HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12Specifications, configurations & comparisons

The ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 is HPE’s 1U two-socket server for Intel Xeon 6, with front storage of up to 20 E3.S, 10 SFF or 4 LFF drives. This data sheet shows what the 1U format costs — three PCIe slots, a thermal table that limits air-cooled processors above 250 W, and front boxes shared between drives, boot devices and OCP cards.

01 — Overview

The DL360 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL360 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Twenty E3.S NVMe bays in 1U — five front boxes that each take four E3.S or two U.3 SFF drives, and can be mixed.
  • Up to 8 TB of DDR5 across 32 slots, at 6400 MT/s when each channel holds one DIMM and, for 6500P and 6700P parts from May 2026, 6000 MT/s when it holds two.
  • Each processor brings 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes and four x8 connectors for direct-attached NVMe; across the server they surface as three x16 slots and two rear OCP 3.0 slots.
  • Factory closed-loop liquid cooling or rack-level DLC, both watched by iLO 7 leak detection that shuts the server down; on the closed-loop module it also blocks power-on until the leak is cleared.
  • On the hybrid chassis the NS204i-u boot device and OCP NICs can sit at the front, beside a front USB-C iLO service port.

Watch-outs

  • On air, processors of 251–350 W are only a “Limited Configuration” in HPE’s thermal table. DLC is fully supported to 350 W, closed-loop cooling from 271 W to 350 W (and to 270 W on one-processor builds), and the 6725P and 6732P require liquid cooling in every case.
  • Two-processor builds of 271–350 W on closed-loop cooling are held to 25 °C inlet air, against 30 °C for builds up to 270 W.
  • Only three PCIe slots: a full-height card in slot 3 removes the low-profile slot 2 bracket, and the rear NS204i-u kit also occupies slot 2.
  • Front options use drive boxes: a front NS204i-u or the front OCP kits each cut the drive boxes to four, and both together to three.
  • Xeon 6 has no PCH and no SATA signal, so SAS and SATA drives always need a hardware controller; Intel VROC for Windows on Xeon 6 is temporarily unavailable.

  • Standard heat sink and fans cover processors up to 185 W, and the Performance heat sink and fans 186–250 W; 251–350 W on air is a Limited Configuration.
  • The 6725P and 6732P are low T-case parts that must use closed-loop liquid cooling or DLC — the 6725P despite a 235 W rating.
  • The closed-loop liquid-cooling bundle (P74800-B21) is a factory-install option, and HPE advises swapping the module at five-year intervals.
  • For the 6731E, HPE’s processor table lists a UPI count of zero.
  • Fan kits hold five fans for one processor and seven for two.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

The DL360 Gen12 takes low-profile, single-wide GPUs of up to 75 W, and HPE lists one: the NVIDIA L4 24 GB, in slots 1, 2 and 3 — slot 3 needs the second processor. GPU builds need high-performance fans on air and the Increased Cooling BIOS setting, and HPE advises fitting system memory at least double the combined GPU memory. Up to 3 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB — low-profile, single-wide, within HPE’s 75 W GPU maximum.

  • OCP A is embedded at x8 from processor 1 and reaches x16 with a cable kit; OCP B is cabled at x8 from either processor, or x16 from processor 2.
  • The server takes two OCP cards in total — network adapters and OCP storage controllers, front and rear combined.
  • The front OCP kits work through interposers in the rear OCP slots, only the front primary bay carries NC-SI, and HPE listed them as unavailable until CQ4 2025.
  • Every slot supports Wake-on-LAN; slot 2’s connector faces the opposite way, so port numbering on a card fitted there is reversed.
  • There is no embedded LOM: HPE’s configurator defaults to a Broadcom BCM5719 4-port 1GbE OCP adapter, which can be swapped for another card.
06 — Power & cooling

5 power supplies, 800–2,200 W

Power comes from HPE Flex Slot hot-plug supplies, configured with redundancy and never mixed. The 800 W Platinum and 1000 W Titanium take 100–240 VAC, the 1600 W Platinum and 1800–2200 W Titanium 200–240 VAC only, and the fifth option is a 1600 W −48 V DC unit.

  • Only the two Titanium units are listed as Energy Star 4.0 compliant; configurations with the 800 W or 1600 W Platinum supply, or with any GPU, fall outside Energy Star 4.0.
  • HPE’s technical specifications rate the −48 V unit for −40 to −72 V DC, although one options note describes it as high-line AC only.
  • At 200 VAC the 1800–2200 W supply delivers 1799 W, reaching 2200 W at 240 VAC.
  • P03178-B21 (1000 W) and P44712-B21 (1800–2200 W) are the 96 %-efficient units HPE names for ErP Lot 9 markets, the UK among them.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the DL360 Gen12

Four 1U builds, each limited to parts the configurator allows on the DL360 Gen12 and opened pre-filled. Heat sink, fan kit and liquid-cooling choices are not modelled there, so we confirm them against HPE’s thermal table before quoting.

Virtualisation

72-core 1U VM host on air

Two 36-core 6736P processors at 205 W sit in the fully supported air-cooled band, so 72 cores fit in 1U without liquid cooling. Sixteen 64 GB RDIMMs give 1 TB at 6400 MT/s, and the (8+2) chassis holds ten SAS SSDs behind an OCP RAID controller.

  • 2 × Xeon 6736P36 cores @ 2 GHz, 205 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB, one per channel
  • 10 × 3.84 TB SAS SSD: 8SFF x1 backplane plus the 2SFF pair
  • MR416i-o OCP RAID controller, 8 GB cache
  • NS204i-u v2 NVMe boot device
  • Intel E810-XXVDA2 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • VMware vSphere 8 Essentials Plus

The 8SFF backplane always needs a hardware controller, and an OCP controller plus an OCP NIC fill both of the server’s OCP positions. The rear NS204i-u kit takes PCIe slot 2.

Software-defined storage

E3.S NVMe storage node

E3.S is where the DL360 Gen12 stands out in 1U: each front box holds four drives, and HPE’s table goes up to twenty 61.44 TB drives. The linked build starts with one box of four, on 32-core 6530P processors, with a 100GbE OCP adapter for replication traffic.

  • 2 × Xeon 6530P32 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 225 W each
  • 4 × 61.44 TB E3.S NVMe — 245.76 TB raw in one box
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • NS204i-u v2 NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57608 2 × 100GbE QSFP112 OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Add boxes in the configurator for up to 20 drives; at 20, rear OCP A runs at x8. HPE requires the Performance heat sink or liquid cooling with 100GbE networking, and bars 256 GB DIMMs above 100GbE.

Video analytics

Three-L4 inference node

HPE names intelligent video analytics among the DL360 Gen12’s target workloads, and the L4 is the GPU it lists: three low-profile cards across slots 1 to 3 on two 24-core 6520P processors, with 512 GB of memory — far above twice the 72 GB of GPU memory, as HPE recommends.

  • 2 × Xeon 6520P24 cores @ 2.4 GHz, 210 W each
  • 3 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB, low-profile
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • 4 × 3.84 TB NVMe U.3 on the 8SFF backplane
  • MR408i-o OCP RAID controller, 4 GB cache
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 VAC)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Slot 3 needs the second processor and a secondary riser. GPU builds need Performance fans on air, the Increased Cooling BIOS setting and a Performance heat sink or liquid cooling, and cannot be Energy Star 4.0 configurations. For boot, use the internal NS204i-u kit — the rear kit takes slot 2.

Scale-out web

128-core E-core web tier

Two 64-core 6710E processors at 205 W give 128 E-cores in 1U within the Performance-heat-sink band, suiting web front ends and container nodes. E-core processors accept 32 to 128 GB DIMMs in counts of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 per socket, so eight 64 GB DIMMs per socket is a valid 1 TB population.

  • 2 × Xeon 6710E64 cores @ 2.4 GHz, 205 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB, 8 per socket
  • 2 × 960 GB SATA SSD on the 8SFF backplane
  • MR216i-o OCP controller, no cache
  • Intel E810-XXVDA4 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 800 W Flex Slot Platinum
  • No OS — bring your own

With no PCH, SATA drives always sit behind a hardware controller such as the MR216i-o. HPE rates the 6710E at 5600 MT/s, so memory runs below the DIMMs’ 6400 MT/s.

12 — FAQ

DL360 Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen12?

It takes 8.0 TB with 32 × 256 GB RDIMMs, which is 4 TB per processor. The 256 GB DIMMs are for P-core processors only, limited to 16 per processor and unable to reach 6400 MT/s; E-core processors top out at 128 GB DIMMs, or 4 TB with all 32 slots filled.

Which processors does the DL360 Gen12 support?

HPE lists 33 Intel Xeon 6 processors: seven E-core 6700E parts of 64 to 144 cores and 26 P-core parts with 8 to 86 cores, their TDPs running from 150 W up to 350 W. One or two can be fitted; above 250 W HPE’s thermal table calls for liquid cooling for full support.

How many drive bays does the DL360 Gen12 have?

At most 20 E3.S NVMe drives or 10 SFF drives in the hybrid chassis, eight plus two SFF in the (8+2) chassis, or four LFF drives. Front boot and OCP options take drive boxes, and HPE lists no rear or mid-chassis bays.

Does the DL360 Gen12 support GPUs?

Yes, up to three NVIDIA L4 24 GB cards — low-profile, single-wide and within HPE’s 75 W maximum for GPUs — in slots 1, 2 and 3, the third needing the second processor. The L4 is the only GPU HPE lists for this server.

How many PCIe slots does the DL360 Gen12 have?

Three PCIe 5.0 x16 slots: two on the standard butterfly riser, one full-height and one low-profile, and a third on an optional secondary riser that needs the second processor. Cards can be up to 9.5 inches long, and two rear OCP 3.0 slots come on top.

Does the DL360 Gen12 need liquid cooling?

Only for some processors. Air cooling is fully supported up to 250 W, with the Performance heat sink and fans from 186 W, except for the low T-case 6725P and 6732P, which need closed-loop liquid cooling or DLC in any build. From 251 W to 350 W air is only a Limited Configuration: DLC is fully supported across that range, and closed-loop cooling is too, apart from 251–270 W on two processors.

Which power supplies does the DL360 Gen12 use?

Four AC Flex Slot supplies — 800 W and 1600 W Platinum, 1000 W and 1800–2200 W Titanium — and a 1600 W −48 V DC unit, all hot-plug and not to be mixed. On 100–120 V circuits only the 800 W and 1000 W models apply, because the two larger AC units are high-line only.

How big and heavy is the DL360 Gen12?

It is 4.29 cm high and 43.46 cm wide, and 75.31 cm deep for the (8+2) SFF chassis or 77.31 cm for the 4LFF and hybrid chassis, excluding the front ears and PSU handle. HPE lists 14.87 kg for a minimal SFF build and 21.38 kg for a fully loaded EDSFF build.

How does the DL360 Gen12 differ from the DL380 Gen12?

Both use Xeon 6 with 32 DDR5 slots and 8 TB of memory. The 2U DL380 Gen12 has eight PCIe 5.0 slots, up to 36 E3.S, 30 SFF or 20 LFF drives and double-wide GPUs; the 1U DL360 Gen12 stops at three slots, 20 E3.S drives and three L4 cards.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen12 end of life?

No. HPE’s QuickSpecs (version 18, 3 August 2026) lists current configure-to-order models and gives no end-of-life date for the server; its latest change added OCP slotting rules. Cover under HPE’s standard warranty lasts three years, with on-site repair by the next business day, and our end-of-life checker will add any dates HPE announces.
