Lenovo · ThinkSystem first generation 4-socket (Intel Xeon Scalable Gen 1 / Gen 2)

Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 end of life

The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 is withdrawn from marketing, but no End of Service date for it appears in Lenovo's lookup: on 8 October 2026 the EOS lookup returned no date for machine type 7X18 or 7X19 in EMEA, NA, AP or LA. It is a four-socket server from the first ThinkSystem generation, 2U high with up to 48 DIMM slots, and Lenovo has not dated its final withdrawal.

ThinkSystem SR850 support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the ThinkSystem SR850 stands today

The SR850's withdrawal ran on two tracks, one per processor generation. For 1st Gen Xeon Scalable builds, guide LP0645 withdrew all Gen 1 models for EMEA and North America on 31 January 2020, while Gen 2 models remained available, and recorded the Gen 1 SR850's withdrawal from marketing on 2 February 2021. The 2nd Gen guide, LP1052, records a dated EMEA step: on 6 May 2022 preconfigured EMEA models were withdrawn, with configure-to-order still available. LP1052 now describes the SR850 as withdrawn from marketing, but its latest change-log entry, on 31 October 2023, only added an ESXi 8.0 U2 preload, so the final withdrawal is undated.

End of Service is a separate milestone, and Lenovo has not posted one for the SR850. Lenovo says EOS dates go up at least 90 days ahead, in most cases longer, so the empty lookup result means support has not ended. To check a particular unit, open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup, set the geo to EMEA, and key in 7X18 (one-year warranty) or 7X19 (three-year warranty), the leading four characters of the product label's machine type/model, plus the model code, for example CTO1WW. Warranty and contract cover, by contrast, are checked per serial number in Lenovo's warranty lookup.

Finding the date for your own unit

Lenovo sets End of Service by geography, machine type and model, not by serial number. Open Lenovo's End of Service Date Lookup (https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht504708) and choose geo EMEA for UK units. Enter the machine type (7X18 or 7X19, the first four characters of the machine type/model on the product label) and the model code, for example CTO1WW. On 2026-10-08 neither SR850 machine type had an EOS date posted. Warranty and contract end dates are per unit: enter the serial number at https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/warranty-lookup.

What still works after Lenovo support ends

SR850 firmware can be downloaded without a serial number, so access is not tied to a warranty or contract; Lenovo applies that rule to its server products but not to its storage, which needs a serial number with active warranty. The newest platform packages on the 7X19 download list, checked on 8 October 2026, were XCC 6.90 (DS577646, 4 September 2025) and UEFI 4.30 (DS577448, 29 August 2025), neither flagged for login or warranty. What follows an EOS is set out only in general terms: Lenovo's notice describes it as the withdrawal of support, says that 'in some cases' Lenovo 'will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date', and does not address whether firmware stays posted.

Lenovo's own options for the SR850 are listed in its product guide at four levels: Standard Next Business Day, Premier Next Business Day, Premier 24x7 4-Hour Response and Premier Support Plus 24x7 4-Hour Response, with the caveat that 'some warranty upgrades may not be available in all markets or regions'. This page has not established whether Lenovo still sells them for this withdrawn model or for a unit of your age; check with Lenovo or a Lenovo partner, and set the answer against an alternative to Lenovo Premier Support.

  • Lenovo server software needs no serial number to download: 'For Lenovo Server products, serial numbers are NOT required to download software.' Lenovo storage is different: it needs a valid serial number with active warranty. SR850 firmware downloads are therefore not tied to a warranty or contract. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo's EOS notice treats End of Service as the withdrawal of support. It says that 'in some cases, Lenovo will use reasonable commercial endeavors to maintain eligible products beyond the EOS date'. It does not say whether firmware downloads stay posted after EOS. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Lenovo warranty upgrades and post-warranty support (Standard Next Business Day, Premier Next Business Day, Premier 24x7 4-Hour Response, Premier Support Plus 24x7 4-Hour Response) — Listed in the SR850 product guide, which notes that 'some warranty upgrades may not be available in all markets or regions'. We did not verify that Lenovo still sells them for this withdrawn model or for a unit of a given age. Confirm with Lenovo or a Lenovo partner. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the ThinkSystem SR850

The Processor and Memory Expansion Tray is what sets an SR850 contract apart. It carries processors 3 and 4 and 24 of the 48 DIMM slots, and it is standard on most models. It also governs power redundancy: a second supply needs either the tray or a power interposer card, so a unit without the tray depends on that card to run two supplies. Include the tray in spares planning for four-socket units. The supplies themselves are hot-swap, redundant 80 PLUS Platinum units at 750 W, 1100 W or 1600 W, up to two per server.

Storage is up to 16 2.5-inch hot-swap SAS/SATA bays, with Lenovo's maximum-storage figures including builds of up to eight 2.5-inch NVMe SSDs. There is no embedded RAID, so hardware RAID needs an adapter: RAID 530i, 730-8i, 930-8i or 940-8i, or 930-16i or 940-16i; 430/440 HBAs were also offered. Memory may be RDIMM, LRDIMM or 3DS RDIMM, up to 6 TB with 48x 128 GB 3DS RDIMMs and four processors, plus as many as 24 Optane DC persistent memory modules, and management runs on the XClarity Controller (Pilot4 XE401 BMC) with XCC Advanced as standard. Cover from a provider other than Lenovo usually means diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer attendance, and can extend beyond a vendor's End of Service (see Lenovo third-party maintenance).

Extend or refresh the ThinkSystem SR850?

The SR850's operating-system position still allows a measured approach. As of Lenovo's 30 September 2026 OS Interoperability Guide data, the 2nd Gen Xeon SP SR850 is 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3, and RHEL 9.0 to 9.3. An SR850 settled on one of those releases can reasonably stay on maintenance while no EOS is posted and firmware downloads remain open. The five-year figure Lenovo cites as its historical practice after withdrawal is subject to change at Lenovo's sole discretion without notice, so it gives no date to plan against.

The refresh trigger is the operating system. For the 2nd Gen entry, the same guide lists no support for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 or 9.1, RHEL 9.4 onwards or RHEL 10. The OS Interoperability Guide marks the SR850 'Withdrawn' and lists the ThinkSystem SR850 V4 (Xeon 6 P-cores, machine types 7DJT/7DJS/7DJU), the next model in the same line, so start planning new hardware before an operating-system move forces the decision.

  • Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 Sep 2026) lists the SR850 with 2nd Gen Xeon SP as 'Supported & Certified' for Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, VMware ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3, and RHEL 9.0 to 9.3. It shows no support ('None') for Windows Server 2025, ESXi 9.0 or 9.1, RHEL 9.4 and later, or RHEL 10. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide marks the SR850 'Withdrawn' and names the ThinkSystem SR850 V4 (Xeon 6 P-cores, machine types 7DJT/7DJS/7DJU) as its replacement server. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • The next generation by name, the SR850 V2, is itself withdrawn from marketing. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo is still releasing SR850 firmware. On 2026-10-08 the newest platform firmware on Lenovo's 7X19 download list was XCC 6.90 (DS577646, dated 4 Sep 2025) and UEFI 4.30 (DS577448, dated 29 Aug 2025). Neither package was flagged as requiring login or warranty. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)
  • Processors 3 and 4 and half the DIMM slots sit on the Processor and Memory Expansion Tray. That tray is also needed for power-supply redundancy unless a power interposer card is fitted, so include it in spares planning for 4-socket units. (lenovopress.lenovo.com)
  • Lenovo says it 'has historically provided service and support for at least five years following a product's withdrawal from marketing'. It adds that this 'is subject to change at Lenovo's sole discretion without notice'. This is not a commitment, so no EOS date is derived from it. (datacentersupport.lenovo.com)

Lenovo documents the SR850 in two guides: LP0645 for 1st Gen Xeon Scalable builds, first published on 11 July 2017, and LP1052 for 2nd Gen builds, first published on 2 April 2019, and the OS limits on this page come from the 2nd Gen entry. The SR850 V2 carries the next number in the name and is itself withdrawn from marketing, but no Lenovo document reviewed for this page links it to the SR850 as its follow-on. Lenovo's SR650 and SR630 are covered separately in the SR650 and SR630 end-of-life deep dive.

Each bar runs from release to the milestone that marks end of support for the model as a whole. Amber bars end on a third-party tracker's date, not the vendor's. A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the ThinkSystem SR850

Is the ThinkSystem SR850 end of life?

It is withdrawn from marketing, but Lenovo's lookup showed no End of Service date for 7X18 or 7X19 in EMEA, NA, AP or LA on 8 October 2026. Lenovo says it posts EOS dates at least 90 days in advance, so support has not ended.

What came after the Lenovo SR850?

By name, the SR850 V2, which is itself withdrawn from marketing. Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide instead lists the ThinkSystem SR850 V4, with Xeon 6 P-core processors, against the SR850; the V4 is the next model in the same line.

Can the SR850 move to Windows Server 2025?

Not with Lenovo certification. The OS Interoperability Guide (data updated 30 September 2026) gives 'None' for Windows Server 2025 on the 2nd Gen Xeon SP SR850, and the same for ESXi 9.0 and 9.1, RHEL 9.4 and later, and RHEL 10. It lists Windows Server 2016 to 2022 and ESXi 7.0 through 8.0 U3 as 'Supported & Certified'.

Is SR850 firmware still downloadable without a contract?

Yes. Serial numbers are not required for Lenovo server software downloads, and when checked on 8 October 2026 the SR850's newest platform packages on the 7X19 list, XCC 6.90 and UEFI 4.30, carried no login or warranty flag. Whether they remain posted after an End of Service date is something Lenovo's notice does not address.

What should a third-party maintenance contract for an SR850 include?

The Processor and Memory Expansion Tray, which holds processors 3 and 4 and half the DIMM slots, along with the RAID adapter, power supplies and XClarity Controller. A contract of this kind generally covers diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, and it can carry on after a vendor's End of Service. Set out the build in the maintenance coverage builder to request a quote.
