01 — Overview

The ML110 Gen11 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the ML110 Gen11 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Eighteen single-socket Xeon Scalable options across 4th and 5th Gen, from 8 to 32 cores and 125 W to 185 W, including one-socket-optimised U parts.
  • Sixteen RDIMM slots on eight channels — 1.5 TB with 96 GB DDR5-5600 modules on 5th Gen processors, 1 TB with 64 GB DDR5-4800 on 4th Gen.
  • Two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots from the factory, two more through GPU riser kits, and an OCP 3.0 x16 slot that takes either a network adapter or an OCP RAID controller.
  • Up to two drive cages — sixteen SFF or eight LFF hot-plug bays, or four LFF plus eight SFF on the LFF chassis — and two onboard M.2 slots on top.
  • Three years of parts, labour and on-site cover as standard, and a tower-to-rack kit for a later move into a cabinet.

Watch-outs

  • An NVIDIA L4 caps the processor at 150 W TDP, needs the GPU riser, L4 support and redundant fan kits, and limits inlet air to 25°C.
  • No NVMe drive bays: NVMe is M.2 only — two onboard slots or the NS204i-u, which occupies the embedded controller’s port.
  • Noise climbs with performance parts: 24 dBA operating for HPE’s Entry builds but 37 dBA for its Performance SFF build.
  • The Bronze 3508U is limited to PCIe Gen4, and the 3508U, Silver 4510 and 4509Y lose VROC NVMe RAID and the 96 GB DIMM.
  • The 1600 W supply runs on 200–240 VAC only, and any 96 GB DIMM limits inlet temperature to 25°C.

  • Six parts are asterisked and show UPI as N/A: the Gold 6421N, 5412U, 5411N and 5512U and the Bronze 3408U and 3508U. HPE’s suffix decoder describes U parts as supported in one-socket configurations only.
  • Rated memory speed varies by part: 4800 MT/s for the Gold 6426Y, 5512U and 5515+; 4000 MT/s for the Gold 5418N, Silver 4416+ and 4410Y and Bronze 3408U; 4400 MT/s for the others.
  • The Gold 5416S appears at 4400 MT/s in the processor table but at 4000 MT/s in its option-kit note.
  • Three processors in the Standard Features table — the Gold 5412U and 5418N and the Bronze 3408U — have no option kit in the Step 2a lists.
  • The Bronze 3508U supports PCIe up to Gen4 only. The chipset is Intel’s C741; HPE gives no thread counts or turbo clocks.

16 DDR5 DIMM slots

Sixteen RDIMM slots on eight channels, two per channel. HPE ties DIMM speed to processor generation: DDR5-4800 kits of 16, 32 and 64 GB for 4th Gen Xeon, and DDR5-5600 kits of 16, 32, 64 and 96 GB for 5th Gen. The ceilings are 1.0 TB and 1.5 TB, both quoted at 4400 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel.

  • Populate 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs.
  • The 96 GB DDR5-5600 DIMM is not supported with the Silver 4510 and 4509Y or the Bronze 3508U, and it restricts inlet air to 25°C with fans running faster and louder.
  • Ranks can be mixed on a channel only as a 2R DIMM in the white slot with a 1R in the black, and only with all sixteen slots filled; x4 and x8 DIMMs cannot share the socket, nor RDIMMs mix with LRDIMMs.
  • Protection is Advanced ECC, which corrects single- and multi-bit errors confined to one DRAM chip.
  • The population guidelines mention 128 GB and 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, but no such kit appears in the ML110 memory options.

7 drive-cage kits, up to 16 bays

Three CTO chassis set the first cage — 4 LFF non-hot-plug SATA, 4 LFF hot-plug SAS/SATA or 8 SFF hot-plug SAS/SATA — and a second cage kit doubles it. The LFF hot-plug chassis can also take an 8SFF cage for a mixed front, while the non-hot-plug chassis cannot mix cage types. Every front bay is SAS or SATA; NVMe is confined to M.2.

  • The embedded Intel VROC SATA controller reaches 4+4 LFF or 8 SFF drives plus two M.2 SATA SSDs, in RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10. It is off by default, runs in UEFI mode only, and handles SATA only — SAS drives need an added controller.
  • The tri-mode MR controllers come in OCP form (MR216i-o, MR408i-o, MR416i-o), which leave the PCIe slots free, and as PCIe cards (MR216i-p, MR408i-p, MR416i-p). The cached models need a battery or hybrid-capacitor energy pack, and MR and SR internal controllers cannot be mixed.
  • Two onboard M.2 slots take two SATA or two NVMe M.2 SSDs, never a mix; NVMe RAID 1 across them needs Intel VROC RAID 1 (S3Q19A or S3Q39AAE).
  • The NS204i-u (two 480 GB M.2 NVMe in RAID 1) needs its enablement kit and the redundant fan kit, is unsupported on the NHP chassis, and takes the embedded controller’s port, leaving embedded SATA unavailable to the bays.
  • The media area holds one optical drive and one half-height internal LTO drive; the LTO drive needs the P62356-B21 cable kit and a port on an MR216i or MR408i-o controller.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Two NVIDIA cards, up to two of either but never mixed: the L4 24 GB, which goes only on the GPU riser kits, and the RTX 4000 Ada, which can sit in slots 1 to 3 with its 8-pin/16-pin cable kit. Every accelerator needs the redundant fan kit, and HPE recommends system memory at twice the accelerator memory. Version 34’s change log records adding an NVIDIA RTX A1000 8GB, yet no A1000 appears in Version 36’s accelerator options. Up to 2 × NVIDIA L4 (riser slots, CPU ≤ 150 W, 25°C inlet) or 2 × RTX 4000 Ada (slots 1–3); double-width cards only in slot 2.

How the ML110 Gen11 compares with its family

The ML110 Gen11 sits between the ML30 Gen11 and MicroServer Gen11 on one side and the ML350 on the other. The ML30 and MicroServer use Xeon 6300, Xeon E-2400 or Pentium processors with four UDIMM slots and a 128 GB ceiling; the ML110 moves to Xeon Scalable, RDIMMs and OCP 3.0. The ML350 Gen11 is the tower above, with two sockets and 32 DIMM slots, and the DL320 Gen11 is a 1U single-socket Xeon Scalable rack server.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the ML110 Gen11

Four ML110 Gen11 configurations: a 512 GB hypervisor, a two-L4 inference node, a quiet LFF file server and a branch database. All of them validate in our HPE configurator, where each can be opened as a starting point.

Virtualisation

Single-socket hypervisor with 512 GB

The 28-core Gold 5512U is a one-socket-optimised 5th Gen part, and eight 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMMs put one module on each of its eight channels. An OCP MR416i-o with 8 GB cache runs the eight SAS SSDs without using a PCIe slot, leaving slots for a 25GbE card and later growth.

  • 1 × Xeon-Gold 5512U28 cores @ 2.1 GHz, 185 W
  • 8 × 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 512 GB, one per channel
  • 8 × 3.84 TB 2.5-inch SAS SSD — 30.72 TB raw
  • HPE MR416i-o OCP controller, 8 GB cache
  • Intel E810-XXVDA2 2 × 10/25GbE SFP28 PCIe
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium, hot-plug (1+1)
  • Windows Server 2025 Datacenter
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

The MR416i-o occupies the OCP slot and needs an energy pack plus the SFF OROC cable kit (P53485-B21), so networking goes on a PCIe card. If the SSDs are 24G SAS4 models the Redundant Fan Kit becomes mandatory, and HPE lists SAS4 drives among options to avoid in noise-sensitive rooms.

AI inference

Two NVIDIA L4 cards for on-site inference

HPE allows two L4s on the riser kits provided the processor stays at or below 150 W, so this build uses the 16-core, 150 W Silver 4514Y. 256 GB of RDIMM is well over twice the 48 GB of GPU memory, and SATA SSDs on embedded VROC keep the OCP slot free for 25GbE.

  • 1 × Xeon-Silver 4514Y16 cores @ 2 GHz, 150 W
  • 2 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB on the GPU riser kits
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 256 GB
  • 4 × 7.68 TB 2.5-inch SATA SSD — 30.72 TB raw
  • Embedded Intel VROC SATA RAID
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE SFP28 OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium, hot-plug (1+1)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (3-year subscription)
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

Two L4s need the GPU riser kit, the second GPU riser kit, the L4 support kit and the Redundant Fan Kit; the support kit’s DIMM blanks go in the eight empty slots. The embedded controller reaches the SFF cage through the SFF OROC cable kit (P53485-B21). Inlet air is limited to 25°C, and HPE lists accelerators among the options that raise fan noise.

Office file server

Quiet LFF file server following HPE’s acoustic advice

For noise-sensitive rooms HPE recommends LFF cages and SATA drives and avoiding fast SAS drives, the NS204i-u, 96 GB DIMMs and accelerators. Its Entry LFF test build — a 125 W Bronze processor, a SATA LFF drive and a 500 W supply — measured 22 dBA idle and 24 dBA operating. This build follows that pattern with the 125 W Silver 4509Y.

  • 1 × Xeon-Silver 4509Y8 cores @ 2.6 GHz, 125 W
  • 4 × 16 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 64 GB
  • 4 × 24 TB 3.5-inch SATA HDD, hot-plug — 96 TB raw
  • Embedded Intel VROC SATA RAID
  • Embedded 2 × 1GbE (Broadcom BCM5720)
  • 2 × 500 W Flex Slot Platinum, hot-plug (1+1)
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Basic

HPE’s acoustic figures come from single-drive test builds, so a full cage may be louder. The 4509Y supports neither the 96 GB DIMM nor VROC NVMe RAID; a second 4LFF cage kit takes the server to eight bays.

Branch database

SQL server with mirrored NS204i-u boot

The 16-core Gold 6426Y is the only 4th Gen processor on HPE’s list rated for DDR5-4800, which suits eight 32 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMMs. An MR408i-p runs eight SAS SSDs while the NS204i-u keeps the operating system on a mirrored M.2 pair, and a 10GbE OCP adapter leaves the PCIe slots for the controller and growth.

  • 1 × Xeon-Gold 6426Y16 cores @ 2.5 GHz, 185 W
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 256 GB
  • 8 × 1.92 TB 2.5-inch SAS SSD — 15.36 TB raw
  • HPE MR408i-p tri-mode controller, 4 GB cache
  • HPE NS204i-u boot device (2 × 480 GB M.2 NVMe, RAID 1)
  • Broadcom BCM57412 2 × 10GbE SFP+ OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 800 W Flex Slot Platinum, hot-plug (1+1)
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

The NS204i-u needs its enablement kit and the Redundant Fan Kit and raises fan noise; HPE suggests the onboard M.2 slots as a quieter boot option. Pair the MR408i-p with a battery or hybrid-capacitor energy pack, and with cable kit P55859-B21 for the SFF cage.

12 — FAQ

ML110 Gen11 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11?

1.5 TB, using sixteen 96 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMMs with a 5th Gen Xeon Scalable processor. With a 4th Gen processor the limit is 1.0 TB, from sixteen 64 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMMs. HPE quotes both at 4400 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel, and the 96 GB module is not supported with the Silver 4510 and 4509Y or the Bronze 3508U.

Which processors does the ML110 Gen11 support?

One 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor. HPE’s tables list eighteen: eleven 4th Gen parts from the 8-core Bronze 3408U to the 32-core Gold 6421N, and seven 5th Gen parts from the 8-core Bronze 3508U to the 28-core Gold 5512U. TDP ranges from 125 W to 185 W, and three of the listed 4th Gen parts have no option kit.

How many drives does the ML110 Gen11 hold?

Up to sixteen 2.5-inch or eight 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives in two cages, or four LFF plus eight SFF on the LFF chassis. Two onboard M.2 slots add SATA or NVMe boot drives. There are no NVMe drive bays.

Does the ML110 Gen11 support GPUs?

Yes, up to two, of one type: NVIDIA L4 24 GB cards on the GPU riser kits, or NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada cards in slots 1 to 3. Every GPU needs the Redundant Fan Kit. With L4s the processor is limited to 150 W TDP and inlet air to 25°C.

How many PCIe slots and what networking does the ML110 Gen11 have?

Two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots as standard and up to four with the two GPU riser kits, plus one OCP 3.0 slot at PCIe 5.0 x16. The OCP slot takes either a network adapter or an OCP RAID controller. Two embedded 1GbE ports and a dedicated iLO port are built in, and adapters run up to 100GbE.

What power supplies does the ML110 Gen11 use?

Up to two hot-plug Flex Slot supplies: Platinum at 500 W, 800 W or 1600 W, or Titanium at 1000 W. Two identical units provide 1+1 redundancy, and different supplies cannot be mixed. The 1600 W unit needs 200–240 VAC.

Can the ML110 Gen11 be rack-mounted, and how big is it?

Yes. As a tower it measures 46.2 cm high, 19.5 cm wide and 58.7 cm deep; with the ML Gen11/Gen12 tower-to-rack conversion kit (P47394-B21) it occupies 5.5U of rack height. The kit ships as a separate package and cannot be factory-integrated. Weight runs from 20.1 kg to 33.2 kg depending on configuration.

How loud is the ML110 Gen11?

HPE measured 22 dBA at the bystander position at idle for all four test builds. Under load its Entry LFF and SFF builds stayed at 24 dBA, the Base SFF build reached 31 dBA and the Performance SFF build 37 dBA. For quiet rooms HPE advises LFF cages, SATA drives and avoiding fast SAS drives, the NS204i-u, 96 GB DIMMs, GPUs and NICs of 100Gb or more.

Should I choose the ML110 Gen11, the ML30 Gen11 or the ML350 Gen11?

The ML30 Gen11 is the entry tower: Xeon 6300 or E-2400, four UDIMM slots and 128 GB. The ML110 moves to Xeon Scalable with sixteen RDIMM slots, OCP 3.0 and two GPUs in one socket. The ML350 Gen11 adds a second socket and 32 DIMM slots.

Is the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 end of life?

HPE’s QuickSpecs give no sign of it. Version 36, dated 13 July 2026, lists no end-of-sale or end-of-support date for the ML110 Gen11; its recent revisions retire obsolete pre-configured model SKUs and individual option part numbers, not the platform. Check the live position with our server end-of-life checker.
