The R7725xd is the NVMe-only, storage-dense member of Dell’s two-socket EPYC 9005 family, aimed at object storage: 24 U.2 Gen5 drives at x4 each with no RAID controller in the path, no GPUs and a single 10 GbE-class OCP slot. The R7725xd at a glance
Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the R7725xd is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.
Strengths
+All-NVMe by design: 24 U.2 Gen5 bays at x4 each, or a 40-bay E3.S/E3.L front that Dell’s spec sheet rates at up to 9.8 PB.
+The R7725’s processor list less the 9535 — 19 processors up to the 192-core 9965 — and Dell’s thermal matrix clears all nineteen for 35°C inlet air.
+Drives reach 122 TB per U.2 unit (122.88 TB in the SSD matrix) and 245.76 TB per E3.L unit; the spec sheet quotes 2,928 TB for the U.2 front and 9.8 PB for the E3.S/E3.L front.
+No controller in the data path: Dell lists no internal or external RAID or HBA and no software RAID, so data protection is left to the storage software.
+The U.2 build keeps the R7725’s 2U envelope and 801.51 mm depth without bezel, with the same iDRAC10 and AMD SEV/SME security stack.
Watch-outs
!Onboard networking is thin: one optional OCP 3.0 slot at PCIe Gen3 x4, limited to 4 × 1 GbE or 2 × 10 GbE cards. Faster links need a PCIe add-in NIC.
!Memory tops out at 3 TB because Dell’s xd matrix ends at 128 GB RDIMMs and its thermal table rules out 256 GB modules; the R7725 goes to 256 GB modules and 6 TB.
!No GPUs (Dell’s comparison table and spec sheet list accelerators as N/A), no Direct Liquid Cooling and no rear drive bays.

Nineteen EPYC 9005 processors are listed for the R7725xd: the R7725’s line-up without the 64-core 9535, although the xd’s thermal matrix still carries a 9535 row with no inlet temperature printed. That matrix clears all nineteen listed parts for 35°C inlet air, and what changes with power is the fan grade — HPR Silver up to 300 W, HPR Gold from 320 W to 400 W, and HPR Platinum for the 500 W 9965 and 9755.

The two 500 W SKUs use Dell’s 2U T-wing heat sink; everything at 400 W and below takes the standard heat sink.
TDPs shown follow the processor table. The thermal matrix adds a configurable-TDP maximum for each SKU (240 W for the 210 W 9335, for instance) and lists the 9575F at 320 W against 400 W in the processor table.
Dell lists no single-processor riser configuration for the xd: RC1, RC3 and RC4 all call for two processors.
Fresh-air (ASHRAE A3 / A4) limits are printed two ways: the xd’s restriction table caps processors at 240 W and 195 W, while the fresh-air list above it rules out anything of 180 W or more.
03 — Memory
24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor
The xd keeps the R7725’s 24 DDR5 slots, twelve channels per socket with one DIMM on each, all rated at 6400 MT/s. What it drops is the 256 GB module: Dell’s xd memory matrix ends at 128 GB and its thermal table marks 256 GB DIMMs unsupported, which puts the ceiling at 3 TB instead of 6 TB.

Every listed RDIMM runs at 6400 MT/s at one DIMM per channel. The 9455 is rated for 6000 MT/s memory, and Dell cautions that some SKUs run DIMMs below their rated speed.
The processor table still prints a 6 TB memory capacity against every SKU; the platform limit given in the memory chapter and the spec sheet is 3 TB.
Fresh-air (A3 / A4) deployments exclude DIMMs of 64 GB and above, which caps such a server at 24 × 32 GB, or 768 GB.
CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory is named among the platform’s new technologies, but the xd guide carries no CXL configuration table.
04 — Storage
2 drive-bay layouts, up to 40 bays
Storage is the point of the xd, and it is NVMe-only. Dell’s internal-storage list names a single configuration, 24 × 2.5-inch U.2 Gen5 NVMe; the overview, comparison table, dimension table and spec sheet add a 40-bay E3.S/E3.L front. There are no rear bays, no RAID or HBA controllers and no software RAID.

The build Dell’s storage, weight and thermal tables describe: 24 U.2 Gen5 NVMe bays at x4 each, up to 2,928 TB with 122 TB drives according to the spec sheet.
Drive list: 2.5-inch NVMe read-intensive from 3.84 TB to 122 TB plus a 6.4 TB mixed-use drive; E3.S at 30.72, 61.44 and 122 TB; E3.L at 245.76 TB.
The largest U.2 capacities — 30.72, 61.44 and 122.88 TB — appear in the SSD matrix as both Gen4 and Gen5 parts in Dell’s VRI endurance class.
The operating system boots from the rear BOSS-N1 DC-MHS card, whose two M.2 NVMe devices (480 GB or 960 GB) run as RAID 1 or RAID 0, so every front bay stays available for data.
Fully populated, the U.2 build weighs 26.74 kg in riser configuration RC1 and 26.95 kg in RC3.

RC1 (risers 1, 2, 4 and 5) and RC3 (risers 1, 2 and 5) each give four slots; RC4 (risers 1, 2, 3 and 5) brings slot 4 and the fifth slot, but carries Dell’s not-at-launch asterisk.
None of the three riser configurations supports rear storage or a PERC.
NC-SI is supported only on the embedded OCP slot (slot 10), and the xd’s OCP list has two cards: Broadcom 4 × 1 GbE and 2 × 10 GbE, both BT.
For faster uplinks Dell’s spec sheet lists PCIe add-in NICs at 100 GbE and 400 GbE, including NDR VPI (400 GbE). The xd guide has no DPU table.
Per processor, Dell lists as many as 128 lanes of high-speed I/O, with xGMI3 peaking at 32 Gbps.

4 power supplies, 1,500–3,200 W
Four Titanium supplies, hot-plug and 1+1 redundant, in 60 mm (1500 W, 1800 W) and 73.5 mm (2400 W, 3200 W) M-CRPS form factors. Every option takes 240 V DC as well as AC; the xd has no 277 V or −48 V DC unit.

The 1800 W and 2400 W supplies carry Dell’s not-at-launch asterisk; the 1500 W and 3200 W units do not.
On 100–120 V the 1500 W unit gives 1050 W and the 2400 W unit 1400 W. The 1800 W and 3200 W need high line, and the 3200 W unit delivers its full rating only between 220.1 and 240 V; from 200 to 220 V Dell rates it at 2900 W.
Dell’s rating table also lists peak power: 2325 W for the 1500 W supply and 5440 W for the 3200 W supply at high line.

The R7725xd family side by side
Like the R7725, the xd is a two-socket EPYC 9005 2U server; two further EPYC 9005 siblings are the R7715 (2U, one socket) and the R6725 (1U, two sockets). The R7625 is the earlier EPYC two-socket 2U, and the Xeon Scalable R760xd2, whose guide lists up to 24 + 4 × 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays, is Dell’s other storage-heavy 2U. Object storage is the one workload Dell names for the R7725xd. Twenty-four 15.36 TB U.2 drives give 368.64 TB raw per 2U node, two 32-core 9355s run on HPR Silver fans at 35°C in Dell’s matrix, and the BOSS-N1 pair keeps the OS off the data drives.

The OCP slot stops at 10 GbE. For more, Dell’s spec sheet lists 100 GbE and 400 GbE PCIe NICs; those cards are not in our configurator yet, so ask for one on the quote.
Scale-out storage software that protects data across nodes has no need for a RAID controller, and the xd has none. Two 64-core 9555s and 1.5 TB of DDR5 sit behind 24 × 7.68 TB U.2 drives, 184.32 TB raw per node, on the 1500 W supplies Dell used in its own acoustic test of this chassis.

The E3.S/E3.L front turns the xd into a petabyte-class box: forty 61.44 TB E3.S drives add up to 2,457.6 TB raw in 2U. Two 96-core 9655s and 1.5 TB of memory run the storage stack, and 3200 W supplies leave the most power headroom Dell offers on this model.

What is the Dell PowerEdge R7725xd designed for?
Dell positions the R7725xd for object storage. It combines two EPYC 9005 processors with an all-NVMe front — 24 × 2.5-inch U.2 Gen5 drives, or 40 EDSFF E3.S/E3.L drives — and fits no RAID controller, so data protection is handled by the storage software.
How many drives does the R7725xd hold?
Dell’s internal-storage section lists 24 × 2.5-inch U.2 Gen5 NVMe bays. Its overview, comparison table and chassis dimensions, and the spec sheet, also list 40 × E3.S/E3.L Gen5 NVMe, rated up to 9.8 PB. Neither build has rear bays.
Does the R7725xd support hardware RAID?
Not for the data drives. Dell lists no internal or external PERC or HBA and no software RAID for the xd; the only RAID is on the BOSS-N1 boot card, which runs its two M.2 drives as RAID 1 or RAID 0. Protection for the front drives is up to the operating system or storage software.
What is the maximum memory of the R7725xd?
3 TB, using 24 × 128 GB RDIMMs — one per channel across twelve channels per processor. Dell’s xd memory matrix ends at 128 GB and its thermal table excludes 256 GB DIMMs, so the R7725’s 6 TB ceiling does not carry over.
Can the R7725xd take GPUs?
No. Accelerators are N/A in Dell’s comparison table, the spec sheet offers no GPU option, and its thermal matrix is written for no-GPU configurations only. For GPU work the R7725 is the sibling to look at, with two 450 W double-width cards or six single-width cards.
How many PCIe slots and network ports does the R7725xd have?

In its U.2 form the xd stands 86.8 mm tall and 482.0 mm across, with a depth of 802.4 mm including the bezel, and a fully populated system weighs at most 26.95 kg. The E3.S/E3.L chassis is longer, at 831.85 mm with the bezel fitted.
How does the R7725xd differ from the R7725?
Both are two-socket EPYC 9005 2U servers. The R7725 adds SAS/SATA and 3.5-inch layouts, front PERCs, up to two 450 W GPUs, eight Gen5 slots, two Gen5 OCP slots, liquid cooling, 256 GB DIMMs and 6 TB of memory. The xd gives all of that up for an NVMe-only, controller-free front and air cooling.
Is the Dell PowerEdge R7725xd end of life?
The R7725xd guide publishes no end-of-sale or end-of-service date. Dell’s services chapter offers Post Standard Support to keep the hardware covered for as many as five extra years once ProSupport’s first seven-year span ends; our end-of-life checker records the dates when Dell announces them.
