The R5715 at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the R5715 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Twelve DDR5 channels and 24 slots behind a processor of at most 32 cores — up to 1.5 TB, or 48 GB per core on the 9335.
  • A short processor list built around clock speed: four EPYC 9005 parts from 8 to 32 cores, with base clocks of 3.0–3.65 GHz and maximum clocks up to 4.4 GHz.
  • Conventional drive options — 12 × 3.5-inch or 16 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA behind a front PERC H365i or H965i — with boot kept on a mirrored BOSS-N1 module at the rear.
  • Two OCP 3.0 slots and a dedicated 1 GbE BMC port alongside up to four PCIe Gen5 slots.
  • The lightest machine in Dell’s three-way comparison at 26.85 kg maximum, against 28.68 kg for the R7715 and 34.5 kg for the R7615.

Watch-outs

  • No accelerators: Dell’s comparison table gives GPU support for the R5715 as N/A.
  • No NVMe drive bays, no rear bays and no external RAID or HBA controllers.
  • Only 16, 32 and 64 GB RDIMMs, so memory stops at 1.5 TB — and filling both DIMMs per channel drops 32 GB and 64 GB modules from 5200 to 4000 MT/s.
  • CXL is not supported, and Dell states it has no plans to support it on this system.
  • Power stops at 1100 W (1050 W on 100–120 V), with no 277 VAC or −48 V DC supply listed.

  • Dell’s processor table gives 240 W for the 9335, 9255 and 9135 and 155 W for the 9015. Its thermal table lists those figures as maximum cTDP, beside a cTDP column of 210, 200, 200 and 125 W.
  • Every processor is supported at 35°C with the 2U extended heat sink: Silver fans with the 16 × 2.5-inch front, HPR Gold fans with the 12 × 3.5-inch front.
  • The processor table shows 6400 MT/s memory support, but the platform runs DDR5 at no more than 5200 MT/s (see memory).
  • The BIOS offers NPS1 (the default), NPS2 and NPS4 NUMA modes; Dell warns that some processors cannot run NPS2 or NPS4.

24 DDR5 DIMM slots

Twenty-four DDR5 RDIMM slots on 12 channels, two per channel, all serving the one processor. Only three module sizes are offered — 16, 32 and 64 GB — which caps the system at 1.5 TB. The decision that matters more is how many slots you fill, because a second DIMM in each channel costs speed.

  • 768 GB can be built two ways: 12 × 64 GB at 5200 MT/s, or 24 × 32 GB at 4000 MT/s.
  • The 1.5 TB maximum is 24 × 64 GB, running at 4000 MT/s.
  • All modules are 1.1 V parts rated for 6400 MT/s; the platform runs them at up to 5200 MT/s, and UDIMMs are not supported.
  • Dynamic post-package repair is available for non-Chipkill DIMMs; CXL is not supported on this system.

Can the R5715 take GPUs?

No. Dell’s comparison table gives the R5715’s accelerator support as N/A. For GPUs with a single EPYC 9005 socket in 2U, the R7715 in the same table takes up to three 400 W double-wide or six 75 W single-wide cards.

What PCIe and networking does the R5715 have?

Up to four PCIe Gen5 slots with x16 lanes, depending on riser configuration 2 or 3, fed by up to 128 lanes of I/O from the processor. Networking comes from up to two OCP NIC 3.0 cards — 1, 10 or 25 GbE in Dell’s list — plus a dedicated 1 GbE BMC port.

Which power supplies does the R5715 use?

A redundant pair chosen from four hot-plug 60 mm units: 800 W or 1100 W, each in Platinum or Titanium. All run on 100–240 V AC or 240 V DC, and at 100–120 V the 1100 W units give 1050 W. Dell lists no 277 V or −48 V option for this model.

How big and heavy is the PowerEdge R5715?

It is 86.8 mm high and 482 mm wide, and 802.4 mm deep measured to the PSU handle. Fully loaded it weighs up to 26.85 kg with twelve 3.5-inch drives or 26.81 kg with sixteen 2.5-inch drives. An optional metal bezel is available.

How does the R5715 differ from the R7715?

Both are 2U servers with one EPYC 9005 socket and 24 DDR5 slots at up to 5200 MT/s. The R7715 adds processors up to 160 cores, GPUs, NVMe and E3.S layouts up to 40 bays, external controllers, supplies up to 3200 W, eight Gen5 slots and a liquid-cooling option; the R5715 keeps four processors up to 32 cores, SAS/SATA bays and 800–1100 W supplies.

How does the R5715 compare with the previous-generation R7615?

The R7615 took one 4th Gen EPYC of up to 128 cores with 12 DIMM slots at 4800 MT/s, plus GPU support and NVMe and rear-bay options. The R5715 has twice the DIMM slots (24) and faster memory (5200 MT/s), but caps cores at 32 and drops GPUs, NVMe and rear bays. Its maximum weight falls from 34.5 kg to 26.85 kg.

Is the Dell PowerEdge R5715 end of life?

Dell’s R5715 guide (Rev. A02, May 2026) contains no end-of-sale or end-of-support date. According to its services appendix, Dell’s base hardware warranty lasts one or three years by model, and ProSupport contracts lengthen it. Dates will appear in our end-of-life checker as Dell releases them.
