All three are mature, all three have UK-wide service networks, all three offer broadly equivalent topologies. The right brand depends on rack-mount form factor preference, existing service contracts, and which battery tech you're committing to.

APC = the safe default. Biggest UK installed base, best PowerChute software ecosystem, broadest product range from Smart-UPS SMT through Galaxy VX 1.5 MW. Most UK data halls already run APC.
Eaton = strong APC alternative. Best for organisations that prefer the Eaton Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) software for VMware / Hyper-V graceful-shutdown orchestration. 9PX and 93PM are the workhorses.
Riello = the underrated third option. Italian engineering, excellent build quality, often 15-25% cheaper than APC / Eaton at equivalent rating. Sentryum is a credible alternative to APC Symmetra / Eaton 9395.

Where Eaton wins
Eaton IPM (Intelligent Power Manager). Free up to 10 nodes. Best-in-class graceful-shutdown orchestration for VMware vCenter + Hyper-V SCVMM environments — automatic VM migration to alternative hosts when one rack's UPS drops below threshold.
9PX is the workhorse. Online double-conversion, 92-94% efficiency, sine-wave output, lithium-ion option. Servers + storage + network gear all happy.
93PM at the data-centre tier. Modular 50kW increments up to 500kVA (EMEA configuration). Hot-swappable power modules; no shutdown for capacity expansion.
Where Riello wins
15-25% cheaper than APC / Eaton at equivalent rating. For UK customers price-sensitive on UPS spend — particularly secondary sites, dev/test, and warehouse environments — Riello materially undercuts.
Sentryum at the data-centre tier (10-100 kVA) is excellent value. Three-phase, online, parallel-capable.

Battery technology — lithium-ion vs VRLA in 2026
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) is now the mainstream choice for new UPS deployments. 10-year service life vs 3-5 years for valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA). Higher upfront cost (typically 30-50% more) recouped in battery replacement avoidance over 6-8 years.
APC Smart-UPS Ultra, Eaton 9PX Li-ion variants, and Riello Sentryum all offer Li-ion options as of 2026.
VRLA still has its place — short runtime requirements (5-15 min), cost-sensitive secondary sites, environments where the additional cooling load of Li-ion (modest but present) is undesirable.
