HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12Specifications, configurations & comparisons

The ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12 is HPE’s 4U accelerator server for Intel Xeon 6: two processors, 32 DDR5 slots and a front bay for up to ten double-wide GPUs. Ordering it is a chain of dependencies — the GPU count sets the supply count and switchboard kits, and the storage cabling decides how many rear slots survive — and this data sheet maps those rules from the QuickSpecs.

01 — Overview

The DL380a Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL380a Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Ten double-wide GPU positions in 4U, with the H200 NVL, RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, RTX PRO 6000D, L40S, L20 and L4 in HPE’s accelerator list.
  • Xeon 6 in both core types — six E-core models spanning 64–144 cores and 26 P-core models spanning 8–86 — all rated for DDR5-6400 apart from the 5600 MT/s 6710E and 6746E.
  • H200 NVL cards can be linked with HPE-listed 2-way or 4-way NVLink bridges in every layout except the ten-GPU 10DW configuration.
  • Memory reaches 8 TB with 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, and a 4 TB build at one DIMM per channel keeps the full 6400 MT/s.
  • Two OCP 3.0 slots, six rear PCIe 5.0 x16 positions and a front-NIC mode that takes four networking cards at the front of the chassis.

Watch-outs

  • Supply count follows GPU count: five M-CRPS units (two for the system board, three for GPUs) with two or four double-wide GPUs, and eight with eight or ten.
  • Storage is NVMe-only and small — four or eight U.3, or four, eight or (by HPE’s storage table) sixteen E3.S — and the eight-drive rear direct-attach cabling leaves just two rear PCIe slots.
  • The iLO 6 CTO model (P74461-B21) cannot move to iLO 7 and rules out P-core processors, the RTX PRO 6000 and a list of NICs, controllers and HBAs.
  • HPE ties the Xeon 6776P to AI-host use: its warranty is void if the processor is used for general compute.
  • The ten-GPU layout drops NVLink bridge support and needs the front fan module and front panel kits; CPU liquid cooling cannot be combined with it.

  • The 12-core 6505P appears only in the feature table, with no option kit to order.
  • The 8-core 6714P is shown at 195 W in the feature table but at 165 W in its option-kit name.
  • P-core processors are not available on the iLO 6 CTO model (P74461-B21), which leaves that model the six E-core parts.
  • The 6505P, 6507P, 6515P and 6517P have three UPI links and every other processor four; HPE’s table gives no link speed.
  • An optional CPU direct liquid cooling kit (P82520-B21) holds two cold plates and a quick-disconnect module, needs the 55 cm tube set (P62042-B21) and occupies rear PCIe slot 1.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

The board carries 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots — 16 per processor on eight channels, up to two DIMMs each. HPE rates its DDR5-6400 kits for 6400 MT/s with a lone DIMM per channel, dropping to 5200 MT/s once a second shares it, so the 8 TB maximum (32 × 256 GB) runs at 5200 MT/s and the 4 TB one-per-channel build at 6400 MT/s.

Operating speed

per HPE memory tables
Processor1 DIMM / channel2 DIMMs / channel
Intel Xeon 6 (E-core and P-core)6400 MT/s*5200 MT/s
  • * The processor caps the speed: HPE lists the 6710E and 6746E at 5600 MT/s and every other processor at 6400 MT/s.
  • Per-processor DIMM counts are 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 with E-core parts and 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 with P-core parts; the ordering step instead gives system totals of 4, 8, 16 or 32 (E-core) and 4, 8, 16, 24 or 32 (P-core), which leaves out a single DIMM per socket.
  • The 16 GB DIMM is limited to quantities of 4, 8 or 16 and is not supported with E-core processors.
  • HPE recommends system memory of twice the GPU memory: eight 141 GB H200 NVL cards (1,128 GB) point to 2,256 GB of RDIMM.
  • Ranks cannot be mixed, x4 and x8 DIMMs cannot share a channel or socket, and every DIMM on a socket runs at one speed.
04 — Storage

2 drive-cage kits, up to 16 bays

The single front drive bay takes four-bay cages of one kind — 4SFF x4 U.3 NVMe or 4EDSFF — and one 4SFF cage is the shipping default. Only NVMe drives are offered, with no SAS, SATA or LFF option. HPE’s maximum-storage table quotes 122.88 TB on eight 15.36 TB U.3 drives and 245.76 TB on sixteen 15.36 TB E3.S drives.

  • The MR416i-p and MR416i-o need two 4SFF cages and the NVMe-to-tri-mode cable kits, which HPE offers only for the iLO 7 CTO model (P76706-B21); every controller needs a battery or hybrid capacitor.
  • Intel VROC runs up to eight direct-attached NVMe drives; it is off by default and licensed through the Premium FIO kit (R7J57A).
  • The NS204i-u v2 boot device (480 GB, 960 GB or 960 GB SED) sits in a front chassis slot with the front cage kit P75284-B21 and takes no PCIe slot.
  • EDSFF drives fit only the 4EDSFF cage and SFF drives only the 4SFF cage, and the two cage types cannot be mixed.

  • Slot 4 is unavailable in the four- and eight-double-wide configurations.
  • HPE describes slot 1 two ways: usable only with the 4EDSFF Direct Attach Cable for NVIDIA (P74716-B21) and not with SFF NVMe drives, yet also enabled by the Rear PCIe Slot1/4 cable kit (P76698-B21) and the 5-slot kit. The CPU liquid-cooling kit occupies it.
  • The PCIe Rear FIO Kit (P74690-B21) turns on slots 2 and 5 for non-GPU cards — four usable slots in all, or five with the P74716-B21 cable.
  • OCP adapters use no PCIe slot; one card needs the OCPB kit or two OCPA kits, and two cards need both.
  • There is no embedded LAN. One DPU (BlueField B3220 or B3140H) is allowed per server and needs the 5-slot kit.
  • Fibre Channel HBAs can only be ordered on the iLO 7 CTO model (P76706-B21).
06 — Power & cooling

3 power supplies, 2,400–3,200 W

Supplies are HPE M-CRPS hot-plug units: 2400 W and 3200 W Titanium for 200–240 VAC, and a 2800 W Titanium unit for 277 VAC. Two or four double-wide GPUs need five supplies — two for the system board and three for the GPUs — and eight or ten need eight. Our configurator link shows two, so the documented count is set on the quote.

  • H200 NVL and RTX PRO 6000 builds require the 2400 W or 3200 W supplies, which take C19/C19-C20 cords only; the same notes mention an H100 NVL that is not in the option list.
  • Supply models cannot be mixed in one server.
  • A server first built with fewer than eight GPUs can be field-upgraded to eight with the GPU Upgrade Kit (P81677-B21), which brings power cables and four PCIe switchboards; a five-supply server then needs three more of the same capacity.
  • Per-supply heat output tops out at 8572 BTU/hr for the 2400 W unit (200 VAC) and 11713 BTU/hr for the 3200 W unit (220 VAC); the table also lists a 1500 W supply that is not an option here.
  • On the iLO 6 CTO model more than five supplies calls for a PDB kit; the iLO 7 model needs none.
  • Cooling is four hot-plug fan assemblies, each one dual-rotor 92 mm fan and two single-rotor 40 mm fans; a failed fan, or inlet air warmer than 30 °C, can cost performance.

09 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the DL380a Gen12

Four DL380a Gen12 builds from options our configurator permits on this model. The link opens with one drive cage and two supplies; the lines give HPE’s real counts — five or eight supplies, and any second cage — which we set on the quote. HPE writes its supply and switchboard counts for double-wide GPUs but prints no card widths, so each count is confirmed build by build.

Eight H200 NVL with NVLink

Eight 141 GB H200 NVL cards hold 1,128 GB of GPU memory, and HPE lists 2-way and 4-way NVLink bridges for this card. Sixteen 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs give 4 TB at one DIMM per channel — more than the 2,256 GB HPE’s twice-GPU-memory guideline asks for — behind two 64-core Xeon 6767P processors.

  • 2 × Xeon 6767P64 cores @ 2.4 GHz, 350 W each
  • 8 × NVIDIA H200 NVL 141 GB · NVLink bridges added on the quote
  • 16 × 256 GB DDR5-6400 3DS RDIMM — 4 TB at one DIMM per channel
  • 4 × 30.72 TB E3.S NVMe in one 4EDSFF cage
  • NS204i-u v2 boot device in the front cage
  • HPE InfiniBand XDR / 2 × 400 GbE 1-port OSFP adapter
  • 8 × 3200 W M-CRPS Titanium — HPE’s count for eight double-wide GPUs (set on the quote)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (3-year)
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

Eight double-wide GPUs need two Switchboard FIO Enablement kits (P74714-B21), and the H200 NVL requires the 2400 W or 3200 W supplies. NVLink bridges work only with the H200 NVL and not in the ten-GPU layout. Rear slot 4 is unavailable with eight double-wide GPUs.

Eight RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell

Eight 96 GB RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell cards — the most HPE allows of this model — give 768 GB of GPU memory for inference, rendering or simulation. Two 64-core Xeon 6776P processors, which HPE sells for AI-host duty, sit beside 32 × 64 GB of DDR5 for 2 TB.

  • 2 × Xeon 6776P64 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 350 W each
  • 8 × NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition 96 GB
  • 32 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 2 TB, two per channel (5200 MT/s)
  • 4 × 7.68 TB U.3 NVMe in the default 4SFF cage, direct-attached
  • NS204i-u v2 boot device in the front cage
  • HPE InfiniBand NDR200 / 200 GbE 1-port OSFP PCIe 5.0 x16
  • 8 × 2400 W M-CRPS Titanium — HPE’s count for eight double-wide GPUs (set on the quote)
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

Eight RTX PRO 6000 cards need the Front Chassis Fan Module Kit (P79656-B21) and Front Panel Kit (P79660-B21), are not supported in the 8DW NIC configuration and are not offered on the iLO 6 CTO model. The default single-cage cabling rules out OCP cards, so networking is a PCIe adapter. HPE voids the 6776P warranty for general-compute use.

Inference at density

Ten L40S in the 10DW layout

The 10DW configuration fills every front GPU position: ten 48 GB L40S cards, 480 GB of GPU memory in all, for many concurrent inference or graphics sessions. Sixteen 64 GB RDIMMs give 1 TB — a little over twice the GPU memory — on 32-core Xeon 6737P processors.

  • 2 × Xeon 6737P32 cores @ 2.9 GHz, 270 W each
  • 10 × NVIDIA L40S 48 GB (10DW FIO configuration)
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB, one per channel
  • 4 × 3.84 TB U.3 NVMe in the default 4SFF cage
  • NS204i-u v2 boot device in the front cage
  • Broadcom BCM57608 2 × 100 GbE QSFP112 PCIe
  • 8 × 2400 W M-CRPS Titanium — HPE’s count for ten double-wide GPUs (set on the quote)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

The 10DW configuration is not offered on the iLO 6 CTO model; it pairs with the 10 Double Wide captive riser kit and needs the Front Chassis Fan Module and Front Panel kits. It supports no NVLink bridges, cannot be combined with CPU liquid cooling, and with the 5-slot cable kit leaves rear slots 1, 3 and 6 for non-GPU cards. HPE sets no L40S-specific count beyond its general 0/1/2/4/8/10 rule and prints no card widths, so the ten-card fit is confirmed on the quote.

Video & edge analytics

E-core host with four L4 cards

Four 24 GB L4 cards handle video analytics and light inference while two 144-core Xeon 6780E processors run the surrounding container workload — 288 cores in the node. Sixteen 64 GB RDIMMs give 1 TB, and four E3.S drives hold the working set.

  • 2 × Xeon 6780E144 cores @ 2.2 GHz, 330 W each
  • 4 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB, one per channel
  • 4 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe in one 4EDSFF cage
  • NS204i-u v2 boot device in the front cage
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25 GbE SFP28 PCIe
  • M-CRPS Titanium supplies — count confirmed for L4 cards (set on the quote)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
  • HPE Tech Care Basic

HPE’s supply rule is written for double-wide GPU counts and the QuickSpecs print no width for the L4, so the supply count is confirmed at quote. E-core processors take DIMMs in totals of 4, 8, 16 or 32 and cannot use the 16 GB module.

11 — FAQ

DL380a Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

How many GPUs does the HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12 hold?

Up to ten double-wide GPUs in its 4U chassis, in allowed counts of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 or 10. The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell stops at eight, models cannot be mixed, and eight or ten double-wide cards need two switchboard enablement kits and eight power supplies.

Which GPUs can the DL380a Gen12 take?

HPE lists the NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition 96 GB, RTX PRO 6000D 84 GB, H200 NVL 141 GB, L40S 48 GB, L20 48 GB and L4 24 GB. Only the H200 NVL can use HPE’s 2-way and 4-way NVLink bridges. The QuickSpecs give no per-card power or width, so cooling and supply sizing are confirmed build by build.

What is the maximum memory of the DL380a Gen12?

8 TB, with all 32 slots holding 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs at 5200 MT/s. At one DIMM per channel the ceiling is 4 TB (16 × 256 GB) at 6400 MT/s. HPE also recommends twice the installed GPU memory in system RAM.

Which processors does the DL380a Gen12 support?

Two identical Intel Xeon 6 processors — one of the six 6700E E-core models (64–144 cores) or one of 26 P-core models (8–86 cores), rated 150 W to 350 W. P-core parts are not offered on the iLO 6 CTO model, and HPE’s warranty covers the 6776P only as an AI host processor.

How many drives does the DL380a Gen12 hold?

Four U.3 NVMe drives in the default 4SFF cage, eight with two cages, or E3.S NVMe in 4EDSFF cages. HPE’s storage table and two controller and cable options describe sixteen E3.S drives in four cages, while the cage kit lists a maximum of two, or eight drives. There are no SAS, SATA or LFF options.

How many power supplies does the DL380a Gen12 need?

Five M-CRPS supplies with two or four double-wide GPUs — two for the system board, three for the GPUs — and eight with eight or ten. The choices are 2400 W and 3200 W Titanium and a 2800 W 277 VAC unit; models cannot be mixed, and H200 NVL or RTX PRO 6000 builds need 2400 W or 3200 W.

What separates the two DL380a Gen12 CTO models?

P76706-B21 (8 Double Wide/16 Single-Wide) carries iLO 7 and takes every listed option. P74461-B21 (8DW) has iLO 6, cannot be upgraded to iLO 7, and excludes P-core processors, the RTX PRO 6000, the 10DW and 8DW NIC modes, the tri-mode controllers and a set of NICs and HBAs.

How big and heavy is the DL380a Gen12?

HPE lists it at 17.47 × 44.78 × 80.26 cm (height, width, depth), and gives a minimum weight of 37.5 kg and a maximum of 62.5 kg with the front fan assembly used for ten-GPU builds, or 67.36 kg packaged with rails, cable arm and cords.

How does the DL380a Gen12 differ from the DL380a Gen11?

By the two QuickSpecs, the Gen11 is a 2U server for four double-wide or eight single-wide GPUs, with 4th or 5th Gen Xeon Scalable, 24 DIMM slots to 3 TB, iLO 6 and Flex Slot supplies. The Gen12 moves to 4U and up to ten double-wide GPUs, with Xeon 6, 32 slots to 8 TB, iLO 7 on its main CTO model and M-CRPS supplies.

Is the HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12 end of life?

HPE’s QuickSpecs, at version 20 of 8 September 2026, do not state an end-of-sale or end-of-support date for this server, and its change log marks only options obsolete — Omni-Path and InfiniBand adapters among them. Our end-of-life checker will list dates if HPE publishes them.
