The ProLiant Compute DL580 Gen12 is HPE’s four-socket Xeon 6 server: up to four 6700P processors, 64 DDR5 slots for 16 TB, twelve PCIe 5.0 slots and 32 front NVMe or E3.S drives in a 4U chassis that can start life with two sockets. This data sheet walks the QuickSpecs through the two- and four-processor slot maps, drive-box rules, memory speeds and M-CRPS power.

01 — Overview

The DL580 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL580 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Four sockets and up to 344 cores: four 86-core 6788P processors, each with four UPI links, in 4U.
  • Sixty-four DIMM slots reach 16 TB of DDR5 with 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, backed by ADDDC and memory mirroring.
  • Start with two processors and add two later — HPE lists the server as field-upgradeable from two to four sockets.
  • Twelve full-height, ¾-length PCIe 5.0 slots on six risers with four processors, with slots 3, 5, 7 and 9 wired x16.
  • Up to 32 front NVMe drives, as U.3 SFF or E3.S, can run direct-attached without a RAID controller.

Watch-outs

  • With two processors only slots 3 to 8 work, and slots 7 and 8 need the 2P Riser Upgrade Cable Kit.
  • The QuickSpecs lists no GPU or accelerator options at all.
  • HPE’s overview pairs 16 TB with 6400 MT/s, but filling 64 slots means two DIMMs per channel, which the processor notes rate at 5200 MT/s.
  • The Universal Media Bay costs a drive box, capping the server at 24 drives; adding a front NS204i-u too leaves one box of eight.
  • The HCC- and XCC-die processors (6728P and above) and some memory configurations carry delayed-availability notes.

Seven Xeon 6 6700P P-core processors are listed, all with four UPI links, DDR5-6400 support and a 512 GB SGX enclave: from the 8-core, 4.0 GHz 6714P at 165 W to the 86-core, 2.0 GHz 6788P at 350 W. HPE’s riser, power and thermal tables cover two- and four-processor builds, always of one model.

  • HPE flags delayed availability for the HCC-die 6728P, 6738P and 6748P and the XCC-die 6768P and 6788P.
  • Each processor gets one High Performance heat-sink kit, configured automatically; HPE’s kit name says “2U” although the chassis is 4U.
  • Direct liquid cooling is a CTO kit of two cold-plate modules and one disconnect module plus a 55 cm quick-disconnect tube set, and it can’t be combined with heat sinks.
  • Four performance fan kits come as standard.
  • Mixing two processor models is not allowed.
03 — Memory

64 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Sixteen DIMM slots hang off each processor — eight DDR5 channels, two slots apiece — for 32 in a two-processor server and 64 in a four-processor one. With 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs that makes 8.0 TB or 16.0 TB. Per HPE’s processor notes, a channel with one DIMM runs at up to 6400 MT/s and a channel with two at 5200 MT/s.

  • Four kits are offered — 64, 96 and 128 GB dual-rank RDIMMs and a 256 GB quad-rank 3DS RDIMM, all DDR5-6400 — as factory-integrated -F21 parts; there are no 16 GB or 32 GB DIMMs.
  • Two readings of the 16 TB speed: the tables need every slot filled, two DIMMs per channel, which the processor notes rate at 5200 MT/s; the overview instead quotes 16 TB at 6400 MT/s with one per channel.
  • ADDDC is enabled by default and may cost performance under some workloads; mirroring provides full memory redundancy.
  • HPE warns that some memory configurations have delayed availability and refers population rules to its memory QuickSpecs.
04 — Storage

4 drive-cage kits, up to 32 bays

Drive cages go in front boxes 1, 3, 4 and 6 — four 8-bay cages for 32 drives — chosen from 8SFF x1 tri-mode, 8SFF x4 tri-mode and 8EDSFF, and E3.S and SFF x4 cages can be mixed. No LFF cage exists for this server. HPE’s drive matrix fixes the boxes, controllers and slots each drive count uses.

  • HPE MR932i-p x32 Lanes PCIe Gen5 SPDM Plug-in Storage Controller — RAID. PCIe plug-in; added in Version 9 (04-May-2026) with its cable kits. The name gives no cache size, and the drive configuration matrices do not list it.
  • HPE Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 (8 External Lanes/No Cache) 12G SAS PCIe Plugin Controller — RAID. PCIe; external SAS; no cache. Overview 'What's New' calls it 'Smart Array E208e-p'.
  • HPE heads its drive matrix “2 or 4 Processor Configurations”, then adds a “4 Processor Exclusive Configurations” heading with no table beneath it. The x2-bandwidth builds use slots 2 and 11, which the two-processor slot map marks N/A.
  • The Universal Media Bay needs Box 1 empty and provides an optical-drive position, a 2SFF cage option, a front DisplayPort and two USB 2.0 ports; with it the drive maximum is 24.
  • A front NS204i-u occupies Box 4, moving that cage to Box 1; if Box 4 holds drives, use the rear enablement kit instead. Front and rear kits can’t be combined, and UMB plus front boot leaves only Box 3.
  • Cable kits are chosen automatically from the cage and riser selections.
  • MR416 cache backup uses a 96 W Smart Storage battery or hybrid capacitor with a 260 mm cable; the 1000 mm DL580 data-retention cable (P80426-B21) is needed only with the mega-cell option.
  • The 2SFF media-bay cage is described as NVMe in one table and as NVMe/SAS/SATA in another.

Each socket has eight DDR5 channels and four UPI links. PCIe slots come in pairs on up to six identical 2x16 risers: two processors enable risers 2 to 4 (slots 3 to 8), four enable all six. HPE warns that x16 cards in x8 slots may run below their best.

  • Two-processor defaults are risers 2 and 3; riser 4 (slots 7 and 8) needs the 2P Riser Upgrade Cable Kit (P80381-B21).
  • Four-processor defaults are risers 3 and 4; risers 2 and 5 need P80380-B21 and risers 1 and 6 need P81004-B21, which the table misprints as P811004-B21 for slot 2.
  • The slot table lists OCP A as embedded and OCP B as optional cabled, while the CTO table calls OCP A optional and OCP B the default; the bus width is printed as “x 81”. x16 enablement kits exist for both slots.
  • Thermal tables restrict high-tier PCIe cards: with two processors, tiers 6 to 8 are confined to slots 3 and 5; with four, tier-8 cards aren’t supported.
  • There is no embedded networking and no default adapter — every order picks an OCP 3.0 or stand-up NIC.
06 — Power & cooling

4 power supplies, 1,500–3,200 W

Power comes from M-CRPS hot-plug supplies: 1500 W, 2400 W or 3200 W Titanium, or a 2200 W −48 V DC unit, for which HPE lists a matching lug kit. A two-processor build takes one or two supplies, a four-processor build two or four, and two different models are never mixed.

  • HPE’s acoustic tests ran four supplies: 1500 W units in the entry and typical builds, 2400 W units in both performance builds.
  • No input-voltage or BTU table is printed for these supplies; HPE points to its Power Advisor for sizing.
  • Declared sound power is 5.2 to 5.8 B at idle and 5.3 to 6.0 B operating, with 38 to 46 dBA at the bystander position.

How the DL580 Gen12 compares with its family

The DL580 Gen12 is HPE’s four-socket Xeon 6 rack server. The DL560 Gen11 packs four 4th Gen Xeon Scalable sockets into 2U, while the DL380 Gen12, DL380a Gen12 and DL360 Gen12 are Xeon 6 servers with up to two sockets. Each bar is taken from that model’s spec file.

09 — Use cases

Three builds that suit the DL580 Gen12

Three DL580 Gen12 builds, made only of options our configurator accepts for this server, each opening pre-filled. HPE lists seven processors, but our configurator currently offers only the 86-core 6788P and places one of each drive cage and two supplies, so a different processor, extra cages and riser cable kits are set on the quote.

Populating every one of the 64 slots with 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs reaches the 16 TB ceiling, at two DIMMs per channel (5200 MT/s by HPE’s processor notes). Four 86-core 6788P processors provide 344 cores, and HPE names in-memory work such as SAP HANA among this server’s intended uses. Local U.3 NVMe on VROC holds logs and data.

Direct-attached NVMe needs the 8SFF x4 cage, specified on the quote. HPE notes delayed availability for some memory configurations and for the XCC-die 6788P. Four-processor builds may run two or four supplies; HPE’s Performance 2 acoustic build, also four 6788P, used four 2400 W units, which we set on the quote if wanted.

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen12?

16.0 TB with four processors, filling all 64 slots with 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, or 8.0 TB with two processors and 32 slots. Full population means two DIMMs per channel, rated at 5200 MT/s; at one per channel and 6400 MT/s a four-processor server tops out at 8 TB (32 × 256 GB). HPE’s overview line pairs 16 TB with 6400 MT/s at one DIMM per channel, whereas its memory table lists both speeds against the 64-DIMM figure.

Which processors does the DL580 Gen12 take?

Two or four identical Intel Xeon 6 6700P P-core processors. HPE lists seven, from the 8-core 6714P at 4.0 GHz and 165 W to the 86-core 6788P at 2.0 GHz and 350 W. HPE’s tables don’t cover one- or three-processor builds.

Can I buy the DL580 Gen12 with two processors and upgrade later?

Yes — HPE describes it as field-upgradeable from two to four sockets. A two-processor server has 32 DIMM slots, six working PCIe slots (3 to 8) and one or two supplies; processors three and four bring the other 32 slots and risers 1, 5 and 6.

How many drives does the DL580 Gen12 hold?

Up to 32 front drives — SFF (x1 tri-mode or x4) or E3.S — in four 8-bay cages, or 16 E3.S plus 16 SFF x4. There is no LFF option. The Universal Media Bay lowers the maximum to 24, and the media bay plus a front boot device leaves 8.

Does the DL580 Gen12 support GPUs?

HPE’s DL580 Gen12 QuickSpecs lists no GPU or accelerator options; its thermal tables only restrict which slots high-tier PCIe cards may use. HPE describes the 4U DL380a Gen12 as its accelerator-optimised model, with up to 10 double-wide GPUs.

How many PCIe slots does the DL580 Gen12 have?

Twelve full-height, ¾-length PCIe 5.0 slots with four processors, or six (slots 3 to 8) with two. All sit on 2x16 risers; slots 3, 5, 7 and 9 are electrically x16 and the rest x8. Two rear OCP 3.0 slots come on top.

Which power supplies does the DL580 Gen12 use?

M-CRPS hot-plug Titanium supplies of 1500 W, 2400 W or 3200 W, or a 2200 W −48 V DC unit, one model per server. Two-processor systems take one or two supplies and four-processor systems two or four.

How big, heavy and loud is the DL580 Gen12?

It measures 17.47 cm high, 44.78 cm wide and 80.26 cm deep, the depth running from the front ear to the rear I/O wall without supplies. It weighs 28.79–37.24 kg with two processors or 38.77–48.75 kg with four, and HPE declares 5.2 to 5.8 B at idle and up to 6.0 B operating.

How does the DL580 Gen12 compare with the DL560 Gen11?

By the two QuickSpecs, the DL560 Gen11 fits four 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors into 2U, with 64 DIMM slots (16 TB at 4800 MT/s), up to six PCIe Gen5 slots, up to 24 SFF drives and iLO 6. The DL580 Gen12 takes 4U but moves to Xeon 6, DDR5-6400, twelve PCIe 5.0 slots, 32 NVMe or E3.S bays and iLO 7.

Is the HPE ProLiant Compute DL580 Gen12 end of life?

The configure-to-order server is current in version 11 of HPE’s QuickSpecs (3 August 2026), which gives no end-of-sale or end-of-support date. Warranty is three years of parts, labour and on-site service; look up HPE’s dates in our end-of-life checker as they are announced.
