HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen11Specifications, configurations & comparisons

The ProLiant DL560 Gen11 packs four 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors, 64 DDR5 slots and up to 24 drives into 2U. Its QuickSpecs read as a set of trade-offs rather than one specification: the air- or liquid-cooled chassis chosen at order decides which processors a four-socket build can use, and HPE’s thermal tables cap the inlet temperature for each mix of drives, DIMMs and cards.

01 — Overview

The DL560 Gen11 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the DL560 Gen11 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • 240 cores from four 60-core Platinum 8490H processors, with sixteen DIMM slots per socket, in a 2U chassis.
  • Up to 24 front SFF drives on tri-mode or NVMe cages, or 24 E3.S NVMe drives in a four-socket build, with a front media bay option in Box 1.
  • Two processors can run on their own: HPE lists a 2P air baffle and a UPI pass-through kit, and all nine processors are supported in the two-socket air-cooled build.
  • Five Flex Slot supplies — four AC units from an 800 W Platinum on 100–240 VAC to the 1800–2200 W Titanium, and one −48 VDC model — in 1+1, 2+2 or 3+1 redundancy.
  • Two risers of x8/x16/x8 or x16/x16/x16 give six full-height PCIe 5.0 slots, with two OCP 3.0 slots beside them.

Watch-outs

  • Only nine processors are listed, all 4th Gen H-series; the QuickSpecs offer no 5th Gen Xeon Scalable or Xeon 6 option.
  • Cooling is fixed at order and cannot be converted later: four-socket builds of the 6434H, 8444H, 8460H, 8468H and 8490H need the liquid-cooled chassis, leaving the 6416H, 6418H, 6448H and 8450H for four-socket air cooling.
  • The 16 TB ceiling depends on a 256 GB DIMM that appears only in HPE’s support matrix; the largest kit in the ordering lists is 128 GB, which makes 8 TB across 64 slots.
  • Thermal tables set the maximum inlet by processor, storage, DIMM size and network card — down to 20 °C for some four-socket builds — and many of HPE’s adapter tables allow 24 SFF drives on four air-cooled sockets only with the 6416H or 6418H.
  • The liquid-cooling heat sink kit is factory-fit only, has no leak detection and carries a five-year maximum usage limit, after which HPE requires its replacement.

02 — Processors

9 supported processors, mapped

HPE lists nine processors, all 4th Gen Xeon Scalable H-series: five Platinum (8490H, 8468H, 8460H, 8450H, 8444H) and four Gold (6448H, 6434H, 6418H, 6416H), from 8 to 60 cores and 165 W to 350 W. A server runs two or four of the same model, and whether a four-socket build can use a given part depends on the cooling chosen at order.

  • In two-socket builds all nine processors are air-cooled; in four-socket builds the 6416H, 6418H, 6448H and 8450H are air-cooled and the 6434H, 8444H, 8460H, 8468H and 8490H need the Liquid Cooling CTO (P55182-B21).
  • UPI runs at 16 GT/s over four links in a two-socket build and three links in a four-socket build.
  • A two-socket server must be ordered with the 2P air baffle (P55550-B21) and the 2P UPI pass-through kit (P54806-B21); a 4P CPU mezzanine kit (P54803-B21) also appears among the key options.
  • Heat sinks: P48818-B21 for two-socket air cooling, P48905-B21 for four-socket air cooling, and the factory-fitted P54791-B21 kit for four-socket liquid cooling.
  • HPE notes that maximum memory per processor depends on the processor model and the storage layout, which its support matrix sets out.

64 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Each of the four processors has eight DDR5 channels with two slots apiece — 16 per socket and 64 in all. HPE rates the DDR5-4800 kits for 4800 MT/s at one DIMM per channel, falling to 4400 MT/s when a channel carries two. Its 16.0 TB maximum (64 × 256 GB) is printed at 4800 MT/s, although 64 DIMMs means two per channel, where the same document gives 4400 MT/s.

  • Per processor, HPE’s population table runs through 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 modules — other counts lack Intel qualification — and the ordering notes ask for an even number of DIMMs.
  • The ordering lists offer 16, 32, 64, 96 and 128 GB RDIMMs; the 256 GB part (P43337-B21) and a second 128 GB part (P43334-B21) are named only as support-matrix columns.
  • On the liquid-cooled CTO, a 128 GB configuration has to use the quad-rank P63345-B21 module.
  • 96 GB modules go in at half or full population on every processor and cannot be mixed with other sizes.
  • HPE’s CPU/storage/memory support matrix lowers the maximum inlet temperature as DIMM size and drive count rise, reaching 20 °C in some four-socket rows.

4 drive-cage kits, up to 24 bays

The front has three drive boxes. The base 8 SFF chassis grows to 24 SFF with tri-mode x1 or NVMe x4 cages, or takes 12-bay EDSFF cages — up to 16 E3.S drives with two processors and 24 with four. Boxes fill in a set order: Box 3 first on two-socket systems, Box 2 first on four-socket ones, with Box 1 last.

Three 8SFF U.3 cages across Boxes 1–3; x1 tri-mode and x4 NVMe cages cannot be mixed. On four air-cooled sockets many adapter tables allow it only with the 6416H or 6418H (the DIMM matrix also shows a 20 °C row for the 250 W parts), and the adapter tables mark it not supported on the liquid-cooled model.

With liquid cooling and front NS204i-u, Media Bay not supported.
  • Tri-mode controllers are the uncached MR216i-p and MR216i-o, the MR408i-o (4 GB), the MR416i-p and MR416i-o (8 GB) and the SR932i-p (8 GB), which needs an x16 riser slot; cached controllers need a battery or hybrid capacitor.
  • The base controller is embedded hybrid RAID with eight SATA ports; Intel VROC Premium adds NVMe RAID 0/1/5/10 in UEFI mode, and the E208e-p connects external SAS.
  • Direct-attached and tri-mode-controlled drives cannot be mixed, and HPE’s tri-mode controllers do not support PE80xx NVMe drives.
  • The NS204i-u boot device mounts at the front between the fan cage and the drive boxes (not hot-pluggable) or at the rear in slot 4 of the second riser (hot-pluggable); a front boot device on a liquid-cooled server rules out the media bay.
  • A drive-less build still needs an x4 cage and a direct-attach cable, with no controller.
  • HPE’s maximum-storage table gives 368.64 TB for 24 × 15.36 TB SAS or NVMe SSDs and 57.6 TB for 24 × 2.4 TB SAS hard drives.

GPU support is narrow. Double-wide cards can only sit in slot 2 of the primary riser and slot 5 of the secondary, at up to 10.5 inches long, with the GPU Enablement Kit (P54816-B21). The NVIDIA L40 48 GB is the one accelerator with an option part number; HPE’s thermal table allows it at up to 30 °C with a single drive box, 30 °C or less with two, and not at all with 24 SFF drives or on the liquid-cooled four-socket model. A second table is headed H100 80GB but carries no option part, and the change log records a graphics-accelerator SKU removed in version 22. • With one riser the factory fits it in the primary position; with two, the x16/x16/x16 riser goes in the primary position.
  • x16 cards fitted in x8 slots may see reduced performance.
  • OCP at x16 needs the OCP x16 to Motherboard Enablement Kit (P55322-B21) on two-socket builds or the Mezzanine Board kit (P55324-B21) on four-socket builds.
  • Some network adapters must go in riser 1 or in OCP2, and each carries its own inlet limits in HPE’s adapter tables.
  • Rear ports are VGA, two USB 3.2, the 1 Gb iLO port and an optional serial port (cable kit P48824-B21); the media bay’s front DisplayPort and the rear VGA cannot be active together.

Four builds that suit the DL560 Gen11

Four DL560 Gen11 builds from options our configurator permits on this server. Each opens pre-filled with one drive cage and two supplies; where HPE’s rules call for more cages, more supplies or a particular cooling model, the lines say so and we set it on the quote.

In-memory database

8 TB four-socket, liquid-cooled

Four 60-core Platinum 8490H processors and 64 × 128 GB RDIMMs give 240 cores and 8 TB, the most memory the ordering lists can supply. At 350 W the 8490H needs the liquid-cooled chassis in four-socket form, and eight direct-attached NVMe drives in one box hold logs and data files.

  • 4 × Xeon-Platinum 8490H60 cores @ 1.9 GHz, 350 W each
  • 64 × 128 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 8 TB, two per channel (4400 MT/s); quad-rank P63345-B21 on the liquid-cooled CTO
  • 8 × 7.68 TB U.3 NVMe in one x4 cage, direct-attached
  • Intel VROC NVMe RAID (licence quoted separately)
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57608 2 × 100 GbE QSFP112 OCP3
  • 2 × 1800–2200 W Flex Slot Titanium — up to four supported; size with HPE Power Advisor
  • Liquid Cooling CTO (P55182-B21) with the P54791-B21 heat sink kit
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

The liquid-cooling kit is factory-installed, has no leak detection and must be replaced after five years of operation. HPE’s liquid-cooled matrix allows 96 GB and 128 GB modules up to 30 °C inlet with one 8 SFF box. Four-socket storage starts in Box 2.

Virtualisation & consolidation

Four-socket air-cooled consolidation host

Four 32-core Gold 6448H processors — the highest core count HPE allows in a four-socket air-cooled build — give 128 cores, with 32 × 64 GB RDIMMs (2 TB) at one DIMM per channel for 4800 MT/s. SAS SSDs on a cached tri-mode controller hold the VM datastores.

  • 4 × Xeon-Gold 6448H32 cores @ 2.4 GHz, 250 W each
  • 32 × 64 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 2 TB, one per channel
  • 8 × 3.84 TB SAS SSD in an 8SFF tri-mode cage — a second cage and eight more drives set on the quote for 16
  • HPE MR416i-p Gen11 tri-mode controller, 8 GB cache, with battery or hybrid capacitor
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57504 4 × 10/25 GbE SFP28 OCP3
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 VAC)
  • Air Cooling CTO (P55181-B21) with P48905-B21 heat sinks
  • Windows Server 2025 Datacenter
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

In HPE’s four-socket air matrix (processors up to 250 W), two 8 SFF boxes allow 30 °C inlet with 64 GB or smaller DIMMs. An air-cooled server cannot later be converted to liquid cooling.

Two-socket build with two L40 cards

Two 48-core Platinum 8468H processors run on their own with the 2P baffle and UPI pass-through kits, leaving riser slots 2 and 5 for two L40 GPUs. Memory is 1 TB from sixteen 64 GB modules, one per channel, and eight E3.S drives fill a 12-bay EDSFF cage to its two-socket limit.

  • 2 × Xeon-Platinum 8468H48 cores @ 2.1 GHz, 330 W each
  • 2 × NVIDIA L40 48 GB in slots 2 and 5, with the GPU Enablement Kit (P54816-B21)
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 1 TB, one per channel
  • 8 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe in a 12EDSFF cage (eight per box on two sockets)
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25 GbE SFP28 OCP3
  • 2 × 1800–2200 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • 2P air baffle (P55550-B21) and UPI pass-through (P54806-B21) kits
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

HPE’s L40 table allows 30 °C inlet with one EDSFF box on a two-socket air-cooled server and 25 °C with two; the card is not supported on the liquid-cooled four-socket model. Each GPU needs a riser in its position.

Database & storage-heavy

24-SFF four-socket database server

Filling all three boxes gives 24 SFF bays for database files and logs. Many of HPE’s adapter tables allow that on four air-cooled sockets only with the 165 W 6416H or the 185 W 6418H, so this build uses four 24-core 6418H processors (96 cores), an SR932i-p controller and 32 × 64 GB of memory.

  • 4 × Xeon-Gold 6418H24 cores @ 2.1 GHz, 185 W each
  • 32 × 64 GB DDR5-4800 RDIMM — 2 TB, one per channel
  • 8 × 7.68 TB SAS SSD in one tri-mode cage — two more cages and 16 more drives set on the quote for 24
  • HPE SR932i-p Gen11 tri-mode controller, 8 GB wide cache, in an x16 riser slot
  • NS204i-u NVMe boot device
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25 GbE SFP28 OCP3
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 VAC)
  • Air Cooling CTO (P55181-B21)
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Basic

On four air-cooled sockets HPE’s adapter tables give this layout 20–30 °C or no support, depending on the card, while the DIMM matrix lists 35 °C for it with 64 GB modules on the 6416H and 6418H; the adapter tables mark it not supported on the liquid-cooled model. Cached controllers need a battery or hybrid capacitor.

12 — FAQ

DL560 Gen11 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen11?

HPE quotes 16.0 TB from 64 × 256 GB RDIMMs. That 256 GB module appears only in the support matrix, not in the ordering lists, whose largest kit is 128 GB — 8 TB across the 64 slots. A second DIMM on a channel brings the speed down from 4800 MT/s to 4400 MT/s.

How many processors does the DL560 Gen11 take?

Two or four of the same model, chosen from nine 4th Gen Xeon Scalable H-series parts of 8 to 60 cores. With four processors, the 6416H, 6418H, 6448H and 8450H can be air-cooled, while the 6434H, 8444H, 8460H, 8468H and 8490H need the liquid-cooled chassis.

Can the DL560 Gen11 run with only two processors?

Yes. Two-socket builds use the 2P air baffle and UPI pass-through kits, run all nine processors air-cooled over four UPI links, and populate the 32 DIMM slots belonging to those two processors. They are limited to 16 E3.S drives, against 24 with four sockets.

How many drives does the DL560 Gen11 hold?

Up to 24 SFF drives in three 8-bay boxes, or up to 24 E3.S NVMe drives with four processors (16 with two). A Universal Media Bay in Box 1 adds two SFF or NVMe drives and front ports. On four air-cooled sockets, many of HPE’s adapter tables allow 24 SFF only with the 6416H or 6418H.

Does the DL560 Gen11 support GPUs?

Two double-wide cards can go in slots 2 and 5 with the GPU Enablement Kit, at up to 10.5 inches long. The NVIDIA L40 48 GB is the only accelerator with an option number, and HPE’s thermal table rules it out of liquid-cooled four-socket and 24-SFF builds.

How many PCIe slots does the DL560 Gen11 have?

Up to six PCIe 5.0 full-height slots on two risers, each x8/x16/x8 or x16/x16/x16, with a pair of OCP 3.0 slots alongside. No network port is built in, so every order includes an OCP or PCIe adapter.

Which power supplies does the DL560 Gen11 use?

Two to four matching Flex Slot supplies in 1+1, 2+2 or 3+1 redundancy: 800 W Platinum or 1000 W Titanium on 100–240 VAC, 1600 W Platinum or 1800–2200 W Titanium on 200–240 VAC, or a 1600 W −48 VDC unit.

How big and heavy is the DL560 Gen11?

The SFF chassis measures 8.75 × 43.3 × 80.6 cm. HPE gives 21.08 to 38.02 kg for air-cooled builds and 26.83 to 36.93 kg for liquid-cooled builds.

How does the DL560 Gen11 compare with the DL580 Gen12?

Going by the two QuickSpecs, the DL580 Gen12 is a 4U server for Intel Xeon 6 P-core processors, field-upgradeable from two to four sockets, with 64 slots for 16 TB (6400 MT/s at one DIMM per channel, 5200 MT/s at two), up to 32 SFF or EDSFF drives and iLO 7. The DL560 Gen11 fits four 4th Gen H-series processors in 2U with DDR5-4800, 24 front bays and iLO 6.

Is the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen11 end of life?

Version 33 of the QuickSpecs (3 August 2026) sets no end-of-sale or end-of-support date. What its change log removes are options — SSD families, InfiniBand adapters and tape drives. Our end-of-life checker will show dates if HPE announces them.
