HPE Synergy 480 Gen12 Compute ModuleSpecifications, configurations & comparisons

The Synergy 480 Gen12 is a half-height, two-socket Intel Xeon 6 compute module, and it runs only inside an HPE Synergy 12000 Frame. The frame holds up to twelve of them and supplies the fans, the interconnect modules the mezzanine cards connect to and Composer2 management; HPE even refers the module’s power specifications to the frame’s QuickSpecs. This data sheet separates what the module carries from what the frame must provide.

01 — Overview

The Synergy 480 Gen12 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the Synergy 480 Gen12 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Two Xeon 6 P-core sockets, up to 86 cores each, and 16 DDR5 slots per processor rated to 6400 MT/s — in a module 6.35 cm high.
  • In a frame that already meets its requirements, extra capacity is one more module rather than a new server: fans, interconnects and Composer2/OneView belong to the frame, and iLO Advanced comes standard with Synergy compute.
  • Four drive-cage variants plus drive-less: 8 × E3.S or 4 × SFF, each either on the MR416i-o tri-mode RAID controller or wired straight to processor 1 for Intel VROC.
  • Three x16 PCIe 5.0 mezzanine connectors, with room for two Fibre Channel HBAs at 32 Gb or 64 Gb for SAN-attached hosts.
  • The NS204i-d v2 mirrored M.2 boot device sits under the front cage and pairs with every cage option, drive-less included.

Watch-outs

  • Nothing works without a Synergy 12000 Frame carrying High Capacity Fan Kits, Composer2 and interconnect modules — and the estate must be on the right Synergy Software Release before the module goes in.
  • Mezzanine 2 only works with a second processor installed, and the MR416i-o RAID controller must sit there: a RAID cage means two CPUs and one mezzanine fewer for networking.
  • Reaching 8 TB takes 256 GB 3DS DIMMs, and HPE rules those out with the 4SFF and 8EDSFF cages. Read as written, a module with any drive cage stops at 32 × 128 GB, which is 4 TB.
  • A second DIMM on a channel costs speed: 6400 MT/s falls to 5200 MT/s.
  • HPE lists no GPU and no standard PCIe slot; the one OCP-form card, the MR416i-o, rides on an interposer in Mezzanine 2. SAS and SATA need the 4SFF OCP cage, and behind the MR416i-o 24G SAS runs at 12G and Gen5 E3.S at Gen4.

  • Two processors must be the same model. HPE also forbids mixing wattages, frequencies or core counts, and upgrades must use the same part number.
  • Processor kits ship without heat sinks: a one-processor module needs the Front Heat Sink Kit (P68225-B21), a two-processor module the Front kit plus the Rear kit (P68226-B21).
  • HPE’s feature table gives a frequency, cache, SGX enclave size (128 GB or 512 GB) and die (LCC, HCC or XCC) for each SKU, but prints no turbo frequency or thread count.
  • The 32-core, 3.1 GHz, 300 W Xeon 6745P (P81591-B21) arrived in version 3 of the QuickSpecs.
  • HPE states that every listed processor supports up to 4 TB of memory per socket.
03 — Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Thirty-two slots in all: every processor drives eight DDR5 channels, and each channel takes two DIMMs. With a single DIMM on each channel the rating is 6400 MT/s; filling the second slot on each channel brings every DIMM down to 5200 MT/s. HPE’s 8.0 TB ceiling means all 32 slots holding 256 GB 3DS modules — 4 TB behind each processor.

  • HPE’s ordering step accepts 1, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs per processor, yet its population guidance also counts two identical DIMMs as near-balanced and the 16 GB rule allows two with one processor. The document doesn’t reconcile the lists; 8 (one per channel) and 16 (two per channel) are its balanced counts.
  • The 16 GB module comes only in quantities of 1, 2, 4 or 8 with one processor, or 2, 4, 8 or 16 with two.
  • 96 GB and 128 GB modules cannot be mixed with any other DIMM; x4 and x8 modules, and 3DS and standard RDIMMs, cannot be combined either.
  • The 256 GB 3DS module is not supported with the 4SFF or 8EDSFF drive cages. Taken literally that covers all four cages, so an 8 TB module is a drive-less one booting from SAN or the NS204i-d v2.
  • With a single processor, only half of the 32 slots are usable.
  • HPE prints two latencies for the same kits: CAS-52-52-52 for the 16–128 GB kits in the option list, CAS-46-45-45 in the feature list and memory table.
  • Empty slots take DIMM blanks — HPE specifies its DDR4 blank kit P07818-B21 and states it fits the DDR5 slots; DDR4 memory from older servers will not work.
04 — Storage

4 drive-cage kits, up to 8 bays

Each module is built with exactly one front option: 4 × SFF or 8 × E3.S, each available as an OCP Connect cage cabled to the MR416i-o RAID controller or as a Direct Connect cage wired to processor 1 — or a drive-less front. Beneath it, the optional NS204i-d v2 carries two mirrored M.2 NVMe boot SSDs.

Tri-Mode (PCIe Gen4 NVMe, 12G SAS, 6G SATA); 8 internal / 16 external lanes; supports internal drives only; only in Mezzanine 2 and two processors required; only supported together with HPE Synergy 480 Gen12 OCP Interposer Kit (P68223-B21); also needs MR416i-o Controller Cable Kit (P68224-B21) and HPE 16W Smart Hybrid Capacitor with 260mm Cable (P65042-B21); used with the 4SFF and 8EDSFF OCP drive cages
  • Intel VROC HYBRID RAID — Software RAID. Only available with the 4SFF NVMe Direct Connect and 8EDSFF NVMe E3.S Direct Connect drive cages; no separate option SKU listed
  • HPE Synergy NS204i-d v2 M.2 Boot Storage Device — Boot. M.2 HW RAID (mirrored) boot device; direct PCIe connection from the processor, installs below the front drive cage; works with all five drive cage options; requires 2 x M.2 NVMe SSDs; CTO or BTO

  • HPE 960GB NVMe Gen4 Mainstream Performance Read Intensive M.2 2280 PE9010 SSD (P80321-B21) — boot
  • Direct Connect cages take NVMe only and use Intel VROC HYBRID RAID. OCP Connect cages need the MR416i-o, its cable kit (P68224-B21), the OCP Interposer (P68223-B21), the 16 W Smart Hybrid Capacitor (P65042-B21, printed once as P065042-B21) and two processors.
  • The MR416i-o is a tri-mode controller (Gen4 NVMe, 12G SAS, 6G SATA) with 8 GB of cache that serves internal drives only; 24G SAS SSDs drop to 12G behind it.
  • HPE’s controller notes describe the 4- and 8-drive Premium cages as SAS/SATA/NVMe, while the 8EDSFF OCP cage’s own entry lists E3.S NVMe drives only; the page follows the cage entry.
  • A drive-less module ships with a grill blank where the cage and backplane would be, for stateless or SAN/NAS boot designs.
  • NS204i-d v2 boot: two M.2 NVMe SSDs of 480 GB or 960 GB, mirrored in hardware, on a direct PCIe link from the processor.
  • HPE drives from Gen10 Plus and earlier servers are not compatible with these bays, and SAS HDDs can share a module with SAS SSDs only as two separate RAID 0 volumes.

How the Synergy 480 Gen12 compares with its family

The Synergy 480 Gen12 draws on the same Xeon 6 P-core family as HPE’s Gen12 rack servers covered here: the two-socket DL360 Gen12 (1U) and DL380 Gen12 (2U), the single-socket DL320 Gen12, and the DL580 Gen12, which takes up to four sockets in 4U. The chart reads every figure from each model’s own spec file.

08 — Use cases

Four builds that suit the Synergy 480 Gen12

Four module builds that follow HPE’s cage, controller and memory rules. Our configurator doesn’t yet carry Synergy mezzanine adapters or the NS204i-d v2, so the compulsory network mezzanine and any boot mirror are added on the quote; the Synergy 12000 Frame, its fans, interconnect modules and Composer2 are quoted separately.

Virtualisation · vSAN

E3.S vSAN host on direct-attached NVMe

HPE aims the four- and eight-drive cages at SAN and vSAN work. Eight 7.68 TB E3.S drives on the Direct Connect cage give 61.44 TB raw on processor 1 with no controller in a mezzanine slot, and two 32-core 6530P processors with sixteen 64 GB DIMMs stay at one DIMM per channel.

  • 2 × Xeon 6530P32 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 225 W each
  • 16 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 1 TB, one DIMM per channel
  • 8 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe — 61.44 TB raw (8EDSFF Direct Connect cage)
  • Intel VROC, no add-in controller
  • VMware vSphere 8 Essentials Plus
  • HPE Tech Care Essential

Every module needs at least one network mezzanine; we add a Synergy 6310C 25/50Gb adapter, in Mezzanine 3 as HPE advises, on the quote.

Databases

Hardware-RAID SAS SSD database module

Only the 4SFF OCP Connect cage takes SAS drives, and it brings the MR416i-o’s 8 GB cache and hardware RAID. Two 32-core 6745P processors at 3.1 GHz keep core counts in check for per-core database licences, and sixteen 128 GB DIMMs give 2 TB at 6400 MT/s.

  • 2 × Xeon 6745P32 cores @ 3.1 GHz, 300 W each
  • 16 × 128 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 2 TB
  • 4 × 7.68 TB SAS SSD in the 4SFF OCP Connect cage
  • HPE MR416i-o tri-mode RAID, 8 GB cache, in Mezzanine 2
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

The MR416i-o also needs the OCP Interposer, its cable kit and the 16 W capacitor, and it requires both processors. 24G SAS SSDs run at 12G behind it.

In-memory · SAP

8 TB drive-less memory host

As HPE words its rules, only a drive-less module can take the 256 GB 3DS DIMMs needed for 8 TB. Two 86-core 6787P processors drive all 32 slots at 5200 MT/s, boot comes from the SAN or an NS204i-d v2 mirror, and HPE provides a Synergy 480 Gen12 Solution Node SKU (P83806-B21) for SAP configurations.

  • 2 × Xeon 6787P86 cores @ 2 GHz, 350 W each
  • 32 × 256 GB DDR5-6400 3DS RDIMM — 8 TB at two DIMMs per channel (5200 MT/s)
  • Drive-less front (grill blank) — SAN or NS204i-d v2 boot
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
  • HPE Tech Care Critical

Add a Synergy 7330C 64Gb or 5331C 32Gb Fibre Channel mezzanine for SAN boot plus a 6310C for Ethernet; both go on the quote. For SAP, HPE asks for its Solution Node SKU.

Licence-lean host

Single-processor module for per-core licences

One 16-core 6517P at 3.2 GHz keeps the core count — and core-based licensing — low. Eight 64 GB DIMMs fill that processor’s channels at 6400 MT/s, and the 8EDSFF Direct Connect cage runs its E3.S drives from processor 1 under Intel VROC, since the OCP Connect cages need two processors.

  • 1 × Xeon 6517P16 cores @ 3.2 GHz, 190 W
  • 8 × 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM — 512 GB, one per channel
  • 4 × 7.68 TB E3.S NVMe in the 8EDSFF Direct Connect cage, four bays free
  • Intel VROC, no add-in controller
  • Windows Server 2025 Standard
  • HPE Tech Care Basic

One processor means the Front Heat Sink Kit only, half the DIMM slots and no Mezzanine 2 — networking goes in Mezzanine 1 or 3.

Synergy 480 Gen12 questions, answered from the documentation

Does the Synergy 480 Gen12 work outside a Synergy 12000 Frame?

No. It is a half-height compute module that installs only in an HPE Synergy 12000 Frame, which holds up to twelve of them. The frame carries the system fans (High Capacity Fan Kits are required), the interconnect modules the mezzanine ports connect to and Composer2/OneView management, and HPE refers the module’s power specifications to the frame’s QuickSpecs.

What is the maximum memory of the Synergy 480 Gen12?

8.0 TB — 32 × 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, 4 TB per processor, at 5200 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel. HPE does not allow the 256 GB module with the 4SFF or 8EDSFF cages, so read as written a module with drives tops out at 32 × 128 GB, or 4 TB.

Which processors does the Synergy 480 Gen12 support?

One or two Intel Xeon 6 P-core processors of the same model, chosen from 16 SKUs: seven 6500P and nine 6700P parts with 8 to 86 cores and 150 W to 350 W. Each order also needs HPE’s Synergy heat sink kits — front for one processor, front and rear for two.

How many drives does the Synergy 480 Gen12 hold?

Up to eight E3.S NVMe SSDs in an 8EDSFF cage or four SFF drives in a 4SFF cage — one cage per module, or a drive-less front. The NS204i-d v2 can add two mirrored M.2 NVMe boot SSDs beneath any of them.

Does the Synergy 480 Gen12 support GPUs?

HPE’s QuickSpecs lists no GPU or accelerator for this module. Its expansion is the three mezzanine connectors, which take Ethernet and Fibre Channel adapters and, in Mezzanine 2, the MR416i-o RAID controller.

What networking does the Synergy 480 Gen12 have?

Three x16 PCIe 5.0 mezzanine connectors, at least one of which must carry a network adapter. HPE lists the Synergy 6310C 25/50Gb Ethernet adapter plus 32Gb (5331C) and 64Gb (7330C) Fibre Channel HBAs, and each connector sends a dual-port card’s ports to two of the frame’s six interconnect bays.

Which power supplies does the Synergy 480 Gen12 use?

None of its own. HPE’s module QuickSpecs gives no wattage, input or BTU figures; it sends readers to the HPE Synergy Frame QuickSpecs for power specifications and to HPE Power Advisor for typical consumption.

How big and heavy is the Synergy 480 Gen12?

It measures 6.35 × 21.4 × 60.0 cm (H × W × D) with the bezel. HPE gives 8.16 kg fully loaded — two processors, 32 DIMMs, drives, mezzanine cards and a flash-cache battery — and 6.57 kg with one processor and one DIMM.

Can the Synergy 480 Gen12 run with one processor?

Yes, but a one-processor module can use only half the DIMM slots and has no Mezzanine 2, which depends on the second socket. That also rules out the MR416i-o and the OCP Connect drive cages, both of which require two processors; the Direct Connect cages are wired to processor 1.

Is the HPE Synergy 480 Gen12 end of life?

Not according to its QuickSpecs: version 13, dated 8 September 2026, still offers the configure-to-order module (P68217-B21) and names no end-of-sale or end-of-support date. New modules carry HPE’s three-year parts, labour and on-site cover; look up any later HPE notice in our server end-of-life checker.
