HPE ProLiant Compute DL340e Gen12Specifications, configurations & comparisons

HPE’s ProLiant Compute DL340e Gen12 is a storage-optimised 2U server with one Intel Xeon 6 socket and a single LFF chassis holding 16 or 24 front 3.5-inch drives. Its rear is an either/or decision — E3.S NVMe flash with four PCIe slots, or up to six PCIe slots and no drives — and HPE presents it as the future generation of its Alletra Storage Server 4000 line.

01 — Overview

The DL340e Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL340e Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Up to 24 × 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays in 2U, and HPE’s capacity table fills them with 26 TB disks for 624 TB raw.
  • The Rear EDSFF 4x PCIe kit adds eight E3.S NVMe data bays and two dedicated E3.S boot bays while keeping four PCIe slots.
  • Rear flash can be cabled straight to the processor at PCIe Gen5 x4 or x2, or placed behind an internal controller of its own.
  • Pair a RICH I/O processor with the 6x PCIe kit and the rear offers six PCIe 5.0 slots and two OCP 3.0 slots — room for extra RAID controllers, Fibre Channel HBAs and fast networking.

Watch-outs

  • The rear is either/or: the 6x PCIe kit adds slots only, and the rear EDSFF kit gives up slots 4 and 5 and OCP B.
  • Memory stops at 2 TB — sixteen 128 GB RDIMMs at two per channel, so 5200 MT/s — and no 256 GB module is offered.
  • Each MR216i-p or MR416i-p is rated for up to 16 drives, and HPE’s own configurations with more than 16 front disks carry two controllers; Intel VROC does not cover SATA.
  • Slot 5, OCP B, the x4 rear E3.S cable kit and the two MCIO cable kits for OCP B all require a Single Socket (RICH I/O) processor.
  • A long, heavy box: 80.65 cm deep and up to 46.55 kg in HPE’s maximum configuration, with no optical drive and rails as an option.

30 supported processors, mapped

Thirty Xeon 6 option kits fit the DL340e, from the 8-core 6507P to the 144-core 6766E and 6780E, always one per server. In a storage node the deciding factor is usually I/O rather than core count, because only the six Single Socket (RICH I/O) parts unlock slot 5, OCP B and the fastest rear flash cabling.

  • RICH I/O processors (6511P, 6521P, 6731P, 6741P, 6761P, 6781P) print zero UPI links and are the group HPE associates with 136 PCIe lanes; all three configurations in HPE’s acoustic tables use one.
  • Every DL340e takes the performance heat sink, and the CTO server includes six performance fans.
  • The 6710E, 6731E and 6746E are listed at DDR5 5600 MT/s, and HPE notes delayed availability for HCC and LCC die processors.
  • The tables clash in three places: Standard Features lists the 6515P at 2.4 GHz while its P74506-B21 kit says 2.3 GHz; a 2.3 GHz, 225 W Mainline row is labelled 6730P although kit P74571-B21 names it 6530P; and the orderable 6732P has no Standard Features row.
03 — Memory

16 DDR5 DIMM slots

The board carries sixteen DDR5 RDIMM slots — eight channels, each with two — and the biggest module offered is 128 GB. That puts the ceiling at 2 TB, reached only with every slot filled at 5200 MT/s; one DIMM per channel (8 × 128 GB) gives 1 TB at 6400 MT/s.

  • The RDIMM list runs 16, 32, 64, 96 and 128 GB; no 3DS module appears.
  • Advanced ECC, ADDDC (on by default) and memory mirroring are the protection modes.
  • HPE says every listed processor supports the 2 TB maximum, with top speed set by the processor model.
04 — Storage

3 drive-cage kits, up to 32 bays

The DL340e is organised around its front. One of two factory-fitted LFF kits sets it at 16 or 24 bays, for SAS or SATA drives only. The rear kit then decides whether the server also carries E3.S NVMe flash or keeps all six PCIe slots.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the DL340e Gen12

Four builds weighted towards capacity and data services. Every part is an option our configurator lists for the DL340e, and each link opens ready to change.

Software-defined storage

Ceph or object node with rear flash

HPE aims the DL340e at software-defined storage. Twenty-four disk bays carry the capacity tier while the eight rear E3.S bays hold metadata or cache on NVMe, and a RICH I/O processor lets those bays run Gen5 x4 direct to the CPU.

  • 1 × Xeon 6521P24 cores @ 2.6 GHz, 225 W
  • 24 × 24 TB 3.5" SAS HDD — 576 TB raw
  • 8 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe in the rear cage
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 — 256 GB
  • MR216i-p tri-mode controller (second one needed for all 24 bays)
  • NS204i-u v2 mirrored boot
  • Broadcom BCM57504 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1500 W M-CRPS Titanium

The link opens with one MR216i-p — add a second for the full 24-bay front. The rear EDSFF kit costs PCIe slots 4 and 5 and OCP B, and x4 direct-attach rear cabling needs a RICH I/O processor.

Backup & archive

Maximum-capacity backup repository

HPE’s capacity table peaks at 624 TB from 24 × 26 TB disks. Keeping the Rear 6x PCIe kit leaves slots for a second RAID controller plus external SAS or Fibre Channel HBAs.

  • 1 × Xeon 6511P16 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 150 W
  • 24 × 26 TB 3.5" SATA HDD — 624 TB raw
  • MR416i-p with 8 GB cache (second one needed for 24 drives)
  • NS204i-u v2 mirrored boot
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 — 256 GB
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W M-CRPS Titanium

The link opens with one MR416i-p; add the second for 24 drives. Each MR416i-p needs a 96 W battery or hybrid capacitor.

In-server analytics

Data-lake node with an NVIDIA L4

In-server storage analytics is one of HPE’s named workloads, and its SKU3 test system pairs 16 LFF drives, eight E3.S SSDs and one L4. This build follows that pattern with the same 32-core RICH I/O processor.

  • 1 × Xeon 6731P32 cores @ 2.5 GHz, 245 W
  • 1 × NVIDIA L4 24GB
  • 16 × 24 TB 3.5" SAS HDD — 384 TB raw
  • 8 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe
  • 8 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 — 512 GB
  • MR416i-p with 8 GB cache
  • Intel E810-XXVDA4 4 × 10/25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 2400 W M-CRPS Titanium

HPE’s matching test system adds five rear fans and a fan OCP interposer; we confirm the cooling parts at quote.

File services

16-bay file server on one controller

Where 16 bays are enough, the 16LFF kit matches one MR416i-p’s 16-drive rating, and a Mainline processor without RICH I/O still gets five rear PCIe slots from the 6x PCIe kit.

  • 1 × Xeon 6515P16 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 150 W
  • 16 × 24 TB 3.5" SATA HDD — 384 TB raw
  • One MR416i-p covers all 16 bays
  • NS204i-u v2 mirrored boot
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 — 256 GB
  • Broadcom BCM57416 2 × 10GBASE-T OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1000 W M-CRPS Titanium

12 — FAQ

DL340e Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

How is the DL340e Gen12 different from the DL340 Gen12?

The DL340e is HPE’s storage-optimised single-socket 2U: one LFF chassis with 16 or 24 front 3.5-inch bays and optional rear E3.S flash, with memory capped at 2 TB. The DL340 is built on SFF, LFF or GPU chassis instead, takes up to 4 TB, and its SFF version is 63.95 cm deep against 80.65 cm for the DL340e.

How many drives does the DL340e Gen12 hold?

Up to 24 × 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives at the front, plus eight E3.S NVMe data bays and two E3.S boot bays at the rear with the Rear EDSFF 4x PCIe kit. HPE’s capacity table gives 624 TB from 24 × 26 TB disks.

What is the maximum memory of the DL340e Gen12?

2 TB, using 16 × 128 GB RDIMMs across its 16 slots. With two DIMMs per channel that runs at 5200 MT/s; one DIMM per channel runs at 6400 MT/s but tops out at 1 TB. There is no 256 GB DIMM option.

Can I have rear NVMe drives and six PCIe slots together?

No. Every DL340e takes exactly one of two rear kits. The Rear 6x PCIe kit gives up to six slots and two OCP slots (slot 5 and OCP B need a RICH I/O processor) but no drives; the Rear EDSFF 4x PCIe kit gives the E3.S bays but keeps only slots 1, 2, 3 and 6 and OCP A.

How many RAID controllers does a 24-drive DL340e need?

Both internal controllers, the MR216i-p and MR416i-p, are rated for up to 16 SAS, SATA or NVMe drives, and HPE’s maximum-weight configuration with 24 front disks lists two MR PCIe controllers. Intel VROC is NVMe-only and cannot protect SATA disks.

Does the DL340e Gen12 support GPUs?

Two accelerators are listed, the NVIDIA L4 24GB and the RTX A1000 8GB, with no maximum count stated. HPE’s SKU3 test system combines one L4 with 16 LFF drives, eight E3.S SSDs and two 2400 W supplies.

Which processors suit the DL340e?

All 30 listed Xeon 6 kits fit, from 8 to 144 cores. The six Single Socket (RICH I/O) parts matter most here: HPE links them to 136 PCIe lanes and requires one for slot 5, OCP B and the x4 rear E3.S cabling.

How big and heavy is the DL340e Gen12?

The LFF chassis measures 8.75 × 44.80 × 80.65 cm (H × W × D). HPE gives 22.93 kg for a minimal build and 46.55 kg for one with 24 LFF drives, eight E3.S drives, two supplies, 16 DIMMs and two controllers.

What power supplies does the DL340e take?

M-CRPS hot-plug units only, one type per server: an 800 W Platinum model, Titanium models from 1000 W to 3200 W, and 1300 W or 2200 W units for −48 V DC. Low-line input halves the 3200 W and 2400 W units, to 1600 W and 1200 W.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 end of life?

Not according to HPE: its QuickSpecs appeared in April 2026 and were at Version 5 in August 2026, with no withdrawal notice. No end-of-service date for the model is given there; the Servnet end-of-life checker tracks dates when HPE publishes them.
