01 — Overview

The ML350 Gen11 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the ML350 Gen11 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Two ways to start: the LFF chassis mixes 4LFF and 8SFF boxes up to three, while the SFF chassis stacks 8SFF boxes or swaps to one factory-fitted x4 NVMe or 12-bay E3.S cage.
  • Fifty-seven Xeon Scalable processors appear in HPE’s tables, from the 8-core Bronze 3408U to the 64-core Platinum 8592+; HPE rates each at 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes but holds the Bronze 3408U and 3508U to PCIe Gen4.
  • Up to ten PCIe 5.0 slots on three risers — eight full-height, full-length and two half-height — plus two OCP 3.0 slots.
  • An LTO-8 or LTO-9 tape drive can live inside the chassis in Box 1, and the tertiary riser powers it even on a one-processor server.
  • HPE declares 3.9 to 4.1 B at idle and 4.1 to 4.2 B operating for its five test builds — 25 to 26 dBA at the bystander position.

Watch-outs

  • The printed 8.0 TB memory maximum assumes 256 GB DIMMs, yet the largest kit in HPE’s option list is 128 GB, which gives 4 TB across 32 slots.
  • The x4 NVMe and 12EDSFF cages are factory-only, replace the default cage and exclude every other cage, so those builds stop at 8 NVMe or 12 E3.S drives.
  • A 4th Gen (x4xx) server cannot be field-upgraded to 5th Gen (x5xx) processors, and the two sockets must carry the same model.
  • Any GPU brings both the Redundant and Second CPU fan kits, x16 cards need 2x16 risers, and the External GPU Fan Kit blanks the rear of the primary and secondary risers.
  • The 12EDSFF cage demands two processors and caps the inlet temperature at 25 °C.

  • Seven parts are single-socket only: the U-series 6414U, 3408U and 3508U, plus the 6421N, 5411N, 8581V and 8558U.
  • Under 195 W a processor takes the Standard heat sink (P47223-B21); at 195 W and above it takes the Performance heat sink (P47224-B21), and from 300 W the Redundant and Second CPU fan kits too.
  • The Bronze 3408U and 3508U are limited to PCIe Gen4, and Intel VROC NVMe is not available with the 4510, 4509Y or 3508U.
  • Processors talk over UPI at 16 GT/s; the explorer shows how many links each SKU has.
  • Processor option kits contain only the processor — heat sinks and fans are separate lines on the order.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Each processor controls eight DDR5 channels with two RDIMM slots per channel, so a two-socket ML350 Gen11 has 32 slots and a single-socket one can use half of them. DDR5-4800 kits go with 4th Gen processors and DDR5-5600 kits with 5th Gen; the processor’s own rating sets the speed the memory finally runs at.

  • Per socket, HPE permits 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs; the 96 GB kits are limited to 8 or 16 per processor.
  • The 8.0 TB maximum HPE prints — 32 × 256 GB at 4400 MT/s, two per channel — depends on a 256 GB DIMM the option list doesn’t offer. With the 128 GB kits that are listed, the ceiling is 4 TB.
  • The fan and population rules still mention 256 GB DIMMs: 25 °C maximum inlet without the redundant fan configuration, 30 °C with it.
  • In HPE’s pre-configured models the 12-core Silver 4410Y runs 32 GB DDR5-4800 DIMMs at 4000 MT/s, a processor limit.
  • Advanced ECC is the only memory protection scheme listed.

4 drive-cage kits, up to 24 bays

Choose the chassis first. The LFF CTO server arrives with one 4LFF box and can add two more LFF or SFF boxes; the SFF CTO server arrives with one tri-mode 8SFF box and adds up to two more, or trades it for a factory-fitted x4 NVMe or 12-bay E3.S cage. The layouts below are complete maximums; the kit chart lists every cage.

  • Hybrid LFF-plus-SFF builds start from the LFF CTO server (P48404-B21).
  • Embedded Intel VROC SATA handles up to 12 LFF drives in groups of four, or 8 SFF drives; with an NS204i-u fitted it drops to 8. It is disabled by default and works in UEFI mode only.
  • For VROC NVMe, each socket has four x8 PCIe 5.0 connectors that cable up to eight x4 bays directly; arrays need a RAID 1 or Premium licence on the order.
  • MegaRAID (MR) and SmartRAID (SR) internal controllers can’t share a server, and OCP-form controllers fit only Slot 14 (OCP 1).
  • The NS204i-u boot device needs the ML350 Gen11 NS204i-u Enablement Kit (P48403-B21) and the Second CPU Fan Kit.
  • Internal tape takes Box 1 and needs the tertiary riser (P49693-B21), the LTO support kit (P62309-B21) and a free port on an MR216i-o/p or MR408i-o.
  • For the E3.S build the storage table prints 183.6 TB as “12 × 15.3 TB”; HPE’s drive list has 15.36 TB E3.S parts but none of 15.3 TB, and twelve 15.36 TB drives would make 184.32 TB.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Five NVIDIA cards are listed, and most of their rules concern cooling. Every GPU needs the Redundant and Second CPU fan kits, x16 cards need a 2x16 riser holding two cards each, and HPE’s inlet-temperature table falls as drive boxes are added — only the L4 and RTX A1000 carry a 30 °C rating in every one of the five storage columns without HPE’s limited two-processor, two-GPU setup. Up to 8 × RTX A1000 (x8), 4 × L40, A16 or L4, or 2 × L40S (slots 2 and 6, processors ≤ 190 W).

HPE gives each processor 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes (Gen4 on the two Bronze parts) and eight DDR5 channels. The primary riser belongs to processor 1; the secondary and tertiary risers need processor 2, so a single-socket ML350 Gen11 has only the primary riser’s four x8 or two x16 slots.

  • Slots 1 to 8 are full-height, full-length with x16 connectors; slots 9 and 10 on the 2x8 tertiary riser are half-height, half-length.
  • The 2x16 primary riser (P48406-B21) is a factory-only option that replaces the default 4x8 riser.
  • The tertiary riser occupies two of processor 2’s MCIO connectors; without that processor its slots have no function, although it still powers an internal LTO drive.
  • A one-processor server needs the OCP1 Enablement Kit for an x16 NIC in Slot 14, and any order with two OCP adapters needs the OCP2 Enablement Kit.
  • Nothing is embedded for networking; the CTO default is a Broadcom BCM5719 four-port 1 Gb OCP3 adapter.

  • The 500 W supply is supported only with a single 125 W processor.
  • Both the 1600 W Platinum and the 1800–2200 W Titanium need 200–240 V AC; the larger unit gives 1799 W at 200 V AC and 2200 W at 240 V AC.
  • Under the −48 V DC unit the option list also mentions 277 V AC and 380 V DC input, while its name, its 40–72 V DC rating and its lug-kit requirement all describe a DC supply.
  • Maximum heat load runs from 1,832 BTU/hr (500 W at 240 V AC) to 7,962 BTU/hr (1800–2200 W at 240 V AC).
  • Three non-hot-plug system fans are standard, and a second processor needs the Second CPU Fan Kit as the fourth fan.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the ML350 Gen11

Four ML350 Gen11 builds, each made only of parts the configurator accepts for this tower, opening pre-filled when you follow the link. The configurator places one of each drive cage and two power supplies, so any extra boxes, fan kits, risers or enablement and cable kits HPE requires are added on the quote.

Office virtualisation

Two-socket Hyper-V tower for a branch

Two 24-core Gold 6542Y processors give 48 cores and 1 TB of DDR5 for a branch’s virtual machines in one box; the 6542Y is rated at 5200 MT/s, so the DDR5-5600 DIMMs run at that speed. Eight SAS SSDs fill the tri-mode 8SFF box behind an MR416i-o in the OCP slot, which leaves the PCIe risers free.

  • 2 × Xeon Gold 6542Y24 cores @ 2.9 GHz, 250 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 1 TB (runs at 5200 MT/s)
  • 8 × 3.84 TB SAS SSD in the tri-mode 8SFF box
  • MR416i-o 8 GB cache controller in Slot 14 (OCP 1)
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP3 in Slot 15
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • Windows Server 2025 Datacenter

At 250 W these processors need the Performance heat sink, the second processor brings the Second CPU Fan Kit, and two OCP adapters need the OCP2 Enablement Kit — all added on the quote.

Backup & tape

LFF disk-to-tape backup server

The LFF chassis plus an internal LTO drive keeps disk and tape copies in one tower. Tape takes Box 1, so two 4LFF boxes remain — eight 24 TB SAS drives, 192 TB raw. A 12-core Silver 4410Y is ample for backup software, the tertiary riser powers the tape drive without a second processor, and a 16-port MR216i-o leaves ports for the drives and the tape.

  • 1 × Xeon Silver 4410Y12 cores @ 2 GHz, 150 W
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 256 GB (4000 MT/s with this processor)
  • 4 × 24 TB 3.5-inch SAS HDD in one 4LFF box — 96 TB raw as linked
  • MR216i-o 16-port controller in Slot 14 (OCP 1)
  • Broadcom BCM57416 2 × 10GbE BASE-T OCP3
  • 2 × 800 W Flex Slot Platinum
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard

Add the second 4LFF box, the internal LTO drive, the tertiary riser (P49693-B21), the LTO support kit (P62309-B21) and the Second CPU Fan Kit the riser requires on the quote. With tape in Box 1 the server holds eight LFF drives, not twelve.

GPU inference

Four-L4 GPU tower

Four 24 GB L4 cards add 96 GB of GPU memory at 72 W each, and HPE supports them at 30 °C inlet whatever the drive-box count. Two 32-core Gold 6448Y processors and 512 GB of DDR5 meet HPE’s advice that system memory be twice the GPU memory. Local NVMe holds models and data.

  • 2 × Xeon Gold 6448Y32 cores @ 2.1 GHz, 225 W each
  • 4 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • 4 × 3.84 TB NVMe U.3 in the tri-mode 8SFF box
  • MR408i-o 4 GB cache controller in Slot 14
  • Intel E810-XXVDA2 2 × 10/25GbE OCP3
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 V AC)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Four x16 cards need both 2x16 risers (primary FIO and secondary), and the L4 requires the External GPU Fan Kit, which covers those risers’ rear connectors. Both system fan kits are mandatory with any GPU. The Gold 6448Y appears only in HPE’s standard-features processor table, with no separate option kit, so confirm it on the quote.

All-flash database

Twelve-drive E3.S database tower

Twelve 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe drives in the 12EDSFF cage give 92.16 TB raw, mirrored by VROC NVMe without a controller. Two 16-core Gold 6526Y processors satisfy the cage’s two-processor rule while keeping the core count modest, and 1 TB of DDR5 sits behind them.

  • 2 × Xeon Gold 6526Y16 cores @ 2.8 GHz, 195 W each
  • 12 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe — 92.16 TB raw
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 1 TB (runs at 5200 MT/s)
  • Intel VROC NVMe (RAID licence on the quote)
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Intel E810-CQDA2 2 × 100GbE OCP3
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 V AC)
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

The 12EDSFF cage is factory-fitted, direct-attach only (cable kit P48400-B21) and rules out every other drive cage. It holds the inlet to 25 °C, and its bundled rear fan covers the primary riser, so no external cables can reach that riser.

12 — FAQ

ML350 Gen11 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11?

HPE prints 8.0 TB: all 32 slots with 256 GB RDIMMs at 4400 MT/s, two per channel. However, the memory options it lists stop at 128 GB, which works out at 4 TB across the same 32 slots. A single-processor server can populate only 16 slots, so half of either figure.

Which processors does the ML350 Gen11 take?

One or two 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors of the same model. HPE’s tables list 57 of them, 8-core to 64-core, rated between 125 W and 350 W. A 4th Gen server can’t be field-upgraded to 5th Gen parts, and seven SKUs are for single-socket builds only.

How many drives does the ML350 Gen11 hold?

Up to 24 SFF drives in three tri-mode 8SFF boxes, or 12 LFF drives in three 4LFF boxes; the LFF chassis can mix the two box types. The alternative factory cages hold 8 x4 NVMe SFF or 12 E3.S drives, and each has to be the only cage in the server.

Can the ML350 Gen11 be mounted in a rack?

Yes. The Tower-to-Rack Conversion Kit (P47394-B21) adds a 1U section, 69.2 cm deep or 83.5 cm with the cable-management arm, so the racked server takes 5U. The kit isn’t installed at the factory and ships as a separate item.

Which GPUs does the ML350 Gen11 support?

Five NVIDIA models, one type per server: up to eight RTX A1000, four L40, A16 or L4, or two L40S. Each needs both extra fan kits. Supported inlet temperature drops with more drive boxes — for the L40, from 27 °C with one box to 23 °C with three, or 30 °C in HPE’s limited two-GPU configuration.

How loud is the ML350 Gen11?

HPE’s declaration for five standard configurations gives sound power of 3.9 to 4.1 B at idle and 4.1 to 4.2 B operating, or 25 to 26 dBA at the bystander position. Extra options can raise those figures; HPE notes the fans may run faster with GPUs and with the 12EDSFF cage.

Which power supplies can the ML350 Gen11 use?

A maximum of two Flex Slot hot-plug units, matched: the Platinum 500 W, 800 W or 1600 W, the Titanium 1000 W or 1800–2200 W, or the −48 V DC 1600 W. HPE restricts the 500 W unit to builds with one 125 W processor, and the two largest AC units run only on 200–240 V.

How big and heavy is the ML350 Gen11?

As a tower it measures 46.2 cm high, 17.4 cm wide and 71.2 cm deep; racked, the system itself is 17.4 × 44.5 × 64.8 cm. HPE quotes 24.73 kg for a minimal SFF build and up to 43.05 kg for a fully loaded LFF build.

What changed from the ML350 Gen11 to the ML350 Gen12?

According to the two QuickSpecs, Gen12 moves to Xeon 6 P-core processors — up to 86 cores, 88 PCIe lanes and 24 GT/s UPI, against 64 cores, 80 lanes and 16 GT/s — plus iLO 7 and DDR5-6400, with 8.0 TB running at 5200 MT/s rather than 4400. It swaps the LFF and SFF chassis for one chassis with no default cage, and lets the 12-bay E3.S cage share the front with SFF or LFF boxes.

Is the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 end of life?

Version 47 of HPE’s QuickSpecs (8 September 2026) still offers both CTO chassis and gives no end-of-sale or end-of-support date; the retirements it records are individual option SKUs. Standard cover runs three years for parts, labour and on-site visits, next business day, and HPE’s dates will appear in our end-of-life checker when announced.
