HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11Specifications, configurations & comparisons

The ProLiant DL380 Gen11 is HPE’s two-socket 2U rack server built on 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable and managed through iLO 6. This data sheet sets out what its QuickSpecs allow — five chassis types, a mid-tray that lifts SAS capacity to 36 drives, embedded SATA RAID — and the cooling, riser and cage rules that decide which processor, GPU and drive combinations can be ordered.

01 — Overview

The DL380 Gen11 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL380 Gen11 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Five factory chassis — 8SFF, 24SFF, 8LFF, 12LFF and 12EDSFF — plus mid-tray and rear cages, so one model spans small SFF builds, 16 LFF bays and 36 EDSFF NVMe drives.
  • An optional 8SFF mid-tray takes SAS configurations to 36 drives (24 front, 8 mid, 4 rear); the DL380 Gen12 QuickSpecs tops out at 30 SFF bays.
  • The Intel C741 chipset keeps embedded SATA: Intel VROC SATA runs RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 across up to 14 bays with no add-in controller.
  • Both processor generations share the chassis — 37 4th Gen parts, including the HBM-equipped Platinum 9462, and 29 5th Gen parts up to the 64-core 8592+ and the 385 W 8593Q.
  • Eight full-height slots on three risers, all PCIe 5.0 apart from slot 8 on the default tertiary riser.

Watch-outs

  • 5th Gen Xeon needs a new server order: its firmware will not run on a system board shipped with 4th Gen, and HPE supports no field upgrade between the two.
  • Only 58 of the 66 processors in HPE’s feature tables have option kits; the 8470Q, 8468V, 6454S, 6414U, 6458Q, 6438N, 5420+ and 3408U appear in the tables alone.
  • The 8 TB maximum (32 × 256 GB) applies to 8SFF and 16SFF layouts; 24SFF builds stop at 16 DIMMs, and 256 GB DIMMs limit the front to two drive cages.
  • GPU rules are tight: no mixing of models, no L40S on the primary riser, no full-length card alongside a mid-tray, and several cage counts cut or rule out the L40S.
  • The 385 W 8593Q is a two-processor-only part that needs the Max Performance heat sink or direct liquid cooling; without DLC, rear cages cannot hold drives above 11 W.

  • Processors above 150 W take the High-performance heat sink and Q-series parts the Max Performance heat sink; above 205 W the High-performance fan kit is required as well.
  • Two different processor models cannot be mixed, and every processor supports up to 4 TB of memory.
  • The 8581V, 8558U and Bronze 3508U (5th Gen) and the Gold 6414U (4th Gen) are single-socket parts.
  • A one-socket build with a 300 W processor can be air-cooled with Performance heat sinks and fans, but cannot later be upgraded to two sockets on air.
  • HPE’s kit name and feature table disagree on the Gold 6548N — 250 W in the option kit, 300 W in the table; the page uses the kit value.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots — sixteen per processor on eight channels, two DIMMs per channel. Which kits fit depends on the processor generation: DDR5-4800 kits are for 4th Gen builds, while 5th Gen processors use the DDR5-5600 kits, from 16 GB to the 256 GB 3DS part.

  • The DDR5-4800 kits are for 4th Gen processors only; HPE rates them at 4800 MT/s when a channel holds one DIMM and 4400 MT/s when it holds two, and each processor’s own DDR5 rating sets the ceiling.
  • DIMMs are installed in even numbers; x4 and x8 parts cannot be mixed, nor 3DS with non-3DS, and Memory Fault Tolerance accepts x4 DIMMs only.
  • 96 GB DIMMs must be the only size in the server and are not supported on the Edge Enhanced LCC die. HPE’s two population notes for them differ: 8 or 16 per processor in one, 1, 6, 8, 12 or 16 in the other.
  • Capacities above 96 GB need the High-performance fan kit and carry an ambient-temperature limit; 256 GB DIMMs also cap the front at two drive cages.
  • The 8 TB ceiling (32 × 256 GB at 4800 MT/s) applies to 8SFF and 16SFF builds; a 24SFF server takes at most 16 DIMMs.
  • HPE’s kit list holds registered DIMMs and 3DS RDIMMs only; memory protection is Advanced ECC.
04 — Storage

13 drive-cage kits, up to 36 bays

HPE builds DL380 Gen11 storage from drive-cage kits: up to three front boxes, an optional mid-tray, and rear cages that take the place of riser slots. The layouts below are the complete configurations HPE’s chassis and storage notes describe; the chart after them lists every individual kit.

  • HPE MR408i-o Gen11 x8 Lanes 4GB Cache OCP SPDM Storage Controller — RAID, 4GB cache. Tri-Mode, OCP (OROC); needs battery or hybrid capacitor.
  • HPE SR932i-p Gen11 x32 Lanes 8GB Wide Cache PCI SPDM Plug-in Storage Controller — RAID, 8GB cache. Tri-Mode, PCIe; requires x16 physical and electrical riser slot; a second controller requires the secondary riser.
  • HPE Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 (8 External Lanes/No Cache) 12G SAS PCIe Plug-in Controller — RAID. Essential RAID, external SAS; CBE with remote key management and OBSE not supported on Gen11.
  • HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 NS204i-u FIO Bundle Kit (P54542-B21) - only when externally accessible hot-plug drives are required — boot
  • The embedded controller provides 14 SATA ports (12 reachable) for Intel VROC SATA, which offers RAID levels 0, 1, 5 and 10 in UEFI mode only and ships switched off.
  • Intel VROC NVMe uses four x8 PCIe 5.0 connectors per processor for directly attached NVMe on SFF models; RAID needs the Standard (0/1/10) or Premium (0/1/5/10) licence, and PCIe NVMe cards are not covered.
  • Tri-mode MegaRAID options are the MR216i-p/-o, MR416i-p/-o and MR408i-o, plus the SR932i-p, which needs a slot that is x16 both physically and electrically. Controllers with cache must be paired with a Smart Storage battery or hybrid capacitor, and PE80xx NVMe drives are not supported.
  • Without a controller, the 8SFF x1 cage direct-attaches SATA drives only (through the motherboard ports) and the x4 Premium cage NVMe drives only.
  • Mid-tray cages need the P48905-B21 heat sink and processors of 205 W or less, and no full-length PCIe card can be fitted with them.
  • The 4LFF mid-tray reaches 16 LFF drives with a storage controller, or 14 SATA drives when wired to the motherboard.
  • Boot is the NS204i-u NVMe device — the Gen11 unit or the 960 GB v2 and 960 GB SED v2 versions — internal by default, or reachable from outside with the FIO bundle kit.
  • An 8LFF chassis cannot be converted to 12LFF in the field.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Accelerators sit in the PCIe risers. HPE’s option list names four cards — the double-wide L40S, the L40, the L4 and the A16 — and its GPU thermal table adds the H100, H100 NVL, Intel Data Center GPU Max 1100 and RTX 4000 Ada, each with a maximum count per chassis and cooling type. Up to 8 × NVIDIA L4, or up to 3 × L40S, L40 or A16 — fewer with more drive cages or without liquid cooling.

  • Slot 8 on the default tertiary riser is PCIe 4.0 x16; the x8 enablement kit (P53632-B21) turns it into a PCIe 5.0 x8 slot.
  • Enabling slot 1 or slot 4 on the 3 × x16 risers takes the matching cable kit — P56073-B21 for the primary, P56074-B21 for the secondary.
  • OCP 1 takes priority for OCP storage controllers; OCP 2 carries the shared-NIC and Wake-on-LAN functions and takes priority for network cards.
  • There is no embedded LOM: every order needs an OCP 3.0 or stand-up network adapter.
  • A 2LFF rear cage in the primary or secondary position uses every slot on that riser.
  • The NDR and NDR200 InfiniBand adapters need a full x16 slot, the OCP2 x16 kit and the High-performance fan kit, keep ambient to 25 °C, exclude 256 GB DIMMs and are not supported on the 24SFF or 12LFF chassis.

  • The 800 W Platinum and 1000 W Titanium accept anything from 100 to 240 VAC, whereas the bigger Platinum and Titanium units are high-line parts for 200–240 VAC.
  • The 1800–2200 W supply is rated 1800 W at 200 VAC rising to 2200 W at 240 VAC; HPE’s steady-state table gives the 1000 W Titanium 1097 W at 100 VAC.
  • For ErP Lot 9 markets, the UK included, HPE names P03178-B21 (1000 W) and P44712-B21 (1800–2200 W) among its 96 %-efficient single-output supplies.
  • HPE’s electrical tables also print ratings for an 800 W Titanium and an 800 W 200–277 VAC “Universal” supply that do not appear in the orderable list.

08 — Compare

How the DL380 Gen11 compares with its family

The DL380 Gen11 sits at the centre of HPE’s Gen11 Intel rack line. The DL360 Gen11 is its 1U counterpart, the DL380a Gen11 gives up drive bays for GPU density, the DL385 Gen11 is the AMD EPYC 2U, the DL560 Gen11 scales to four sockets, and the DL380 Gen12 moves the design to Xeon 6. Each bar is drawn from that model’s verified spec file.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the DL380 Gen11

Four DL380 Gen11 builds made only from parts our configurator accepts for this model. Each opens pre-filled; before quoting we check it against HPE’s cooling, riser and cage rules, which the configurator does not model in full.

Virtualisation

120-core 5th Gen VM host

Two 60-core Platinum 8580 processors give 120 cores, and sixteen 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMMs — one per channel — hold 1 TB. Eight U.3 NVMe drives in a single cage carry the datastore under Intel VROC Premium, while the NS204i-u boot device keeps the hypervisor off the datastore drives.

  • 2 × Xeon Platinum 858060 cores @ 2 GHz, 350 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 1 TB, one per channel
  • 8 × 3.84 TB NVMe U.3 in one 8SFF cage
  • Intel VROC Premium (RAID 0/1/5/10) for the NVMe drives
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57504 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 VAC)
  • VMware vSphere 8 Essentials Plus

The 350 W 8580 needs the High-performance heat sink (or a DLC module) and the High-performance fan kit. VROC NVMe runs in UEFI mode only.

Databases

Per-core-licensed SQL Server

Thirty-two fast cores across two 16-core, 3.6 GHz Gold 6544Y processors keep per-core database licensing down, while 1 TB of DDR5-5600 and eight 7.68 TB NVMe drives behind an MR416i-p with 8 GB of cache give the data files hardware RAID.

  • 2 × Xeon Gold 6544Y16 cores @ 3.6 GHz, 270 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 1 TB
  • 8 × 7.68 TB NVMe U.3 on an MR416i-p (8 GB cache)
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

The 270 W 6544Y needs the High-performance heat sink or a DLC module plus the High-performance fan kit. The MR416i-p needs a Smart Storage battery or hybrid capacitor and the P48918-B21 cable kit.

Backup & archive

LFF backup repository

Backup repositories need raw capacity more than speed, and the DL380 Gen11 takes 3.5-inch SAS drives in front boxes, a mid-tray and rear cages behind one cached tri-mode controller. Sixteen-core Silver 4514Y processors at 150 W stay inside the 205 W limit that a mid-tray imposes.

  • 2 × Xeon Silver 4514Y16 cores @ 2 GHz, 150 W each
  • 10 × 24 TB 3.5-inch SAS HDD — 240 TB raw as linked
  • One 4LFF front box, the 4LFF mid-tray and a 2LFF rear cage
  • MR416i-p tri-mode controller, 8 GB cache
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

The link opens with one front LFF box; the 12LFF chassis has three, and HPE’s overview and mid-tray notes put the LFF limit at 16 drives. The mid-tray needs the P48905-B21 heat sink, and a 2LFF rear cage takes every slot on its riser.

AI inference

Two-GPU L40S inference server

A pair of 48 GB NVIDIA L40S cards occupies the secondary and tertiary risers, as HPE requires for two, with 512 GB of DDR5 — far above the twice-the-GPU-memory HPE recommends — and a 100GbE OCP uplink for model and data traffic.

  • 2 × Xeon Gold 6542Y24 cores @ 2.9 GHz, 250 W each
  • 2 × NVIDIA L40S 48 GB
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • 4 × 3.84 TB NVMe U.3 in one 8SFF cage
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57608 2 × 100GbE QSFP112 OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1800–2200 W Flex Slot Titanium (200–240 VAC)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

HPE allows at most two L40S on an 8SFF server with one front cage, never on the primary riser; a pair needs both secondary and tertiary risers and the High-performance fan kit. Full-length GPUs exclude the mid-tray and need the High-performance heat sink or DLC.

DL380 Gen11 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11?

Its 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots reach 8.0 TB with 256 GB DIMMs at 4800 MT/s, but only in 8SFF or 16SFF layouts; a 24SFF server is limited to 16 DIMMs. 256 GB DIMMs also limit the front to two drive cages and need the High-performance fan kit. Each processor supports up to 4 TB.

Which processors does the DL380 Gen11 support?

4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable. HPE’s feature tables list 66 — 37 4th Gen and 29 5th Gen — with 8 to 64 cores and TDPs of 125–385 W, and 58 of them have option kits. A server ordered with 4th Gen cannot be upgraded to 5th Gen in the field, because the newer processors need a system board shipped with 5th Gen firmware.

How many drive bays does the DL380 Gen11 have?

Up to 36, reached two ways: 36 E3.S NVMe drives in the 12EDSFF chassis, or 36 SAS drives from 24 front, 8 mid-tray and 4 rear SFF bays. The 24SFF chassis with every rear option gives 30 SFF bays. For LFF, HPE’s overview and mid-tray notes set a 16-drive limit, although its maximum-storage table prints a 12 + 4 + 4 layout.

How many GPUs can the DL380 Gen11 take?

Up to eight NVIDIA L4 cards, or up to three L40S, L40 or A16. The limits fall as drive cages are added or when direct liquid cooling is absent — an 8SFF server with one front cage takes at most two L40S, for example — and GPU models cannot be mixed.

How many PCIe slots does the DL380 Gen11 have?

Up to eight full-height slots on three risers. Slots 1 to 7 are PCIe 5.0; slot 8 on the default tertiary riser is PCIe 4.0 x16, or PCIe 5.0 x8 with HPE’s enablement kit. Risers two and three depend on the second processor, and two OCP 3.0 slots come on top.

Which power supplies does the DL380 Gen11 use?

One or two matching Flex Slot hot-plug supplies. The AC choices, largest first, are 1800–2200 W Titanium, 1600 W Platinum, 1000 W Titanium and 800 W Platinum, and there is a 1600 W −48 V DC model. The two smaller AC units also run from 100 V; the larger two need 200–240 V.

How big and heavy is the DL380 Gen11?

It is 8.75 cm high and 44.8 cm wide, and 72.7 cm deep in SFF form or 73.25 cm with LFF bays. HPE gives a maximum of 33 kg for an 8SFF build and 37 kg for a 12LFF build.

Can the DL380 Gen11 run RAID without a RAID card?

Yes. The embedded Intel VROC SATA controller provides RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 on up to 14 bays, in UEFI mode and once enabled. Intel VROC NVMe adds software RAID for NVMe drives wired to the processors on SFF models, with a Standard or Premium licence.

What changed between the DL380 Gen11 and the DL380 Gen12?

Going by the two QuickSpecs, the Gen12 moves to Intel Xeon 6 with up to 144 E-cores or 86 P-cores per processor, DDR5-6400 RDIMMs, iLO 7 and PCIe 5.0 on all eight slots, and lists the H200 NVL and RTX PRO 6000 cards, which run under a 450 W power cap. The Gen11 keeps iLO 6 and embedded VROC SATA RAID, which the Gen12 document does not list, and its 8SFF mid-tray allows 36 SAS drives against a Gen12 SFF maximum of 30.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 end of life?

HPE’s QuickSpecs (version 47, 8 September 2026) still lists orderable configure-to-order models and gives no end-of-life or end-of-service date for the server; the obsolete SKUs in its change log are individual options. The standard warranty covers parts, labour and on-site service for three years; if HPE later publishes support end dates, our end-of-life checker will show them.
