HPE ProLiant Compute DL340 Gen12Specifications, configurations & comparisons

The HPE ProLiant Compute DL340 Gen12 is a one-socket Intel Xeon 6 server in 2U that HPE builds on three configure-to-order chassis: SFF/EDSFF, 12-bay LFF and a longer Front GPU model. The chassis fixes the drive count, the accelerator options, the OCP layout and the rack depth, so this sheet works through each one; a FAQ covers how it differs from the DL340e.

01 — Overview

The DL340 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL340 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Three factory chassis on one single-socket platform: SFF for up to 24 × 2.5-inch or 36 × E3.S drives, LFF for 12 × 3.5-inch, and a Front GPU model that HPE documents with four double-wide accelerators.
  • Up to 4 TB of DDR5 across sixteen RDIMM slots using 256 GB 3DS modules, and eight DIMMs — one in each channel — keep HPE’s 6400 MT/s rating.
  • Up to four OCP 3.0 positions, each PCIe 5.0 x16: OCP A built in at the rear, OCP B optional beside it, and a pair of optional front slots on the SFF and GPU chassis.
  • The SFF, 24SFF and EDSFF chassis measure 63.95 cm deep and the 12LFF 65.61 cm; only the GPU chassis stretches to 83.71 cm.
  • A direct liquid cooling kit (P84592-B21) is on the option list, shipped only inside a complete 42U or 48U Enterprise G2 rack.

Watch-outs

  • The slot table lists just two CEM positions — Slot 3 on the primary riser and Slot 6 on the secondary, both optional PCIe 5.0 x16 FHHL — so most networking goes through OCP.
  • No network port is standard; every order needs an OCP 3.0 or stand-up adapter.
  • The GPU kits pull in opposite directions: the four-GPU front kit requires a Single Socket (6XX1P) processor, while the two-GPU kit is not supported with one.
  • The 6774P is sold for AI-server host duty only; HPE warns that general-compute use voids the warranty.
  • The high-performance fan kit becomes mandatory with nine or more DIMMs, any 256 GB DIMM, the GPU chassis or a NEBS build.

33 supported processors, mapped

Thirty-three Xeon 6 option kits are listed, from the 8-core, 135 W 6503P that Version 15 of the QuickSpecs added, up to two 144-core E-core parts, the 6766E and 6780E. A single socket leaves nothing to add later, so the processor you pick decides the core count, the ceiling on memory speed and, together with the chassis, the heat sink.

  • Six Single Socket (RICH I/O) processors — 6511P, 6521P, 6731P, 6741P, 6761P and 6781P — print zero UPI links. HPE ties 136 PCIe lanes to this group, and both the four-GPU kit and the rear captive riser require one.
  • Heat sinks follow chassis and TDP: the SFF chassis may use the standard heat sink to 250 W while it carries no more than two 8SFF kits or four 4EDSFF kits, and needs the high-performance heat sink above that; LFF, GPU and NEBS builds use the high-performance heat sink throughout, to 350 W.
  • The 6710E, 6731E and 6746E are printed at 5600 MT/s rather than 6400, and HCC and LCC die parts carry a delayed-availability warning.
  • The tables disagree three times: the 6515P’s base clock is 2.4 GHz in the feature table and 2.3 GHz on its option-kit line; the Mainline row for a 2.3 GHz, 225 W, 32-core part says “6730P” where kit P74571-B21 is the 6530P; and the 6732P is orderable yet has no Standard Features row.
03 — Memory

16 DDR5 DIMM slots

Sixteen RDIMM slots hang off the one processor — eight channels with two slots each. With one DIMM per channel HPE rates the memory at 6400 MT/s; filling both slots of every channel brings the rating to 5200 MT/s. The 4 TB maximum is sixteen 256 GB 3DS modules, so it is always a two-per-channel build.

  • Two triggers make the high-performance fan kit compulsory: a 256 GB module anywhere, or nine DIMMs or more.
  • Any processor on the list can address the full 4 TB, according to HPE, though the processor still caps memory speed.
  • Memory protection covers Advanced ECC, full mirroring and ADDDC, which HPE switches on by default and warns can slow certain workloads.
  • The -B21 memory numbers are for stand-alone orders; factory-fitted DIMMs use the matching -F21 part.

7 drive-cage kits, up to 36 bays

Drive capacity depends entirely on the chassis ordered. The SFF model ships with an 8SFF cage in Box 3 and grows to 24 × 2.5-inch, or to 36 E3.S with the EDSFF front cage; the LFF model starts from a 4LFF backplane and reaches 12 × 3.5-inch; the Front GPU model keeps Box 2 for 8 SFF or 12 E3.S drives. The NS204i-u boot device sits outside the data bays.

  • In the SFF chassis Slot 3 works only alongside one of four things: the 8SFF x4 direct-attach cabling, the 8SFF/EDSFF cable kit, the 36EDSFF x2 R1S direct-attach cable kit or an internal controller.
  • Other rear risers are alternatives: up to two captive riser kits (SFF and LFF chassis with a 6XX1P processor, not with an OCP B cable kit on SFF), or up to two NEBS-compliant risers that cannot be mixed with other risers and need the high-performance heat sink and six performance fans.
  • HPE’s base-model table marks the OCP 3.0 slot “Not supported” on the LFF CTO server, yet the same document describes OCP A as embedded and lists OCP slot B cable kits for the LFF chassis — confirm OCP networking before ordering an LFF build.
  • Management is an iLO 7 ASIC on the DC-SCM module (P76981-B21), with a dedicated 1 GbE port at the rear and a USB-C iLO service port at the front.
  • HPE attaches a high-performance fan kit requirement to its 100 Gb adapter groups, which also hold the 200 Gb Slingshot NIC and the 400 Gb InfiniBand card.

Four builds that suit the DL340 Gen12

Four starting points spread across the three chassis. Each link opens our HPE configurator with these parts already selected — all options it accepts for the DL340.

Hosting & IaaS

Single-socket cloud host

HPE’s overview names IaaS, PaaS and SaaS as the workloads it had in mind. A 64-core Mainline processor drives eight 96 GB DIMMs — one per channel, so the 6400 MT/s rating holds — and eight U.3 NVMe drives under VROC Premium hold the VM datastore.

  • 1 × Xeon 6760P64 cores @ 2.2 GHz, 330 W
  • 8 × 96 GB DDR5-6400 — 768 GB, one DIMM per channel
  • 8 × 7.68 TB U.3 NVMe in one 8SFF cage
  • Intel VROC Premium for NVMe RAID
  • NS204i-u v2 mirrored boot pair
  • Intel E810-XXVDA4 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1500 W M-CRPS Titanium

A 330 W processor in the SFF chassis needs the high-performance heat sink.

Databases

High-clock SQL host

Sixteen P-cores at 3.7 GHz base, backed by 192 MB of L3, suit databases licensed per core. The MR416i-p adds cached hardware RAID across U.3 NVMe, which HPE’s drive matrix supports for the MR400 series.

  • 1 × Xeon 6725P16 cores @ 3.7 GHz, 235 W
  • 8 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 — 512 GB
  • 8 × 3.84 TB U.3 NVMe
  • MR416i-p with 8 GB cache
  • NS204i-u v2 boot
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W M-CRPS Titanium

The MR416i-p must be ordered with a 96 W battery or a hybrid capacitor kit.

AI inference

Four-GPU front-accelerator build

The L40S is supported only in the Front GPU chassis, which HPE documents with four double-wide cards. The four-GPU kit demands a 6XX1P processor, so this build uses the 48-core 6741P, and a 100 GbE OCP adapter keeps networking off the rear slots.

  • 1 × Xeon 6741P48 cores @ 2.5 GHz, 300 W
  • 4 × NVIDIA L40S 48GB (Front GPU chassis)
  • 8 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 — 512 GB
  • 4 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe
  • Intel E810-CQDA2 2 × 100GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 3200 W M-CRPS Titanium

Needs the 83.71 cm Front GPU CTO chassis, the four-GPU enablement kit, the L40S power cable kit, performance fans and the high-performance heat sink; we check cooling and supply sizing when we quote.

DC power & NEBS

−48 V DC compute node

For sites that run on −48 V DC, HPE lists 1300 W and 2200 W DC supplies and a NEBS-compliant riser kit. A 24-core RICH I/O part at 225 W keeps the draw modest, and the 63.95 cm SFF chassis is the shortest DL340.

  • 1 × Xeon 6521P24 cores @ 2.6 GHz, 225 W
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 — 256 GB
  • 4 × 1.92 TB U.3 NVMe under VROC
  • NS204i-u v2 boot
  • Broadcom BCM57504 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1300 W −48 V DC M-CRPS

A NEBS build needs HPE’s NEBS riser (not mixed with other risers), the high-performance heat sink and six performance fans, and the DC supplies need a −48 V cord or lug kit — we add these at quote.

12 — FAQ

DL340 Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12?

4 TB, which means filling all sixteen RDIMM slots with 256 GB 3DS modules — two per channel, so 5200 MT/s. With one DIMM in each of the eight channels the memory runs at 6400 MT/s instead. Any 256 GB module, or nine DIMMs or more, requires the high-performance fan kit.

What is the difference between the DL340 Gen12 and the DL340e Gen12?

HPE builds the DL340 on three chassis — SFF/EDSFF, 12LFF and Front GPU — with a 4 TB memory ceiling and L4 or L40S accelerators. The DL340e has a single storage-optimised LFF chassis taking 16 or 24 front 3.5-inch drives, a rear choice of E3.S flash or up to six PCIe slots, and a 2 TB limit. It is also 80.65 cm deep, where the DL340 SFF chassis is 63.95 cm.

Which processors does the DL340 Gen12 support?

Thirty-three Intel Xeon 6 option kits, from the 8-core 6503P at 135 W to the 144-core 6766E and 6780E, with 350 W the highest TDP. Six Single Socket (RICH I/O) models bring 136 PCIe lanes, and the 64-core 6774P is restricted to AI-server host use.

How many drives can the DL340 Gen12 hold?

It depends on the chassis. The SFF model takes 24 × 2.5-inch drives in three 8-bay cages or up to 36 E3.S NVMe drives with the EDSFF front cage; the LFF model holds 12 × 3.5-inch; the Front GPU model keeps 8 × 2.5-inch or 12 E3.S. HPE’s largest capacity figure is 552.9 TB from 36 × 15.36 TB NVMe drives.

Does the DL340 Gen12 support GPUs?

Two are listed: the NVIDIA L4 24GB and the L40S 48GB, and the L40S is limited to the Front GPU chassis. HPE’s GPU-chassis weight table includes a four-card double-wide configuration, which uses the four-GPU enablement kit and needs a Single Socket 6XX1P processor.

How many PCIe and OCP slots does the DL340 Gen12 have?

Two CEM slots at the rear — Slot 3 and Slot 6, PCIe 5.0 x16 FHHL, each on an optional riser. OCP 3.0 is more generous: OCP A is embedded at the rear, OCP B is optional, and the SFF and GPU chassis can add two front OCP slots, all PCIe 5.0 x16. For the LFF chassis HPE’s base-model table says OCP is not supported, yet it lists LFF OCP B cable kits, so we confirm OCP on LFF builds at quote.

Which power supplies can the DL340 Gen12 use?

Seven M-CRPS models: an 800 W Platinum unit, Titanium units from 1000 W to 3200 W, and two −48 V DC units of 1300 W and 2200 W. A server cannot mix types, and on 100–127 V input the 3200 W and 2400 W supplies are rated at 1600 W and 1200 W.

How big and heavy is the DL340 Gen12?

Every chassis is 8.75 cm high and 44.8 cm wide. Depth is 63.95 cm for the SFF and EDSFF versions, 65.61 cm for 12LFF and 83.71 cm for the GPU chassis. HPE’s heaviest listed configurations run from 30.71 kg (36 E3.S drives) to 36.3 kg (GPU chassis with four double-wide cards).

Is there an earlier DL340 generation to compare it with?

Not in HPE’s documentation: the QuickSpecs call the DL340 Gen12 an all-new server and contain no comparison with a predecessor. For a lower-cost route, our refurbished range offers the DL380 Gen10 Plus and the single-socket DL325 Gen10 Plus.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 end of life?

Not according to HPE’s QuickSpecs, which reached Version 15 on 8 September 2026 with a processor added and no withdrawal notice. The document gives no end-of-service date for the model; our server end-of-life checker records such dates once vendors publish them.
