PowerEdge R450 end of life

Support for a PowerEdge R450 ends unit by unit, with the warranty or contract on its Service Tag; Dell publishes no model-wide end-of-sale or end-of-service-life date for PowerEdge servers. This 1U two-socket server with 16 DIMM slots, for which Dell lists no NVMe drive option, still appears in Dell's August 2026 iDRAC9 release. What comes next is less clear: no R460 appears in Dell's 16G iDRAC9 list or its Windows Server matrix.

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the PowerEdge R450 stands today

Dell's hardware EOL list (KB 000185734, at 2 October 2026) has no R450 row at all. That fits what Dell staff said in an R550 thread on its community forum: in February 2025, a member of Dell's community staff wrote that Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates for PowerEdge lines as of about the 13th generation. The third-party tracker checked gives no date either: none of the 13,579 EOSL URLs in the sitemaps of Park Place Technologies (whose library now includes the former Service Express database) is an R450, and the old Service Express R450 address redirects to a PowerEdge family page that lists no 15G model. On the sales side, Dell's UK store URL for the R450 returned a 302 redirect to the Dell UK homepage on 8 October 2026; without a published end-of-sale date, that shows only that the R450 is no longer sold online.

To get a real date, work from the unit. Look for the Service Tag where the R450 Installation and Service Manual puts it: on the front information tag, on the Mini Enterprise Service Tag (MEST) label at the back, or on a label on the left wall of the chassis. Dell KB 000132024 explains that typing it into Dell's contract services page returns the warranty status and expiration date. Renewals are requested through Dell's extend-warranty form, but not in every country, and an R450 bought through a reseller partner may need renewing through that reseller.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell ties support end dates to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The Service Tag is on the information tag at the front of the system, on the Mini Enterprise Service Tag (MEST) label at the rear, and on a label on the left wall of the chassis (see 'Locating the Express Service Code and Service Tag' in the R450 Installation and Service Manual, https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r450_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see the warranty status and expiration date (Dell KB 000132024, https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/000132024). Renewals are requested at https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell says warranty renewals are not available in all countries, and units bought through a reseller partner may need to be renewed through that reseller.

What still works after Dell support ends

Lapsed cover does not lock an R450 out of updates: Dell's firmware knowledge base article, last modified 31 August 2026, states that drivers and firmware for all Dell servers can be downloaded free from Dell Support, and the iDRAC9 7.30.30.54 security-fix release places the R450 among its supported 15th-generation servers. How long 15G stays in iDRAC9 releases is not published. Dell recorded the end of iDRAC9 firmware for 14G in the release notes rather than a dated notice, naming 7.00.00.183 as the last release for 14G, and no Dell date for ending iDRAC9 maintenance on 15G has been found, so check that note in each new iDRAC9 release. On hardware, a renewed Dell warranty covers repairs or replacement parts for Dell-branded hardware, offered per Service Tag with no model-wide maximum term published.

  • Dell's firmware KB says: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' So R450 BIOS, iDRAC and component firmware can be downloaded without an active warranty or contract (KB last modified 31 Aug 2026). (dell.com)
  • Dell recorded the end of iDRAC9 firmware for 14G in the iDRAC9 release notes, not in a separate dated notice. The current notes (7.30.30.54, Rev A00, August 2026) say: 'This release only supports Dell PowerEdge 15th and 16th generation servers... The last release that supported 14G servers is iDRAC9 version 7.00.00.183.' For the R450, check that note in each new iDRAC9 release. (dl.dell.com)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Dell warranty renewal (per Service Tag) — Dell says warranties 'can be renewed to cover Dell-branded hardware repairs or replacement parts'. 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and reseller-bought units may need to renew through the reseller. Dell publishes no model-wide maximum term. (dell.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R450

Start an R450 schedule with the drives. Dell lists four 3.5-inch hot-swap SAS/SATA bays, four 3.5-inch 'chip SATA' bays for HDDs or SSDs, or eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA bays, and lists no NVMe option. Controllers run from S150 software RAID through the PERC H345, H355, H745 and H755 and the HBA355i, with BOSS-S1 for M.2 boot and the PERC H840 or HBA355e for external storage. Memory is 16 RDIMM slots up to 1 TB at up to 2933 MT/s, and processors are 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable parts of up to 24 cores each.

Power and cooling need the same precision. Up to two PSUs come from three types: 600 W and 800 W Platinum units (100-240 V AC or 240 V DC) and an 1100 W -48 to -60 V DC unit. Dell's spec sheet lists up to seven cold-swap fans in Standard or High performance SLVR versions, so record which fan type is fitted. Name the iDRAC9 extras in scope too: iDRAC Direct, the RESTful API with Redfish, the iDRAC Service Module and the Quick Sync 2 wireless module. For the usual shape of such a contract, see what third-party maintenance covers.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R450?

Dell's software lists still include the R450, with one boot caveat. Dell's Windows Server matrix (December 2025) has the R450 as Qualified for Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016 (2025 is not factory-installed; the image comes from Microsoft) and flags 14G rows, not 15G rows, as end-of-life. Dell's ESXi 9.x matrix covers the R450 with Xeon SP 63xx, 53xx and 43xx for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1, but its listed boot devices are hard drive and BOSS: an R450 booting from the Internal Dual SD Module offered on its spec sheet is outside that list. vSphere 9.x on PowerEdge also does not support Marvell 412xx or 578xx NICs. Once Dell cover lapses, hardware break-fix support from a third party can generally take over fault diagnosis and part replacement, with engineer visits.

Refresh planning needs more care. With no R460 in Dell's iDRAC9 16G list, Windows Server matrix or ESXi 9.x matrix, this page treats the R660xs as the next model in the same line because it is the 16G two-socket 1U server with 16 DIMM slots. Dell's R660xs Technical Guide (Rev A06, September 2026) compares it with the R650xs, not the R450, and the 17G R470 Technical Guide compares the R470 with the R660xs. For sites moving from the R440, Dell's R450 Technical Guide says 'The R450 is compatible with the R440, R6515, and R6415 rails and CMA', so R440 rails can be reused. Refurbished builds can be explored in the refurbished PowerEdge configurator.

  • Firmware is still current. Dell's iDRAC9 7.30.30.54 (Rev A00, August 2026) is a security-fix release, and its supported-systems table lists the R450 among 15th-generation servers. Dell dropped 14G after iDRAC9 7.00.00.183; the R450 is still supported. (dl.dell.com)
  • Dell's Windows Server support matrix (PDF dated Dec 2025) lists the R450 as Qualified for Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016. Footnote 8 on the WS2025 entry: WS2025 is not factory-installed; customers get the image from Microsoft. 14G rows are flagged as end-of-life; 15G rows are not. (dl.dell.com)
  • Dell's ESXi 9.x compatibility matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) lists the R450 with Intel Xeon SP 63xx/53xx/43xx for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1. The supported boot devices are Hard Drive and BOSS; the Internal Dual SD Module offered on the R450 spec sheet is not listed. Marvell 412xx and 578xx network controllers are not supported with vSphere 9.x on PowerEdge. (dl.dell.com)
  • Useful for refresh planning: Dell's R450 Technical Guide says 'The R450 is compatible with the R440, R6515, and R6415 rails and CMA', so existing R440 rails can be reused. (i.dell.com)
  • Checked on 2026-10-08: Dell's UK online-store URL for the R450 returns a 302 redirect to the Dell UK homepage. Dell has published no end-of-sale date, so this only shows the model is no longer sold online. (dell.com)

Dell announced the R450 on 17 March 2021, in a release that gave the R750xs, R650xs, R550, R450, XR11 and XR12 planned availability in the second quarter of 2021. Dell's R450 Technical Guide (Rev A03, November 2022) compares it with the PowerEdge R440. The Dell forum answer on end-of-life dates was itself a reply about the R550, announced in that same release. If your estate also includes the R430, see PowerEdge R430 end of life.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R450

Is the Dell PowerEdge R450 end of life?

Dell has published no end-of-life or end-of-service-life date for the R450, and its EOL spreadsheet has no R450 row. Dell leaves the end date to each unit: it falls when the warranty or contract on that R450's Service Tag runs out. The R450's Dell UK store page redirected to the Dell UK homepage on 8 October 2026, which shows only that it is no longer sold online.

How do I check when support ends on my R450?

Find the Service Tag on the front information tag, the MEST label at the rear or the label on the chassis's left wall, then enter it on Dell's contract services page to see warranty status and expiry. Repeat the check for each R450, since support ends unit by unit; for other models, start from the server end-of-life checker.

Can the R450 run ESXi 9?

Dell's ESXi 9.x matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) lists the R450 for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1 with Xeon SP 63xx, 53xx and 43xx processors. The listed boot devices are hard drive and BOSS; the Internal Dual SD Module is not among them. Marvell 412xx and 578xx NICs lack vSphere 9.x support on PowerEdge.

What came after the PowerEdge R450?

No R460 appears in Dell's 16G iDRAC9 list or Windows Server matrix. This page treats the R660xs as the next model in the same line because it is the 16G two-socket 1U server with 16 DIMM slots, though Dell's R660xs Technical Guide compares it with the R650xs rather than the R450.

Is R450 firmware free to download out of warranty?

Yes. Under Dell's firmware KB, Dell server drivers and firmware are free to download from Dell Support, warranty or not. The R450 appears in the supported-systems table of the August 2026 iDRAC9 7.30.30.54 security-fix release.
