The PowerEdge R7715 is Dell’s single-socket 2U EPYC 9005 server: the processor and memory design of the 1U R6715 with room for eight Gen5 slots, 40 E3.S drives and three double-wide GPUs. This data sheet lays out Dell’s documented options and limits, including which drive layouts GPU builds allow, CXL memory, and the 73.5 mm high-output power supplies.

01 — Overview

The R7715 at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the R7715 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Eight x16 Gen5 slots on one EPYC 9005 socket — twice the four Gen5 slots of the R7615 it succeeds.
  • Room for three double-wide GPUs or six single-wide L4s, with the NVIDIA L40S, A16, H100 NVL and H200 NVL named in Dell’s GPU memory table.
  • Up to 40 EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe bays, or 24 × 2.5-inch and 12 × 3.5-inch SAS/SATA fronts for capacity.
  • CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory: 24 × 256 GB plus two CXL cards reaches 6,912 GB in Dell’s table.
  • Unlike the 1U R6715, every listed processor — the 24-core 9275F included — is supported on air in the non-GPU layouts Dell tabulates.

Watch-outs

  • There are no rear drive bays at all; the R7615 offered up to four rear 2.5-inch or E3.S bays.
  • Using the second slot of each channel costs bandwidth: 5200 MT/s becomes 4400 MT/s with 16 GB modules and 4000 MT/s with anything larger.
  • Dell’s air-cooled GPU-configuration tables (GPU shroud, HPR Platinum fans) cover only the 16 × 2.5-inch, 8 × 2.5-inch and 8 × E3.S fronts, and the 9275F is not supported in them; only the L4 is listed for the other layouts.
  • Dell prints the double-wide GPU ceiling as 400 W in its comparison table and 450 W in its spec sheet, and 256 GB DIMMs are still TBD in every thermal table.
  • The 3200 W supplies need C19 or APP/Saf-D-Grid connections, and the 3200 W Titanium delivers 2900 W below 220 V.

The R7715 draws on the same 18-processor EPYC 9005 list as Dell’s single-socket 1U R6715: eight to 160 cores, TDPs of 125–400 W, P-suffix parts included. What the 2U chassis changes is cooling — with 2U-Ext heat sinks and up to six fans, Dell supports every listed processor on air at 35°C in the non-GPU layouts it tabulates, the 9275F among them.

  • Dell’s thermal tables print a cTDP and a maximum cTDP rather than the TDP of the processor table, and two parts disagree: 280 W / 300 W for the 9335 (210 W in Table 17) and 320 W / 400 W for the 9655P (400 W in Table 17).
  • Table 17’s rows for the 9535 and 9455 are shifted one column, leaving no base clock; read that way they have 64 and 48 cores at 300 W, which the GPU thermal table matches, while the non-GPU air table prints 65 cores for the 9535.
  • In air-cooled non-GPU builds, processors up to 300 W run Silver fans and those from 320 W up need HPR Gold fans, all on the 2U-Ext heat sink.
  • GPU builds move the processor to the 1U GPU heat sink with HPR Platinum fans, and the 9275F is not supported there; with Direct Liquid Cooling in a GPU build its status is TBD.
  • The processor table lists 6400 MT/s memory for most parts and 6000 MT/s for the 9535 and 9455; the platform runs memory at 5200 MT/s at most.
03 — Memory

24 DDR5 DIMM slots

One processor, 12 channels and two slots per channel: 24 RDIMM slots and 6 TB, the same arrangement as the 1U R6715 but with CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory available on top. Population sets the speed — 5200 MT/s with one DIMM per channel, 4400 or 4000 MT/s with two.

  • * 4400 MT/s is for 16 GB single-rank modules; 32–128 GB dual-rank and 256 GB eight-rank RDIMMs run at 4000 MT/s with both slots of a channel filled.
  • CXL memory uses riser configuration 7 and the processor’s P0 port (x8 + x8). Dell tabulates three builds: 24 × 96 GB plus two 4 × 96 GB cards (3,072 GB), 24 × 128 GB plus two 4 × 128 GB cards (4,096 GB), and 24 × 256 GB plus two 4 × 96 GB cards (6,912 GB).
  • CXL rules: all 24 native slots filled, four or more DIMMs per card, no more than two cards, and no 256 GB DIMMs on a card.
  • Dell sizes system memory at 1.5 to 2 times the installed GPU memory, which it works out as 423–564 GB with three H100 NVL cards and 635–846 GB with three H200 NVL.
  • 96 GB and 128 GB RDIMMs call for HPR Gold fans in air-cooled non-GPU builds; 256 GB modules are marked TBD in every thermal table.
  • UDIMMs are not supported; every listed DIMM is rated 6400 MT/s at 1.1 V.
04 — Storage

10 drive-bay layouts, up to 40 bays

Eleven front layouts and no rear bays. They run from a diskless build and a two-drive U.2 option, through 12 × 3.5-inch and 24 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA, to 40 EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe bays, with a mixed 16 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA plus 8 × U.2 layout in between.

  • Every riser configuration uses a front PERC — H975i, H965i or H365i inside, H965e or HBA465e for external shelves. There is no software RAID and no Tri-Mode mixing of SAS, SATA and NVMe on one controller.
  • Boot is on the rear BOSS-N1 DC-MHS module, which carries a pair of read-intensive M.2 NVMe drives, 480 GB or 960 GB each, in RAID 1 or RAID 0; internal USB boot is not offered.
  • Drive capacities reach 61.44 TB for E3.S and 2.5-inch NVMe; 3.5-inch drives run from 2 TB to 24 TB, with 32 TB listed for after launch.
  • Dell’s non-GPU air-cooling columns cover the 24 × 2.5-inch, 16 × 2.5-inch, 16 × E3.S, 32 × E3.S and no-backplane/2 × U.2 fronts (16 × E3.S is printed twice); the 8 × E3.S front appears only in the GPU and liquid-cooling tables, and the 12 × 3.5-inch and 40 × E3.S fronts in none.
  • Dell’s storage chapter labels the 12 × 3.5-inch, 16 × 2.5-inch and 24 × 2.5-inch backplanes Universal, whereas its feature list, comparison table and spec sheet describe them as SAS/SATA.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Unlike the 1U R6715, the R7715 takes double-wide GPUs. The ceiling is three double-width GPUs or six 75 W single-width cards, and the GPU memory table in Dell’s guide covers the NVIDIA L4, L40S, A16, H100 NVL and H200 NVL. The spec sheet names slots 2, 4 and 7 for double-width, full-length cards. Up to 3 × double-wide (400 W per Dell’s comparison table, 450 W per its spec sheet) or 6 × 75 W single-wide.

One processor supplies up to 128 lanes of high-speed I/O, spread across up to eight x16 Gen5 slots on five riser positions plus the embedded OCP 3.0 slot; slot 4 can host a second OCP card in place of a PCIe card. Dell lists seven riser configurations, all single-processor and none with rear storage.

  • Slot 4 doubles as the second OCP 3.0 position (OCP 3.0c); the embedded OCP slot 10 is the only one that supports NC-SI and a shared BMC port.
  • Riser configurations 1 to 5, 7 and 8 all run on one processor with a front PERC; none supports rear drives.
  • Add-in NIC support extends to eight cards (1 × 400 GbE or 2 × 100 GbE), alongside a maximum of two Fibre Channel HBAs at FC32 or FC64.
  • The BlueField-3 B3220 DPU (150 W, FHHL) is listed for slot 7 in riser configurations 1 and 2, and for slots 2 or 7 in configurations 3, 4, 5 and 8.
  • OCP cards run at Gen5 up to x16, with up to four ports and 400 GbE (a 2 × 200 GbE card configured as 1 × 400 GbE).

11 power supplies, 800–3,200 W

Eleven supply options across two form factors, with up to two fitted in 1+1. The 73.5 mm units are the 3200 W Titanium, a 3200 W unit for 277 VAC or HVDC and, in Dell’s cable table, the 2400 W Titanium; the 60 mm range covers 800 W to 1800 W, a 1500 W 277 VAC/HVDC unit and a 1400 W −48 V DC telco supply. Dell’s GPU acoustic test build runs a pair of 3200 W units.

  • 3200 W Titanium: 2900 W output from 200 V and the full 3200 W only from 220.1–240 V, drawing 16 A at 200–240 VAC.
  • The 2400 W Titanium gives 1400 W on 100–120 V low line; the 1500 W and 1100 W supplies drop to 1050 W, and the 800 W units keep 800 W.
  • Power leads: C19 on the 3200 W and 2400 W AC supplies, C16 on the 1800 W and C13 on units of 1500 W or less; both 277 VAC supplies use APP/Saf-D-Grid, and the −48 V unit a DC cable.
  • Dell’s tables disagree on two input ranges: its comparison lists the 2400 W as 200–240 VAC and the 1800 W as 100–240 VAC, while the PSU specification gives 100–240 VAC and 200–240 VAC respectively.
  • The 1800 W Titanium was not available at the November 2025 launch, and with mixed wattages only the larger supply is enabled.
  • The 2400 W Titanium is listed as 73.5 mm in Dell’s power-cable table but as 60 mm in its efficiency table.

Air-cooled GPU builds need the GPU air shroud, the 1U GPU heat sink and HPR Platinum fans. Dell’s double-wide limit is 400 W per card in its comparison table and 450 W in the spec sheet, and the 3200 W Titanium delivers 2900 W below 220 V.

What is the maximum memory of the Dell PowerEdge R7715?

Six terabytes of DDR5 in 24 RDIMM slots (24 × 256 GB), two per channel on the single processor, which runs them at 4000 MT/s. With CXL, Dell’s table reaches 6,912 GB by adding two CXL cards of 4 × 96 GB to the 24 × 256 GB native DIMMs.

Which processors does the R7715 support?

It shares the R6715’s list of 18 EPYC 9005 processors — 8 cores (9015) up to 160 (9845), 125 W to 400 W. In the R7715 all 18, the 9275F included, are supported on air at 35°C in the non-GPU layouts Dell tabulates; in air-cooled GPU builds the 9275F is not supported.

How many drive bays does the R7715 have?

Forty EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe bays is the maximum, all of them at the front. The remaining fronts are 32, 16 or 8 × E3.S, 24 or 16 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA, 16 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA plus 8 × U.2 NVMe, 8 × 2.5-inch Universal, 12 × 3.5-inch, 2 × U.2 or no backplane. There are no rear bays.

How many GPUs does the R7715 support?

Up to three double-wide GPUs or six 75 W single-wide cards. Dell’s memory guidance names the L4, L40S, A16, H100 NVL and H200 NVL. Its comparison table rates the double-wide cards at up to 400 W and its spec sheet at 450 W, and its air-cooled GPU-configuration tables cover the 16 × 2.5-inch, 8 × 2.5-inch and 8 × E3.S fronts, with the L4 also listed for the non-GPU layouts.

How many PCIe slots does the R7715 have?

Up to eight x16 PCIe Gen5 slots (1–5 and 7–9) on five riser positions, plus OCP NIC 3.0 slot 10; slot 4 can take a second OCP card instead of a PCIe card. Slots 2, 4 and 7 take double-width, full-length cards.

Which power supplies does the R7715 support?

Two hot-plug supplies in 1+1, chosen from eleven: 3200 W Titanium and 3200 W 277 VAC/HVDC in the 73.5 mm size, a 2400 W Titanium (73.5 mm in one Dell table, 60 mm in another), and 800 W to 1800 W units, a 1500 W 277 VAC/HVDC supply and a 1400 W −48 V DC unit in 60 mm. How does the R7715 compare with the R6715 and R7725?

The R6715 shares the processor list and 24-slot memory layout in 1U, but stops at three PCIe slots, 22 bays and three single-wide GPUs, and has no CXL support. The R7725 is Dell’s two-socket 2U EPYC 9005 model. The R7715 suits buyers who want slots, GPUs or E3.S capacity on one socket.

What changed from the R7615 to the R7715?

Per Dell’s comparison, cores rise from 128 to 160, DIMM slots from 12 to 24 and memory speed from 4800 to 5200 MT/s, while PCIe Gen5 slots double from four to eight and the three-GPU limit rises from 300 W to 400 W per card. The front grows to 40 E3.S bays, but rear bays, the optional LOM and S160 software RAID are gone, and management moves to iDRAC10.

Is the Dell PowerEdge R7715 end of life?
