PowerEdge R650 end of life

The PowerEdge R650 has no model-wide end-of-life or end-of-service-life date: Dell does not publish either for PowerEdge servers, and each R650's support ends with the warranty or contract on its own Service Tag. Dell is still releasing firmware for this 1U, 32-DIMM server, including iDRAC9 7.30.30.54 in August 2026. What has changed is online sales: on 8 October 2026 the R650's Dell UK store page redirected to the Dell UK homepage while the R660 page loaded.

PowerEdge R650 support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the PowerEdge R650 stands today

Both dates that matter for the R650 are unpublished. In a February 2025 Dell forum reply about the R550, a Dell Social Media and Communities Professional wrote: 'As of about the 13th generation of servers, Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates for the Poweredge lines.' Dell's hardware EOL spreadsheet (KB 000185734, current as of 2 October 2026) has no standalone PowerEdge R650 row. Its 'PowerFlex Appliance R650' and 'PowerFlex custom Node R650' rows, with an EOL date of 4 November 2024 and an 'EOSS Date' of 30 November 2029, belong to the PowerFlex product built on the R650, not the PowerEdge server. The third-party tracker checked, Park Place Technologies' EOSL library (now including the former Service Express database), has no PowerEdge R650 entry.

The answer therefore sits on your own R650. Its Installation and Service Manual places the Service Tag on the front information tag, the rear Mini Enterprise Service Tag (MEST) label and a label on the chassis's left wall; entering it on Dell's contract services page shows warranty status and expiry (Dell KB 000132024). The store redirect shows only that the R650 is no longer sold online in the UK; with no end-of-sale date published, it does not give a support end date. For other models in a mixed estate, see the server end-of-life checker.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell ties support end dates to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The Service Tag is on the information tag at the front of the system, on the Mini Enterprise Service Tag (MEST) label at the rear, and on a label on the left wall of the chassis (see 'Locating the Express Service Code and Service Tag' in the R650 Installation and Service Manual, https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r650_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see the warranty status and expiration date (Dell KB 000132024, https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/000132024). Renewals are requested at https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell says warranty renewals are not available in all countries, and units bought through a reseller partner may need to be renewed through that reseller.

What still works after Dell support ends

An expired warranty does not cut an R650 off from firmware. Dell's firmware KB (last modified 31 August 2026) states: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' What can end is iDRAC9 coverage of a generation: Dell recorded the end of iDRAC9 firmware for 14G in the iDRAC9 release notes, not in a separate dated notice, and the 7.30.30.54 notes say 'The last release that supported 14G servers is iDRAC9 version 7.00.00.183.' No Dell date for ending iDRAC9 maintenance on 15G was found, so read that note in each new release.

Dell's hardware option is a per-Service-Tag warranty renewal. Dell says warranties 'can be renewed to cover Dell-branded hardware repairs or replacement parts', though not in all countries, and no model-wide maximum term is published. The same forum reply said coverage is 'generally 5 years after the sale, or may be longer depending on part availability'; that is a forum answer rather than published policy, and no R650 date follows from it.

  • Dell's firmware KB says: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' So R650 BIOS, iDRAC and component firmware can be downloaded without an active warranty or contract (KB last modified 31 Aug 2026). (dell.com)
  • Dell recorded the end of iDRAC9 firmware for 14G in the iDRAC9 release notes, not in a separate dated notice. The current notes (7.30.30.54, Rev A00, August 2026) say: 'This release only supports Dell PowerEdge 15th and 16th generation servers... The last release that supported 14G servers is iDRAC9 version 7.00.00.183.' For the R650, check that note in each new iDRAC9 release. (dl.dell.com)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Dell warranty renewal (per Service Tag) — Dell says warranties 'can be renewed to cover Dell-branded hardware repairs or replacement parts'. 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and reseller-bought units may need to renew through the reseller. Dell publishes no model-wide maximum term. Eligibility is shown per Service Tag. (dell.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R650

An R650 contract has to match the build, because Dell lists very different front ends for the same 1U chassis: four 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays, eight or ten 2.5-inch SAS/SATA/NVMe bays, or no drives, plus an optional pair of rear 2.5-inch SAS/SATA/NVMe bays. Internally, Dell lists the PERC H345, H355, H745, H755 and H755N, the HBA355i, S150 software RAID and BOSS-S1 or BOSS-S2 for M.2 boot, while the PERC H840 and HBA355E connect external storage. Name the exact controller and any enclosure attached to it.

Power needs the same care. The R650 takes up to two PSUs from five types, including an 1100 W -48 to -60 V DC unit and an 1800 W Titanium unit limited to 200-240 V AC or 240 V DC, so a spare must match the feed as well as the wattage. Add the 32 DIMM sockets (RDIMM, LRDIMM or Intel Persistent Memory 200 series), the 2 x 1 GbE LOM, the OCP 3.0 NIC slot, up to three PCIe Gen4 slots and the iDRAC9 controller. For Dell-specific cover, see Dell third-party maintenance; a quote can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R650?

Dell's Windows Server support matrix, dated December 2025, rates the R650 Qualified for Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016; a footnote adds that Windows Server 2025 is not factory-installed and customers get the image from Microsoft. That matrix says 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued' and flags the 14G rows but not the 15G rows, and notes that Secured-core support starts with 15G. Dell's ESXi 9.x matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) pairs the R650 with Xeon SP 83xx, 63xx, 53xx and 43xx for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1, booting from a hard drive or BOSS. When a unit's Dell warranty ends, cover for diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits can generally come from third-party maintenance.

Two checks would point to refresh. Marvell 412xx and 578xx network controllers are not supported with vSphere 9.x on PowerEdge, so review an R650's NICs before any ESXi 9 upgrade. The other is the iDRAC9 release notes: if a release names a last version for 15G, as the current notes name 7.00.00.183 for 14G, later iDRAC9 releases would not cover the R650. The R660 is the next model in the same line; for refurbished builds, see the refurbished PowerEdge configurator.

  • Firmware is still current. Dell's iDRAC9 7.30.30.54 (Rev A00, August 2026) is a security-fix release, and its supported-systems table lists the R650. Dell dropped 14G after iDRAC9 7.00.00.183; the R650's management controller is still in active firmware support. (dl.dell.com)
  • Dell's Windows Server support matrix (PDF dated Dec 2025) lists the R650 as Qualified for Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016. Footnote 8 on the WS2025 entry: WS2025 is not factory-installed; customers get the image from Microsoft. The matrix says 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued' and flags the 14G rows; it does not flag the 15G rows. It also says Secured-core support starts with 15G. (dl.dell.com)
  • Dell's VMware vSphere ESXi 9.x compatibility matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) lists the R650 with Intel Xeon SP 83xx/63xx/53xx/43xx for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1, with Hard Drive and BOSS as boot devices. Marvell 412xx and 578xx network controllers are not supported with vSphere 9.x on PowerEdge, so check the NICs before upgrading. (dl.dell.com)
  • Do not confuse this model with Dell's 30 Nov 2029 date. Dell's hardware EOL spreadsheet (KB 000185734, current as of 2 Oct 2026) gives 'PowerFlex Appliance R650' and 'PowerFlex custom Node R650' an RTS date of 1 Nov 2021, an EOL date of 4 Nov 2024 and an 'EOSS Date' of 30 Nov 2029. Those dates belong to the PowerFlex product built on the R650, not the standalone PowerEdge R650. (dell.com)
  • Checked on 2026-10-08: Dell's UK online-store URL for the R650 returns a 302 redirect to the Dell UK homepage, while the 16G R660 page loads. Dell has published no end-of-sale date, so this only shows the model is no longer sold online. It does not give a support end date. (dell.com)

The R650 was announced on 17 March 2021 in the same Dell release as the R750, R750xa, C6520 and MX750c, with planned global availability in May 2021. Dell's R650 Technical Guide (Rev A02, September 2021) compares it with the PowerEdge R640, and the R660 Technical Guide (Rev A00, February 2023) sets the R660 against the R650 in its 'generational comparison' chapter, the basis for treating the R660 as the next model in the same line. For other models you may run alongside it, see PowerEdge R630 end of life.

Each bar runs from release to the milestone that marks end of support for the model as a whole. Amber bars end on a third-party tracker's date, not the vendor's. A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R650

Is the Dell PowerEdge R650 end of life?

Dell has not published an end-of-life or end-of-service-life date for the R650; it publishes no model-wide end-of-sale or end-of-service-life dates for PowerEdge servers. Support ends per unit, with the warranty or contract on each Service Tag. The R650 had left Dell's UK online store by 8 October 2026, but that shows only that it is not sold there online.

Does the 30 November 2029 PowerFlex date apply to the R650?

No. Dell's hardware EOL spreadsheet gives an 'EOSS Date' of 30 November 2029 to PowerFlex Appliance R650 and PowerFlex custom Node R650, which are PowerFlex products built on the R650. The standalone PowerEdge R650 has no row in that spreadsheet.

Can I still download firmware for the R650 without a warranty?

Yes. Dell's firmware KB says drivers and firmware for Dell servers are a free download from Dell Support, so an R650 needs no active contract for BIOS, iDRAC or component updates. It is listed in iDRAC9 7.30.30.54, a security-fix release from August 2026.

What came after the PowerEdge R650?

The next model in the same line is the PowerEdge R660. Dell's R660 Technical Guide (Rev A00, February 2023) compares the two in its generational comparison chapter, and the R660's Dell UK store page loaded on 8 October 2026 when the R650's redirected.

Can I get third-party maintenance for an R650?

Once an R650's Dell cover ends, an option outside Dell is third-party maintenance, which generally offers diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits. Base the quote on the unit's actual drive layout, PSUs, controllers and NICs; a quote can be requested once those are listed.
