The ProLiant DL20 Gen11 is HPE’s compact one-socket 1U rack server: 37.84 cm deep in SFF form, with four DDR5 UDIMM slots and, since HPE removed the Xeon E-2400 option kits as obsolete, a Xeon 6300 or Pentium G7400 in configure-to-order builds. HPE aims it at space-constrained sites. This sheet maps its three chassis, the storage and power choices, and the ordering rules that constrain them.

01 — Overview

The DL20 Gen11 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL20 Gen11 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Compact: HPE lists a depth of 37.84 cm for the SFF chassis and 38.22 cm for the LFF one, at 4.32 cm high and 43.46 cm wide.
  • The Flex Slot supplies (500 W, 800 W or 1000 W) are hot-plug and can be paired for 1+1 redundancy — the 290 W entry unit cannot.
  • HPE lets the internal OROC storage slot and the external OCP 3.0 slot be used together, so a controller in the OROC slot leaves both the OCP slot and the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot free.
  • Four 1GbE ports come on the board (Broadcom BCM5719) before any adapter is added.
  • Quiet in HPE’s measurements: 27–28 dBA at the bystander position in all four test builds, idle and operating.

Watch-outs

  • Memory stops at 128 GB (4 × 32 GB UDIMM), and populating both DIMMs in a channel lowers the speed to 4000 MT/s with 16 GB modules or 3600 MT/s with 32 GB ones.
  • The Xeon E-2400 option kits are gone: Versions 26 and 28 of the QuickSpecs removed them as obsolete, so factory builds now choose from nine Xeon 6300 parts or the two-core Pentium G7400.
  • Six SFF drives is the ceiling, and only two can be NVMe — the U.3 drives need the 2SFF kit and HPE restricts them to 25 °C ambient environments.
  • No SR-IOV, and port 1 of the embedded NIC carries iLO traffic unless you add the enablement kit that provides a dedicated management port.
  • The three fans are single-rotor, not hot-plug and not redundant.
  • The 2LFF non-hot-plug model is the most limited: HPE lists just 1 TB and 4 TB NHP SATA drives for it, 8 TB in all, and Tri-Mode controllers are not supported.

18 supported processors, mapped

HPE’s feature table lists 18 processors — nine Xeon 6300, eight Xeon E-2400 and one Pentium G7400 — but the ordering step now offers only the nine Xeon 6300 kits and the Pentium, the Xeon E kits having been removed as obsolete. Every part pairs with 4400 MT/s memory and none goes beyond 12 cores or 95 W, so the decision comes down to cores, clock speed and TDP.

  • HPE’s two Xeon 6349P entries disagree: the feature table gives 2.7 GHz, 8 cores, 24 MB and 65 W, the option kit 3.6 GHz, 6 cores and 95 W.
  • The What’s New list still says Xeon 6300 support stops at 8 cores, yet the 12-core 6377P — added in Version 27 — is in the feature table and the option kits.
  • Choosing any 95 W processor adds an extra CPU baffle at the factory.
  • HPE notes that the two-core Pentium G7400 falls short of ENERGY STAR 4.0.
  • One processor only, on the Intel C262 chipset.
  • Two pre-configured servers built on the E-2434 and E-2414 are still printed in the document.
03 — Memory

4 DDR5 DIMM slots

Four ECC UDIMM slots on two channels, two DIMMs per channel, filled with 16 GB single-rank or 32 GB dual-rank kits. Four 32 GB modules reach the 128 GB ceiling. RDIMMs, LRDIMMs and non-ECC UDIMMs are all ruled out.

  • The kit names read DDR5-4800 CAS-40-39-39, but the memory table prints a native 5600 MT/s at CAS 36-36-36 for the same part numbers; in either case the platform runs them at 4400 MT/s at most.
  • Populate slots in the order 3-A, 1-B, 4-C, 2-D. HPE recommends one, two or four DIMMs, and the two DIMMs sharing a channel must be the same capacity.
  • DIMMs from earlier ProLiant generations are neither qualified nor warranted in this server.
  • The pre-configured models ship with a single 16 GB DIMM, and a note in that section caps field upgrades at 64 GB (4 × 16 GB) — half the 128 GB given for the platform.
04 — Storage

4 drive-cage kits, up to 6 bays

Storage is fixed by the configure-to-order chassis you start from — 4 SFF hot-plug, 2 LFF hot-plug or 2 LFF non-hot-plug — plus one kit that takes the SFF model to six bays. HPE sells that kit separately, so the layouts below are the complete configurations the choices produce.

The 4SFF chassis with the 2SFF HDD Enablement Kit (P65406-B21). NVMe U.3 drives, two at most, can only be chosen with this kit fitted. One SSD note says 24G SAS drives keep their full speed in the added 2SFF cage; another says every DL20 Gen11 runs them at 12G. HPE’s capacity table reaches 92.16 TB with six 15.36 TB SAS SSDs.

  • Intel VROC SATA RAID (RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10) is built into every model but ships disabled — the BIOS defaults to AHCI — and cannot be enabled at the factory; the customer switches it on. It needs UEFI boot, has no VMware support and cannot span drive cages or drive form factors.
  • Tri-Mode options: the MR408i-o (4 GB cache) or MR216i-o in the internal OROC slot, or the MR216i-p in the PCIe slot, each cabled to the drives with one of HPE’s DL20 OCP or PCIe cable kits.
  • The Smart Array E208e-p is listed for external storage only.
  • Boot: the NS204i-u module, which mirrors a pair of 480 GB M.2 NVMe drives in hardware (cable kit P65410-B21), or up to two M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs through the LP Serial Port/iLO/M.2 Enablement Kit. Smart Array controllers do not manage the M.2 drives.
  • HPE’s maximum-storage table quotes M.2 at 8 TB (2 × 4 TB), yet the largest M.2 SSD in the options list is 1.92 TB.
  • HPE suggests a 25 °C ambient for both the M.2 SSDs and the NS204i-u; at 35 °C or more, expect louder fans.
  • When VROC is in use, install HPE Agentless Management in the OS: it passes drive temperatures to the fan control, and HPE warns of extra noise if it is missing.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

HPE lists two NVIDIA cards — an RTX A400 with 4 GB and an RTX A1000 with 8 GB — and the DL20 has a single PCIe slot to hold one. Neither entry carries a power, width or quantity figure. Installing either card disables the iLO video port, and HPE’s note says to use the iLO web GUI instead.

The processor drives a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot; the two OCP-format sockets are x4 links from the PCH — an external one for a network card and an internal OROC one for a storage controller — and both can be used together.

  • HPE lists the DL320 Gen11 x16 FHHL riser (P52753-B21) as a mandatory selection for this model. Its table gives the kit a second, x8 position, while the DL20 slot table shows only the one x16 slot.
  • At most one PCIe and one OCP network adapter; the OCP card also needs the External OCP Cable Kit (P65411-B21).
  • Adapters run from 1GbE to 10/25GbE (Broadcom, Intel, Mellanox); no 100GbE or InfiniBand option is listed.
  • Networking SR-IOV is not supported.

7 power supplies, 290–1,000 W

Two supply families: HPE’s standard 290 W non-redundant unit, and hot-plug Flex Slot units of 500 W, 800 W or 1000 W that can be doubled up for 1+1. Mixing is not allowed: a second supply added for redundancy has to be the identical part.

  • P65409-B21 is named two ways — the DL20 Gen11 290 W ATX FIO power supply kit in the ordering step, an ATX PSU enablement kit in the standard features — and either way it is sold only factory-integrated, never as a later standalone option.
  • EU Lot 9, which applies to UK sales from 1 January 2024: HPE names the 290 W Platinum, 800 W and 1000 W supplies as compliant. The 500 W Flex Slot unit is rated 94 % single-output against the 96 % single-output requirement and is on neither of HPE’s lists.
  • Maximum heat output: 3753 BTU/hr for the 1000 W unit at 100 V AC, 3071 BTU/hr for the 800 W at 200 V AC and 1979 BTU/hr for the 500 W at 100 V AC.
  • An 800 W −48 V DC Flex Slot supply (865434-B21) is named in the standard features but not in the ordering step for supplies.

Four builds that suit the DL20 Gen11

Four small-site builds, each assembled only from parts our configurator accepts on the DL20 Gen11. Each link opens the configurator pre-filled with two power supplies and one of each drive cage named, ready to adjust.

Branch office

Mirrored two-disk file server

Shared folders, print queues and a local directory controller need little processor. A four-core Xeon 6325P, two DIMMs and a mirrored pair of 4 TB SATA disks in the 2LFF hot-plug chassis cover them, with the embedded VROC SATA RAID doing the mirroring instead of a controller card.

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen11?

It tops out at 128 GB — four 32 GB DDR5 ECC UDIMMs. HPE offers just two unbuffered kits, 16 GB and 32 GB. A lone DIMM in a channel runs at 4400 MT/s; filling both slots of a channel drops that to 4000 MT/s (16 GB) or 3600 MT/s (32 GB).

Which processors can I order for the DL20 Gen11?

Nine Intel Xeon 6300 processors — 4 to 12 cores, 55 to 95 W — or the two-core Pentium G7400, in the single socket. Eight Xeon E-2400 models remain in HPE’s feature table, but the Summary of Changes records their option kits being removed as obsolete in Versions 26 and 28.

How many drives does the DL20 Gen11 hold?

Four hot-plug SFF bays on the SFF chassis, six with HPE’s 2SFF kit, or two LFF bays in hot-plug or non-hot-plug form. At most two of the drives can be NVMe U.3, and only when the 2SFF kit is fitted.

Does the DL20 Gen11 support redundant power supplies?

Yes, with Flex Slot supplies: two identical 500 W, 800 W or 1000 W units give 1+1 hot-plug redundancy. The 290 W entry supply is non-redundant, and HPE does not allow two different supplies in one server.

Can the DL20 Gen11 take a GPU?

Two NVIDIA cards are listed for it — the RTX A400 with 4 GB of memory and the RTX A1000 with 8 GB — and its single PCIe slot takes one of them. Fitting either card switches off the iLO video output, and HPE tells users to work through the iLO web GUI instead.

What expansion slots does the DL20 Gen11 have?

One PCIe 5.0 x16 full-height, half-length slot wired to the processor, an OCP 3.0 x4 slot for networking and an internal OROC x4 slot for a storage controller. HPE allows one PCIe and one OCP network adapter at most.

How big and heavy is the DL20 Gen11?

It is 1U, 4.32 cm high and 43.46 cm wide, and 37.84 cm deep with SFF drives or 38.22 cm with LFF drives. HPE gives 9 to 12 kg for a loaded system of any chassis type.

Can I run VMware on the DL20 Gen11’s built-in RAID?

Not on VROC: HPE limits the embedded SATA RAID to Windows Server and Linux, with no VMware support. Other storage options HPE lists include the MR408i-o, MR216i-o and MR216i-p Tri-Mode controllers and the NS204i-u boot device; check the hypervisor against HPE’s certification matrices.

Is the DL20 Gen11 quiet enough for an office?

HPE declares 27–28 dBA at the bystander position and 3.9 B sound power for its four test configurations, idle and operating. Additional options can raise those levels, and HPE warns of louder fans when NVMe drives run above a 25 °C ambient or M.2 drives at 35 °C or more.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen11 end of life?

HPE’s QuickSpecs (Version 28, 8 September 2026) carry no end-of-sale or end-of-support date for the server; what has been removed are individual option kits, such as the Xeon E-2400 processors. If HPE sets a date later, our server end-of-life checker will list it.
