, or 12 Gb HBAs; NVMe comes from onboard connections on two-processor builds or a 1610-4P switch adapter on one-processor builds.
Beyond storage, list the power supplies (up to two, redundant and hot-swap: 550 W or 750 W Platinum on 100-240 V, or 750 W Titanium on 200-240 V), the 16 TruDDR4 DIMM slots (up to 1 TB with 16x 64 GB RDIMMs), any of the up to four Optane DCPMMs that 2nd Gen builds can take, and the XClarity Controller with its dedicated RJ-45 port. Outside Lenovo, hardware break-fix support generally means another provider diagnosing faults, supplying parts and sending engineers, and that cover need not end when Lenovo's support does.

Extend or refresh the ThinkSystem SR590?
For a 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable SR590 on RHEL 9.0 to 9.3, ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3, or Windows Server 2016, 2019 or 2022, maintenance is a sound way to keep it running. Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide, as updated on 30 September 2026, rates that build 'Supported & Certified' for those releases, firmware downloads are open, and no EOS is posted. Lenovo's statement that it has historically provided service and support for at least five years after withdrawal is not a commitment and is subject to change without notice, so treat it as background, not a date.
Refresh becomes the better answer when the operating system has to move. Lenovo's data lists no certified Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 or 9.1, RHEL 9.4 onwards or RHEL 10 for the 2nd Gen SR590. In the OS Interoperability Guide the SR590 appears as 'Withdrawn', and the model named there, the ThinkSystem SR650 V3 (5th Gen Xeon, machine types 7D75/7D76/7D77), is the next model in the same line. The similarly named SR590 V2 is not a UK option.
- Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 Sep 2026) lists the SR590 with 2nd Gen Xeon SP as 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, VMware ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3, and RHEL 9.0 to 9.3. It shows no support ('None') for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 or 9.1, RHEL 9.4 and later, or RHEL 10. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide marks the SR590 'Withdrawn' and names the ThinkSystem SR650 V3 (5th Gen Xeon, machine types 7D75/7D76/7D77) as its replacement server. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
- The SR590 V2 is not a UK option. It is a ThinkServer 'only available for customers in PRC', and Lenovo tells customers in other markets to 'consider the use of the ThinkSystem SR650 V2 instead'. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo is still releasing SR590 firmware. On 2026-10-08 the newest platform firmware on Lenovo's 7X99 download list was XCC 10.40 (DS577645, dated 4 Sep 2025) and UEFI 4.30 (DS577448, dated 29 Aug 2025). Neither package was flagged as requiring login or warranty. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
- Lenovo says it 'has historically provided service and support for at least five years following a product's withdrawal from marketing'. It adds that this 'is subject to change at Lenovo's sole discretion without notice'. This is not a commitment, so no EOS date is derived from it. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)

The SR590's own documentation runs across two Lenovo Press guides: LP0642 for Xeon SP Gen 1 builds, first published on 28 November 2017, and LP1048 for Gen 1 and Gen 2, first published on 2 April 2019. The ThinkServer SR590 V2 shares the model number but is 'only available for customers in PRC', and Lenovo tells customers in other markets to 'consider the use of the ThinkSystem SR650 V2 instead'; that server has its own ThinkSystem SR650 V2 end-of-life page. The SR650 and SR630 end-of-life deep dive covers two further Lenovo models.

Questions people ask about the ThinkSystem SR590
Is the Lenovo SR590 end of life?
It is withdrawn from marketing; the most recent dated entry, on 1 August 2023, withdrew all preconfigured models while leaving CTO factory builds available. No End of Service date has been posted: Lenovo's lookup returned nothing for 7X98 or 7X99 on 8 October 2026.
Is the SR590 V2 the upgrade for an SR590 in the UK?
No. Lenovo describes the SR590 V2 as a ThinkServer only available for customers in the PRC and tells customers in other markets to consider the ThinkSystem SR650 V2 instead. Separately, Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide lists the ThinkSystem SR650 V3 against the SR590, and that is the next model in the same line.
How do I find the End of Service date for my SR590?
Use Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup with geo EMEA, machine type 7X98 or 7X99, and your model code, such as CTO1WW; the date is set per machine type and model, not per serial number. On 8 October 2026 no SR590 date had been posted. Warranty or contract end is a separate check, by serial number, in Lenovo's warranty lookup.
Can I still get firmware for the SR590?
Yes, and without a contract: Lenovo's server downloads need no serial number. On 8 October 2026 the 7X99 list's latest platform packages were XCC 10.40 and UEFI 4.30, neither marked as needing login or warranty. What Lenovo has not said is whether those downloads will stay posted once an End of Service date passes.
Can an SR590 be covered by third-party maintenance?
Third-party providers generally offer fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers for servers like this, and their cover can run past a vendor's End of Service. For an SR590, list the drive layout, including any rear 3.5-inch bays, the RAID adapter and the power supply type when you build a coverage quote.
