01 — Overview

The ML350 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the ML350 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Up to 86 P-cores per socket, 172 per server, with 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes per processor and UPI running at 24 GT/s.
  • Memory runs at 6400 MT/s with one DIMM per channel or 5200 MT/s with two, reaching 8.0 TB on 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs.
  • Drive cages are chosen one at a time: tri-mode SFF and dual-mode LFF cages mix freely, and either can sit beside a 12-bay E3.S or an x4 NVMe cage, three cages in all.
  • Twenty-four NVMe SSDs at PCIe 5.0 x2 each, from three x4 NVMe cages on x2 cable kits.
  • The Gen5 x16 RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell joins the L40, L40S, L4 and RTX A1000 on the GPU list.

Watch-outs

  • HPE ties every build to a 30 °C, 27 °C or 25 °C ambient-temperature tracking SKU, and the E3.S cage forces the 25 °C option.
  • An internal LTO drive limits the server to two drive cages, and any NS204i-u boot device must then use the rear enablement kit.
  • Here the MR932i-p runs NVMe SSDs only, in the x4 NVMe or E3.S cages — no hard drives, no SATA SSDs.
  • HPE’s performance test builds declare 4.9 B at idle and 5.0 B operating, against 4.0 B and 4.1–4.2 B for the entry builds.
  • From 225 W a processor needs the Performance heat sink; from 300 W — and with 256 GB DIMMs, E3.S, 200 Gb-plus networking or any GPU — both extra fan kits as well.

  • The highest base clock is the 6725P’s 3.7 GHz (16 cores, 235 W), added to the QuickSpecs in a later revision.
  • HPE’s table gives the 32-core 6745P 336 MB of L3 cache and the 48-core 6747P 288 MB; figures shown as printed.
  • Option kits hold the processor only; heat sinks and fans are ordered separately.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Eight DDR5 channels per processor, each with two RDIMM slots: 32 slots when both sockets are filled, 16 with one. HPE’s rating is 6400 MT/s for a single DIMM per channel, dropping to 5200 MT/s once both slots are used — the speed of the full 8.0 TB build.

  • Kits are 32, 64, 96 and 128 GB RDIMMs plus a 256 GB 3DS RDIMM, all rated DDR5-6400.
  • Each socket takes 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs.
  • The 64, 96, 128 and 256 GB sizes can’t be combined with any other capacity, and x4 and x8 DIMMs never mix.
  • A population note limits 16 GB DIMMs to one per channel, though no 16 GB kit is offered.
  • Advanced ECC is the listed protection, and the option list contains no MRDIMMs.

4 drive-cage kits, up to 24 bays

The Gen12 comes as one configure-to-order chassis with no drive cage fitted. You add up to three from four types — 8SFF x1 tri-mode, 4LFF, 8SFF x4 NVMe and 12EDSFF — plus a slim DVD bay; HPE’s default Smart Chassis starts with one tri-mode 8SFF box and an MR408i-o. The layouts are the single-type maximums; the kit chart lists each cage.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

Five NVIDIA GPUs are supported, one model per server, each requiring the Redundant and Second CPU fan kits. HPE rates every card against drive-cage count: the L4 and RTX A1000 are rated at 30 °C with two or three cages but, as printed, only with processors of 190 W or less when one cage is fitted; the RTX PRO 4500 holds 30 °C with one cage; and the L40 slips from 27 °C with one cage to 23 °C with three unless HPE’s two-GPU limited setup is used. Up to 8 × RTX A1000, 4 × L40, L4 or RTX PRO 4500, or 2 × L40S (slot 2 and/or 6 on an x16 riser).

  • The secondary riser kits are interchangeable with the primary kit; the 2x16 primary version is a factory-only option.
  • The tertiary riser uses two of processor 2’s MCIO connectors, and without processor 2 its slots do nothing.
  • A card in OCP B needs the OCP B Enablement Kit; an x16 NIC in OCP A may need the OCP A kit. HPE’s OCP cable kits run x16 from processor 1 to OCP A, and x8 from either processor or x16 from processor 2 to OCP B.
  • InfiniBand adapters and the x16-only Ethernet cards need a 2x16 riser.
  • Ethernet or InfiniBand at 200 Gb or faster also calls for the Redundant Fan Kit.
  • There is no embedded NIC; configure-to-order builds default to a Broadcom BCM5719 four-port 1 Gb OCP3 adapter.

How the ML350 Gen12 compares with its family

The ML350 Gen12 is the Xeon 6 model in HPE’s ProLiant tower line. The ML350 Gen11 before it runs 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable; the ML110 Gen11 and ML30 Gen11 are single-socket towers. For a rack, the DL380 Gen12 is the two-socket Xeon 6 2U and the DL340 Gen12 the single-socket one. Bars are drawn from each spec file.

Four builds that suit the ML350 Gen12

Four ML350 Gen12 builds made from options the configurator accepts on this tower; each link opens the configurator pre-filled. It sets one of each chosen cage and two supplies, so additional cages, riser, fan, enablement and cable kits and the ambient-temperature SKU are set on the quote.

Virtualisation

64-core Xeon 6 virtualisation tower

Two 32-core 6730P processors — the part HPE uses in its performance SFF acoustic build — and 1 TB of DDR5-6400 at one DIMM per channel host a mid-sized VMware estate. The storage copies HPE’s default Smart Chassis, a tri-mode 8SFF box behind an MR408i-o in OCP A, filled with 7.68 TB SAS SSDs.

  • 2 × Xeon 6730P32 cores @ 2.5 GHz, 250 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB at 6400 MT/s
  • 8 × 7.68 TB SAS SSD in one tri-mode 8SFF box
  • MR408i-o 4 GB cache controller in OCP A
  • Broadcom BCM57414 2 × 10/25GbE OCP3 in OCP B
  • 2 × 1000 W Flex Slot Titanium
  • VMware vSphere 8 Essentials Plus

The 250 W processors need the Performance heat sink (P72359-B21), the second processor adds the Second CPU Fan Kit, and OCP B needs its enablement kit; the ambient-temperature tracking SKU for your room is chosen on the quote.

All-flash

24-drive NVMe analytics and file server

Three x4 NVMe cages on x2 cable kits take 24 NVMe SSDs; with 7.68 TB drives that is 184.32 TB raw. Direct-attached, the third cage set needs processor 2, which two 36-core 6736P processors at 205 W supply, and Intel VROC Premium adds RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 without a controller card.

  • 2 × Xeon 6736P36 cores @ 2 GHz, 205 W each
  • 8 × 7.68 TB NVMe U.3 in one 8SFF cage — 61.44 TB raw as linked
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • Intel VROC Premium (RAID 0/1/5/10)
  • NS204i-u v2 boot device
  • Intel E810-CQDA2 2 × 100GbE OCP3
  • 2 × 1600 W Flex Slot Platinum (200–240 V AC)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (3-year)

The link opens with one generic 8SFF cage; all three 8SFF x4 NVMe cages (P72316-B21) and their x2 cable kits are specified on the quote. HPE doesn’t allow x2 and x4 kits, or direct-attach and controller kits, in one server.

Backup & tape

Disk-plus-tape backup tower

With an internal LTO drive HPE allows two drive cages, so this build pairs a 4LFF box of 26 TB SAS drives (104 TB raw) as a disk landing zone with a tri-mode 8SFF box of SATA SSDs. One 16-core 6515P at 150 W stays below the Performance heat-sink threshold, and a 16-drive MR216i-o has ports for the disks and the tape.

  • 1 × Xeon 6515P16 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 150 W
  • 4 × 26 TB 3.5-inch SAS HDD in a 4LFF box — 104 TB raw
  • 4 × 1.92 TB SATA SSD in a tri-mode 8SFF box
  • 8 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 256 GB
  • MR216i-o controller in OCP A
  • Broadcom BCM57416 2 × 10GbE BASE-T OCP3
  • 2 × 800 W Flex Slot Platinum
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard

Add the LTO drive, tertiary riser (P79317-B21), LTO cable kit and Second CPU Fan Kit on the quote. With tape fitted, a boot device must use the rear NS204i-u enablement kit, and the front kit is ruled out.

GPU compute

Four RTX PRO 4500 GPU tower

Four 32 GB RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell cards run at PCIe Gen5 x16, two per 2x16 riser, for 128 GB of GPU memory, and 512 GB of DDR5 respects HPE’s two-to-one memory guideline. Two 16-core 6517P processors at 190 W also meet the 190 W processor limit that HPE attaches to several ratings in its GPU inlet table.

  • 2 × Xeon 6517P16 cores @ 3.2 GHz, 190 W each
  • 4 × NVIDIA RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell 32 GB
  • 16 × 32 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 512 GB
  • 4 × 3.84 TB NVMe U.3 in the tri-mode 8SFF box
  • MR408i-o controller in OCP A
  • Intel E810-XXVDA2 2 × 10/25GbE OCP3
  • 2 × 1800–2200 W Flex Slot Titanium (200–240 V AC)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Every card needs the ML350 12(8+4)-pin/16-pin power cable kit and both system fan kits; HPE recommends the External GPU Fan Kit, which covers the cards’ DisplayPorts. With one drive cage the RTX PRO 4500 is supported at 30 °C inlet.

12 — FAQ

ML350 Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen12?

8.0 TB, from 32 × 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs at two per channel, which HPE rates at 5200 MT/s. Staying at one DIMM per channel for the full 6400 MT/s leaves 16 slots — 2 TB with 128 GB kits or 4 TB with 256 GB. A one-processor server has 16 slots in total.

Which processors does the ML350 Gen12 support?

Up to two matching Intel Xeon 6 P-core processors from the 6500P and 6700P series. HPE lists 18, with 8 to 86 cores and TDPs between 135 W and 350 W; a pair of 86-core 6787P gives the server 172 cores.

How many drives does the ML350 Gen12 hold?

Up to 24 SFF drives (tri-mode, or NVMe on x2 cable kits), 12 LFF or 12 E3.S, in at most three cages. SFF and LFF boxes can be combined, and the E3.S cage may share the front with them. An internal tape drive lowers the limit to two cages.

Can the ML350 Gen12 be converted to a rack server?

Yes — the optional Tower-to-Rack kit (P47394-B21) lets it occupy 5U in a standard rack. HPE doesn’t fit the kit in the factory; it arrives as a standalone option.

Which GPUs fit the ML350 Gen12?

One of five NVIDIA models per server: eight RTX A1000, four L40, L4 or RTX PRO 4500, or two L40S in slot 2 and/or slot 6 on an x16 riser. All need the Redundant and Second CPU fan kits, and the x16 cards need 2x16 risers holding two cards each.

What is the ambient-temperature tracking SKU on the ML350 Gen12?

HPE asks for the highest inlet temperature the server will face — 30 °C, 27 °C or 25 °C — and configures cooling to suit. Its default Smart Chassis assumes 30 °C, and choosing the 12EDSFF cage requires the 25 °C SKU.

How loud is the ML350 Gen12?

For its entry LFF and SFF builds HPE declares 4.0 B (28–29 dBA) at idle; the performance builds reach 4.9 B at idle and 5.0 B (37–38 dBA) operating. Operating mode is measured at 50 % of processor TDP in a 23 ± 2 °C room.

Which power supplies does the ML350 Gen12 use?

It holds up to two hot-plug Flex Slot supplies, always a matched pair. HPE lists five: an 1800–2200 W and a 1000 W Titanium, a 1600 W and an 800 W Platinum, and a 1600 W model for −48 V DC. The two biggest AC units are high-line only, and configure-to-order servers ship with no power cords.

How does the ML350 Gen12 differ from the ML350 Gen11?

Comparing the two QuickSpecs: the Gen11 uses 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable up to 64 cores with DDR5-4800 or 5600 and iLO 6, sold as separate LFF and SFF chassis. The Gen12 takes Xeon 6 P-core parts up to 86 cores, runs DDR5-6400 (its 8.0 TB maximum is rated at 5200 MT/s, where Gen11’s is 4400) and iLO 7, and drops the 500 W supply and A16 GPU while adding the RTX PRO 4500. The tower still measures 46.2 × 17.4 × 71.2 cm.

Is the HPE ProLiant Compute ML350 Gen12 end of life?

No end-of-sale or end-of-support date appears in HPE’s QuickSpecs (version 17, 8 September 2026), which lists the server for configure-to-order; its obsolete entries are individual drives, memory and adapters. Warranty is three years parts, labour and on-site, and our end-of-life checker will carry HPE’s dates when announced.
