The XE9680L is the direct liquid-cooled, 4U version of Dell’s eight-GPU Xeon server, built around an NVIDIA HGX H200 or B200 board with cold plates on the GPUs, NVLink switches and processors. It needs a coolant supply at the rack. This page sets out what Dell documents: the coolant loops, supplies, twelve fabric slots and the facility the chassis expects.

01 — Overview

The XE9680L at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the XE9680L is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Cold plates sit on the eight GPUs, the NVLink switches and both processors, and the chassis carries the 1000 W-per-GPU B200 board in 4U.
  • Twelve x16 Gen5 slots, each able to take a 400G NDR InfiniBand/Ethernet adapter or 400G SmartNIC, with two slots set aside for DPUs above 75 W.
  • The same chassis takes either board: H200 with 141 GB per GPU on SXM5, or B200 with 180 GB per GPU on SXM6, both joined by NVLink.
  • Every listed processor, and both GPU boards, is cleared for ASHRAE A2 at 35°C inlet on cold plates in Dell’s thermal tables.
  • Dell measured a single unit at 7.6 B (H200) and 7.8 B (B200) sound power at 25°C in its customer-usage test (full CPU, memory, SSD and GPU load), excluding CDU noise.

Watch-outs

  • Liquid is not optional: the rear carries separate coolant tubes for the processors and for the GPUs, and Dell’s spec sheet lists an IR5000 rack as required.
  • Only five processors, all 5th Gen Xeon Scalable, and only 64, 96 or 128 GB DIMMs — no 32 GB modules and no 4th Gen parts.
  • Storage is eight 2.5-inch NVMe bays with no PERC, no SAS/SATA and no rear bays; only the BOSS-N1 boot pair has hardware RAID.
  • Six supplies at high line only, and the model follows the GPU: 2800 W units with H200, 3000 W units with B200.
  • At 1037.57 mm deep with the bezel and up to 95.6 kg, it needs a server lift and a check for clearance behind the rack.

Five 5th Gen Xeon Scalable models make the list: four XCC parts at 350 W with 48 to 64 cores, and the 32-core 8562Y+ at 300 W. All five sit under cold plates, and Dell’s processor table gives each a 4 TB memory capacity — the same figure as the whole chassis maximum.

  • Dell’s thermal matrix lists every model as supported at up to 35°C with DLC cold plates and High-Performance Gold CPU fans. It labels the 8562Y+ row “56C”, while the processor table gives it 32 cores.
  • Each processor has up to four UPI links at 20 GT/s and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes.
  • Slots 31–36 hang off processor 2 and slots 37–42 off processor 1, so both sockets must be fitted; the one riser configuration lists two processors.
  • Turbo appears only as a yes/no entry in Dell’s table, so no boost clocks are quoted.

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots take 64 GB, 96 GB or 128 GB modules for up to 4 TB. Dell’s acoustic test builds used 32 × 128 GB with H200 and 32 × 96 GB (3 TB) with B200.

  • All three modules are x4, 1.1 V parts rated at 5600 MT/s; the 64 GB and 96 GB are dual rank and the 128 GB quad rank.
  • Dell notes that the achievable speed depends on the processor model and how many slots are filled.
  • Unlike the air-cooled XE9680, there is no 32 GB option and no per-GPU minimum-memory table in this guide.
  • Blanking panels are unnecessary once 16 or more DIMMs are fitted.

1 drive-bay layout, up to 8 bays

A single layout: eight 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe drives cabled directly from the PCIe switch board, with no RAID controller in the path. Dell’s spec sheet gives 122.88 TB as the raw maximum; the configuration matrix lists no SAS, SATA, E3.S or rear option.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

The lower 2U is a GPU sled carrying one NVIDIA HGX board with eight SXM GPUs linked by NVLink. Dell’s drawings show five coolant loops across the sled — four for the GPU cold plates and one for the NVLink switches — and the retimers carry heat sinks. The B200 sled also carries a CX-7 module. A rear sled handle slides the whole lower layer out. Eight H200 141 GB at 700 W each, or eight B200 180 GB at 1000 W each, with six 2800 W or six 3000 W supplies to match.

Four PCIe switches (SW1–SW4) fan the processors’ Gen5 lanes out to twelve full-height, half-length x16 slots, 31 to 42, all opening at the front. There is one riser configuration and it has no front PERC.

  • The slot table lists Intel 4 × 10 GbE, Broadcom 2 × 25 GbE and Mellanox 2 × 25 GbE OCP cards; the NIC port table names only the first two.

2 power supplies, 2,800–3,000 W

Six 86 mm Titanium supplies on C21 cords, running either 5+1 (not redundant, full performance) or 3+3 fault-tolerant, where the system may throttle if more than one unit fails. The supply model is tied to the GPU board.

  • H200 builds use the 2800 W unit: 200–240 V AC or 240 V DC, with a 4760 W peak rating.
  • B200 builds use the 3000 W multi-rated unit, rated 3000 W on 209.1–240 V AC or 240 V DC and derated to 2800 W on a 200–209 V AC feed; its peak is 5100 W.
  • Neither unit supports low-line input, and supplies from different vendors must not be mixed.
  • Both units reach 90%, 94%, 96% and 94% efficiency at 10%, 20%, 50% and 100% load. The iDRAC power cap only throttles the processors and is not available from firmware 7.00.60.00.

How the XE9680L compares with its family

The XE9680L keeps the Xeon host of the air-cooled 6U XE9680 but adds cold plates, shrinks to 4U and brings the B200 board. The XE9685L is the AMD EPYC 9005 counterpart, with the same 4U dimensions and liquid cooling but the B200 board only. The XE9780L and XE9785L are liquid-cooled GPU nodes for Dell’s IR7044 and IR7050 integrated racks, and the XE9712 is a GB300 NVL72 sled.

The 8562Y+ has the highest base clock on the list, 2.8 GHz, and is the only 300 W part, a fit for simulation codes that lean on a few fast host threads between GPU kernels. Eight 15.36 TB drives reach the 122.88 TB raw figure in Dell’s spec sheet.

Does the Dell PowerEdge XE9680L need liquid cooling?

Yes. Direct liquid cooling is the only cooling option Dell lists: cold plates sit on the GPUs, the NVLink switches and both processors, with separate rear tubes for the processor and GPU loops. Dell’s acoustic figures exclude the CDU, and its spec sheet lists an IR5000 rack as required.

Which GPUs does the XE9680L support?

Two NVIDIA HGX boards, each carrying eight NVLink-connected GPUs: the H200 (SXM5, 141 GB and 700 W per GPU) or the B200 (SXM6, 180 GB and 1000 W per GPU). The board is fixed at order, and the choice also decides the power supply model.

Cooling and density are the main split: the XE9680L puts cold plates on its GPUs and processors in 4U, where the XE9680 relies on sixteen fans (eighteen with Gaudi 3) in 6U. The liquid-cooled model narrows the choice to 5th Gen Xeon and NVIDIA H200 or B200, but gains two extra PCIe slots (twelve against ten). The air-cooled model also offers A100, H100, H20, MI300X and Gaudi 3 boards, 4th Gen Xeon and a 16-bay E3.S front.

How does the XE9680L differ from the XE9685L?

Both are 4U and liquid-cooled, with the same published dimensions, twelve slots and eight NVMe bays. The XE9685L runs two EPYC 9005 processors, the largest with 192 cores, plus 24 DIMMs at 6400 MT/s for 3 TB, and offers only the B200 board. The XE9680L uses 5th Gen Xeon with 32 DIMMs for 4 TB, and adds an H200 option.

Is the Dell PowerEdge XE9680L end of life?

Dell’s June 2026 guide for the XE9680L gives no model-wide end-of-sale or end-of-support date. The server end-of-life checker on our site shows Dell’s dates as soon as they are published.
