01 — Overview

The DL380 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL380 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Two Xeon 6 core types in one chassis: seven E-core parts of 64 to 144 cores for dense throughput, and 27 P-core parts of 8 to 86 cores for per-core speed.
  • DDR5 runs at 6400 MT/s on a single DIMM per channel and still at 6000 MT/s on two, so a fully populated 8 TB server keeps a high memory speed.
  • All eight rear slots are PCIe 5.0, a second OCP 3.0 slot can be cabled in at x8 or x16, and SFF or EDSFF chassis can move OCP NICs to the front.
  • Seven accelerators are listed, from eight single-wide L4 or RTX A1000 cards up to two H200 NVL or three RTX PRO 6000 running at a 450 W cap.
  • LFF capacity reaches 20 drives — 12 front, a 4LFF midplane and 4 rear — and the EDSFF chassis holds 36 E3.S NVMe drives.

Watch-outs

  • GPUs and rear drive cages cannot be combined, and GPU models cannot be mixed.
  • The H200 NVL, RTX PRO 6000 and RTX PRO 6000D need the Cooling Upgrade Enablement Kit and the 1U High Performance heat sink; with the kit, processors are held to 270 W at 30 °C or 350 W at 27 °C, and those three GPUs to 27 °C ambient.
  • The 4LFF midplane cage accepts processors of 225 W or less only, and cannot be combined with direct liquid cooling.
  • The 36-drive EDSFF direct-attach bundle gives up every riser slot and runs both OCP slots at x8.
  • HPE’s two processor listings disagree on the 6714P: 165 W in the option kit, 195 W in the feature table.

  • The two processors must be the same model.
  • The Standard heat sink covers processors up to 185 W; the Max Performance heat sink is for two-processor builds only, heat-sink types cannot be mixed, and HPE’s configurator picks the heat sink from the processor and thermal needs.
  • The 6731E is shown with no UPI links (UPI = 0) in HPE’s processor table.
  • The 8-core, 2.8 GHz, 135 W Xeon 6503P was added in version 19 of the QuickSpecs.
  • Direct liquid cooling uses cold-plate modules in an NS204i-u or a PCIe position, cannot be mixed with air-cooled heat sinks, and iLO 7 raises leak alerts and can shut the server down.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots — sixteen per processor across eight channels, two DIMMs per channel. Xeon 6 tops out at 6400 MT/s when each channel holds a single DIMM; a second DIMM per channel brings that to 6000 MT/s, which is the speed of the 8 TB maximum (32 × 256 GB).

  • * Each processor’s own DDR5 rating caps the speed: HPE lists the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E at 5600 MT/s.
  • The 16 GB DIMM is supported with one DIMM per channel only.
  • Every kit is a DDR5-6400 RDIMM, from 16 GB to 128 GB, plus a 256 GB 3DS RDIMM; MRDIMMs are not in the option list.
  • Advanced ECC, ADDDC (enabled by default, with a possible performance cost under some workloads) and memory mirroring are available.
  • The -B21 kits are for separate orders; factory-integrated builds use the matching -F21 SKUs.
04 — Storage

13 drive-cage kits, up to 36 bays

Five configure-to-order chassis set the front: SFF (up to 24 bays, or media-bay and multipurpose-cage options), 24SFF, 8LFF, 12LFF and EDSFF. Rear cages replace riser positions, and LFF chassis can add a 4LFF midplane. The layouts are HPE’s complete maximums; the kit chart lists each cage.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

GPUs install in the rear risers, each double-wide card taking two slots. HPE supports the H200 NVL, RTX PRO 6000 and RTX PRO 6000D only with their power capped at 450 W, and the H200 NVL’s cap needs iLO Advanced with Advanced Power Management enabled. Up to 8 × single-wide L4 or RTX A1000, 5 × RTX PRO 4500, 3 × double-wide L40S, RTX PRO 6000 or 6000D, or 2 × H200 NVL.

  • The 3 × x16 secondary riser and the tertiary riser cannot be fitted together.
  • Slot 1 on the 3 × x16 primary riser, and slot 4 on the 3 × x16 secondary, stay disabled until two P76471-B21 cable kits and a trigger SKU are ordered; some direct-attach bundles run that slot at x8.
  • OCP A is embedded at x8 and reaches x16 with the P72201-B21 cable kit; OCP B is cabled from either processor. With two processors both OCP slots can run at x16.
  • Front and rear OCP slots cannot be active at the same time, and OCP A carries the shared-NIC (NC-SI) function.
  • There is no embedded network controller — an OCP 3.0 or stand-up NIC is part of every order.
  • NVIDIA BlueField B3220 and B3140H DPUs were added in version 19; the B3220 also needs the Cooling Upgrade Enablement Kit.

5 power supplies, 800–2,200 W

Power supplies are HPE Flex Slot hot-plug units, five models in all. AC input comes through the 800 W or 1600 W Platinum and the 1000 W or 1800–2200 W Titanium; DC sites use the 1600 W −48 V model, ordered with HPE’s lug kit or DC power cable kit. A server never mixes two different models.

  • In HPE’s acoustic declarations the entry SFF build (one 6507P, one 800 W supply, four standard fans) measured 4.2 B idle, and the dense LFF build 6.0 B operating.
  • The Cooling Upgrade Enablement Kit adds six fans and air baffles, either to run double-wide GPUs at higher ambient temperatures or to carry more drives at the same temperature.

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12?

It holds 8.0 TB: all 32 slots filled with 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, running at 6000 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel. With one DIMM per channel Xeon 6 runs DDR5 at 6400 MT/s, subject to each processor’s own rating, and the 16 GB DIMM is limited to one per channel.

Which processors does the DL380 Gen12 support?

Up to two Intel Xeon 6 processors of the same model. HPE lists seven E-core parts of 64 to 144 cores and 27 P-core parts of 8 to 86 cores, from 135 W to 350 W; the 8-core 6503P arrived in the latest revision.

How many drives does the DL380 Gen12 hold?

Up to 36 E3.S NVMe drives in the EDSFF chassis, 30 SFF drives (24 front, 6 rear) or 20 LFF drives (12 front, 4 midplane, 4 rear). The EDSFF chassis can instead mix 12 E3.S with up to 16 SFF drives at the front.

How many GPUs can the DL380 Gen12 take?

Up to eight single-wide L4 or RTX A1000, five RTX PRO 4500, three double-wide L40S, RTX PRO 6000 or RTX PRO 6000D, or two H200 NVL. The H200 NVL and both RTX PRO 6000 models run at a 450 W cap with the Cooling Upgrade kit, models cannot be mixed, and no GPU can share the server with rear drives.

How many PCIe slots does the DL380 Gen12 have?

Eight rear PCIe 5.0 slots — up to six at x16 and two at x8 — on primary, secondary and tertiary risers, plus two OCP 3.0 slots. A second processor is needed for risers two and three, and choosing the 3 × x16 secondary riser rules out the tertiary one.

Which power supplies are available for the DL380 Gen12?

There are five Flex Slot hot-plug choices — 1000 W and 1800–2200 W Titanium, 800 W and 1600 W Platinum, and a 1600 W −48 V DC unit — and two different models cannot be mixed. The 1600 W Platinum is high-line only, and neither Platinum unit is allowed in an Energy Star 4.0 configuration.

How big and heavy is the DL380 Gen12?

It is 8.75 cm high, 44.80 cm wide and 72.70 cm deep in SFF and EDSFF form, or 73.25 cm deep with LFF bays, measured without the power supplies. HPE gives 18 to 33 kg for SFF builds and 23 to 37 kg for LFF builds.

Should I choose E-core or P-core Xeon 6 for the DL380 Gen12?

The seven 6700E E-core parts offer 64 to 144 cores at 205 W to 330 W with base clocks of 1.8 to 2.4 GHz, which suits container, web and scale-out work where thread count matters. The 27 P-core parts have 8 to 86 cores and base clocks up to 4.0 GHz, on the 8-core 6714P. HPE rates the E-cores at 5600 or 6400 MT/s memory and every P-core part at 6400 MT/s.

What changed from the DL380 Gen11 to the DL380 Gen12?

By the two QuickSpecs, the Gen12 replaces 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable with Xeon 6, iLO 6 with iLO 7 and the Gen11’s DDR5-4800 and DDR5-5600 kits with DDR5-6400, and runs tertiary slot 8 at PCIe 5.0 where the Gen11’s default riser has it at PCIe 4.0 x16. It adds 450 W-capped double-wide GPUs and gives 20 LFF drives as its limit, where the Gen11 overview says 16, but lists no SFF mid-tray, so its SFF maximum is 30 against the Gen11’s 36 SAS drives.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12 end of life?

No. HPE’s QuickSpecs (version 19, 8 September 2026) lists current configure-to-order models and states no end-of-life or end-of-service date — the SKUs it marks obsolete are options such as drives and adapters. The server carries a three-year parts, labour and on-site warranty; should HPE announce end-of-sale or end-of-support dates, our end-of-life checker will list them.
