The XE7740 is Dell’s air-cooled 4U PCIe GPU server for Intel Xeon 6: up to eight double-wide 600 W accelerators or sixteen single-width L4s on a switched PCIe board, with eight Gen5 slots for the cluster network and eight power supplies in two zones. This page sets out what Dell documents, including the memory-per-GPU rules and NVLink bridge options.

01 — Overview

The XE7740 at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the XE7740 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Eight double-wide slots at up to 600 W accept five different cards — NVIDIA H100 NVL, H200 NVL, L40S and RTX Pro 6000, or Intel Gaudi 3 — or sixteen single-width L4s.
  • NVLink is available through bridges: 2-way for H100 NVL pairs and 4-way for groups of four H200 NVL cards.
  • Eight Gen5 x16 adapter slots at up to 150 W each give one fabric slot per double-wide GPU, with 400GbE and 200GbE cards in Dell’s port table.
  • All three processors, every DIMM size and most GPUs are cleared at 35°C on air alone, with no liquid-cooling requirement.
  • Eight supplies in separate CPU and GPU zones support A/B grid operation that rides through up to four supply losses at reduced performance.

Watch-outs

  • Only three processors are offered, all 330–350 W Xeon 6 P-core parts, and the system is two-socket only.
  • Memory is tied to GPU count: eight H200 NVL, H100 NVL or RTX Pro 6000 cards need at least 1.5 TB, and Dell warns that unvalidated pairings can stop the system booting.
  • H200 NVL and most RTX Pro 6000 layouts are limited to a 30°C inlet, 5°C below the rest of the list.
  • Storage is fixed at eight E3.S bays with no RAID controller, and the chassis weighs up to 71.35 kg.
  • Dell measured up to 87 dB at the bystander position at 35°C, recommends ear protection and positions the server for unattended data centres.

02 — Processors

3 supported processors, mapped

Dell lists just three processors, all Intel Xeon 6 6700P P-core parts, and two are always fitted. The trade is cores against clock: the 6747P gives 48 cores at 2.7 GHz and 330 W, the 6767P 64 at 2.4 GHz, and the 6787P 86 at 2.0 GHz, both at 350 W.

  • Each processor supplies 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with bifurcation down to x2, and connects to its partner over as many as four 24 GT/s UPI links.
  • A single CPU heat sink type covers every TDP, and Dell’s thermal matrix clears all three processors at 35°C on HPR Platinum fans. That matrix lists the 6747P at 350 W, against 330 W in the processor table.
  • Dell’s processor table has no turbo column; for all three it lists 6400 MT/s memory and a 4 TB capacity figure, which is the system maximum (16 slots × 128 GB is 2 TB per processor).
  • Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) is among the processor features Dell names for application isolation.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots, sixteen per socket in eight channels of two. The distinctive rule here is that Dell sets minimum memory by GPU count: eight H200 NVL, H100 NVL or RTX Pro 6000 cards need at least 1.5 TB (16 × 96 GB) or 2 TB, and smaller footprints are marked Not Validated.

  • Eight Gaudi 3 cards are validated with 32 × 64 GB, 32 × 96 GB or 128 GB modules; 16 × 96 GB, accepted for eight NVIDIA cards, is not validated with them.
  • A 512 GB build (16 × 32 GB) is validated only with two H200 NVL, H100 NVL or RTX Pro 6000 cards, four or eight L40S, or four L4s.
  • Dell cautions that unvalidated memory and GPU pairings can cause GPU performance loss, PCIe fatal errors, or a failure to power on or reach the operating system.
  • One DIMM per channel keeps 6400 MT/s, so 16 × 128 GB gives 2 TB at full speed; filling all 32 slots drops to 5200 MT/s.
  • The May 2025 spec sheet still quotes 3 TB, with 128 GB modules as a future option; the April 2026 guide lists 128 GB RDIMMs and 4 TB.
04 — Storage

1 drive-bay layout, up to 8 bays

Local storage is a single layout of eight EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe bays, direct-attached, with 122.88 TB as Dell’s ceiling. There are no rear bays, no internal or external RAID controller and no Dell software RAID.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Accelerators plug into a PCIe Base Board (PBB) with four PCIe switches, two under each processor, feeding sixteen full-height, full-length x16 slots numbered 21–36. Double-wide cards use the odd-numbered slots, eight in all, filled from the middle outwards: 25, 27, 29 and 31 first, then 21, 23, 33 and 35. Single-width L4s can occupy all sixteen. Up to 8 × double-wide at up to 600 W (NVIDIA H100 NVL, H200 NVL, L40S, RTX Pro 6000; Intel Gaudi 3) or 16 × single-width L4, with NVLink bridges for H100 NVL (2-way) and H200 NVL (4-way).

Each Xeon 6 processor supplies 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Besides the sixteen internal GPU slots, the rear offers eight full-height, half-length Gen5 x16 slots for adapters of up to 150 W — slots 1–4 on processor 1 and 6–9 on processor 0 — which is one network slot per double-wide GPU in a full build.

  • Dell’s port table lists add-in NICs at 1 × 400GbE, 2 × 200GbE and 2 × 100GbE, plus the B3220 DPU with 2 × 200GbE, without naming adapter models.
  • The B3220 DPU is limited to 30°C ambient on DAC cables and does not support active optical cables; OCP cards of 100Gb and above need 85°C-rated optics or DAC.
  • Only the OCP card in slot 5 can redirect the iDRAC port as a shared NIC.
  • Fitting PCIe devices Dell has not validated, or adding or removing GPUs without consulting Dell, can void the warranty if damage results.
06 — Power & cooling

3 power supplies, 2,400–3,200 W

Eight 73.5 mm supplies in two zones: PSUs 1–2 feed the 1U CPU tray and PSUs 3–8 the 3U GPU zone. Each zone needs at least one unit for standby power, full redundancy means 1+1 plus 3+3, and a system started with one supply halts with an error. Units are 3200 W or 2400 W Titanium, or 3200 W for 277 V AC / HVDC.

  • In Dell’s 3200 W matrix, four supplies (one CPU-zone, three GPU-zone) run every GPU loadout only as non-redundant; the 3+1 layout is unsupported and A/B grid needs all eight.
  • With 2400 W supplies, eight 600 W cards (H200 NVL, RTX Pro 6000 or Gaudi 3) need all eight units in 8+0 or 7+1, not A/B grid, and six H200 NVL or RTX Pro 6000 are also excluded from A/B grid.
  • The 3200 W unit delivers 3200 W at 220.1–240 V AC but 2900 W at 200–220 V; the 2400 W unit falls to 1400 W on 100–120 V. Both use C19 leads, and the 277 V AC / HVDC model uses APP/Saf-D-Grid.
  • Both redundant policies support GPU power braking, and Dell offers no user power cap on this model. Supplies from mixed sub-vendors are not supported.

How the XE7740 compares with its family

The XE7740 is the Intel half of a pair: the XE7745 shares its dimensions, GPU slot layout and two-zone power with AMD EPYC 9005 processors and 24 DIMM slots. For SXM GPUs the range moves to the four-GPU XE8640 and the eight-GPU XE9680 and XE9780, while the 2U R770 takes two double-wide cards.

Eight-card H200 NVL inference server

Eight H200 NVL cards hold 8 × 141 GB = 1,128 GB of GPU memory. Dell documents this loadout both unbridged and with two 4-way NVLink bridges, preferably one group of four per processor; the bridges are not part of this configurator build. 32 × 64 GB of DDR5 is one of the memory layouts Dell validates for eight cards, eight E3.S drives keep model weights local, and a 400GbE adapter links the node to the cluster.

Intel Gaudi 3 fine-tuning node

Gaudi 3 is the non-NVIDIA option on the XE7740: eight 128 GB cards at 600 W, rated for 35°C inlet. Dell validates eight of them with 32 × 64 GB, the layout used here, and the 86-core 6787P provides the most host threads on the list (172 per socket) for data preparation.

Sixteen single-width L4s fill every GPU slot, each drawing 72 W in Dell’s power tables. The 48-core 6747P is the lowest-TDP host (330 W in Dell’s processor table), 1 TB of DDR5 at one DIMM per channel holds 6400 MT/s, and with all eight 2400 W supplies Dell’s matrix supports sixteen L4s in every redundancy mode, 4+4 A/B grid included.

Four RTX Pro 6000 digital-twin host

Digital twins are one of the workloads Dell names for this server. Four RTX Pro 6000 cards (96 GB each) in the middle PCIe slots are rated to 35°C, where other RTX Pro 6000 layouts stop at 30°C. 16 × 96 GB satisfies Dell’s memory table for four cards at 6400 MT/s, and the 277 V AC / HVDC supplies suit halls with that distribution.

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots reach 4 TB with 128 GB modules, running at 5200 MT/s with two per channel. One module per channel keeps 6400 MT/s and gives 2 TB with 128 GB parts. Dell also sets minimums by GPU count: eight H200 NVL, H100 NVL or RTX Pro 6000 cards need at least 1.5 TB.

Which GPUs does the XE7740 support?

Up to eight double-wide PCIe cards at up to 600 W — NVIDIA H100 NVL, H200 NVL, L40S or RTX Pro 6000, or Intel Gaudi 3 — or up to sixteen single-width NVIDIA L4s. They sit on a PCIe Base Board behind four PCIe switches, and double-wide cards go into the four middle odd-numbered slots (25–31) before the outer ones (21, 23, 33, 35).

Does the XE7740 support NVLink?

Yes, through bridges on the NVL cards. H100 NVL pairs use three 2-way bridges each, six for four cards and twelve for eight, while H200 NVL uses one 4-way bridge per four cards. Dell advises bridging only cards under the same processor. There is no NVLink baseboard as in SXM systems such as the XE8640.

Three Intel Xeon 6 6700P P-core models: the 6747P (48 cores, 2.7 GHz, 330 W), 6767P (64 cores, 2.4 GHz, 350 W) and 6787P (86 cores, 2.0 GHz, 350 W). Two are always fitted, and all three are rated for 35°C inlet on HPR Platinum fans.

How many network slots does the XE7740 have for a GPU cluster?

Eight Gen5 x16 full-height, half-length slots for adapters of up to 150 W each, plus one Gen5 x8 OCP 3.0 slot. Dell’s port table lists add-in NICs up to 1 × 400GbE or 2 × 200GbE and a B3220 DPU with 2 × 200GbE, while OCP cards top out at 2 × 100GbE.

What power supplies does the XE7740 need?

Eight hot-plug supplies in two zones: two for the CPU tray and six for the GPU zone, with at least one required in each. Options are 3200 W Titanium (2900 W below 220 V), 2400 W Titanium and 3200 W for 277 V AC or 336 V DC. Eight 600 W GPUs on 2400 W units need all eight supplies and cannot use A/B grid.

How many drives does the XE7740 hold?

Eight EDSFF E3.S Gen5 NVMe SSDs at the front, up to 122.88 TB, plus a BOSS-N1 boot module with two M.2 NVMe drives in RAID 1. There are no rear bays and no PERC or software RAID option.

The XE7745 keeps the same dimensions, GPU slots and power zones but uses two AMD EPYC 9005 processors of up to 192 cores and 24 DIMM slots for 6 TB. Its GPU list adds the AMD Instinct MI350P and RTX Pro 4500 and drops Gaudi 3. The XE7740 has 32 DIMM slots and Intel Xeon 6.
