The XD690 at a glance

Our read of HPE’s documentation: where the XD690 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • Eight NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs on an HGX B300 board in a chassis designed for air-cooled infrastructure, with ARCS or a rear door heat exchanger as options.
  • Eight ConnectX-8 devices sit on the GPU board itself for InfiniBand XDR or Spectrum-X Ethernet, leaving the two PCIe positions for north–south networking.
  • Twelve 3,200 W Titanium supplies with N+N redundancy and twelve power cords arrive fixed with the chassis.
  • Orders ship pre-racked in HPE racks by default, with air dam kits specified for 42U and 48U racks.
  • Managed by HPE’s XD690 BMC with DMTF Redfish support and a DC-SCM port, role-based Redfish accounts, NIST SP800-193 firmware protection and SPI bus monitoring.

Watch-outs

  • It weighs about 226 kg (500 lb): HPE adds a mechanised lift to the order unless you have one, and its engineers need a server lift on site for break-fix work.
  • HPE gives a standard draw of 14.3 kW continuous and 16.4 kW peak per system, from supplies on 200–240 V AC.
  • The 2 TB memory minimum forces two DIMMs per channel, so memory runs at 5200 MT/s, not the 6400 MT/s the DIMMs and processors are rated for.
  • No hardware RAID, no iLO and no GPU choice, and exactly eight E1.S drives of one size are mandatory.
  • The only operating system the QuickSpecs list is Canonical Ubuntu 24.04.

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots on eight channels per processor. HPE sets a 2 TB floor — thirty-two 64 GB modules — which means two DIMMs per channel and a 5200 MT/s interface; 6400 MT/s needs one DIMM per channel, and that configuration cannot reach the minimum.

  • The practical ceiling is 3 TB with thirty-two 96 GB modules. HPE quotes a theoretical 4 TB with 128 GB DIMMs, but lists no 128 GB kit and expects shortages to keep one out of reach.
  • Only two kits are listed — 64 GB (S6V47A) and 96 GB (S6V48A), both dual-rank x4 DDR5-6400 — and they cannot be mixed.
  • HPE’s performance guidance is sixteen DIMMs per processor, two per channel — the population that sets the 5200 MT/s speed.
04 — Storage

2 drive-cage kits, up to 8 bays

Storage has a fixed shape: exactly eight E1.S NVMe drives, all the same capacity, which the firmware expects in every configuration. Up to two 1.92 TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs can be added, and there is no hardware RAID controller.

  • HPE Compute XD 1.92 TB NVMe Read Intensive M.2 2280 SSD (S6V50A), up to 2 on a single carrier card (the document does not explicitly label it a boot device) — boot
  • E1.S options: 1.92 TB (S6V51A), 3.84 TB (S6V52A) and 7.68 TB (S6X01A), all NVMe Read Intensive and self-encrypting.
  • The Version 4 change log says the SFF quantity rule was changed to a one-drive minimum, but the current feature table and order step both require eight; this page follows the current text.
  • HPE contradicts itself on the M.2 part: S6V50A is named as a 1.92 TB M.2 SSD and can be ordered twice, yet a note calls it the M.2 controller/carrier from which the SSDs are separate. No other carrier part is listed.
  • HPE states that the XD690 does not support hardware RAID controllers, and no NS204i boot device or VROC option appears either.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

The GPU is not a choice: every XD690 carries the NVIDIA HGX B300 288 GB 8-GPU Air Cooled board (S6A37A), which HPE describes as eight Blackwell Ultra SXM6 GPUs and supplies only as a factory-installed option. The InfiniBand XDR or Spectrum-X fabric runs through eight ConnectX-8 devices built into the HGX board, and HPE supports no extra CX8 cards. Two PCIe positions — FHHL for DPUs or HHHL for NICs — carry north–south networking, and at least one adapter is required.

  • North–south options: NVIDIA BF3 3240 air-cooling DPU (S6F44A), HPE NDR/Ethernet 400 Gb 1-port QSFP112 PCIe5 x16 adapter (S5R60A) and Intel E810-XXVDA2 2 × 10/25 GbE (P08443-B21).
  • Up to eight transceivers: 400G QSFP112 multi-mode (50 m), 400Gb OSFP multi-mode (50 m) or 800 GbE XDR OSFP single-mode (500 m).
  • HPE asks for at least one north–south card to provide RJ-45 management connectivity, naming the BF3 DPU or a “CX-7 card”, while the interface list also shows two dedicated 1 Gb RJ-45 management ports.

How the XD690 compares with its family

The XD690 drops “ProLiant” from its name but sits beside the ProLiant Compute XD685, the other eight-GPU XD system on this site — AMD EPYC, 5U or 6U and mostly liquid-cooled, with four GPU boards. The XD230 is a CPU-only 1U HPC node, while the DL380a Gen12 (4U, Xeon 6) and DL384 Gen12 (2U, GH200) are HPE’s Gen12 routes to GPUs outside it.

Three XD690 builds. The chassis, GPU board, supplies and drive count are fixed, so they differ only in processor, DIMM size, drive capacity and north–south networking. All pass the configurator’s XD690 checks, and each list notes the fixed items HPE bundles.

Training jobs that stage data locally want the practical memory ceiling and the largest drives: thirty-two 96 GB DIMMs give 3 TB, and eight 7.68 TB E1.S drives give 61.44 TB of self-encrypting scratch. The 6776P adds the higher clocks — 3.6 GHz all-core and 4.6 GHz on eight priority cores.

Where GPU memory matters more than host memory, the 2 TB floor — thirty-two 64 GB modules — is enough, and 3.84 TB E1.S drives give 30.72 TB for model weights and checkpoints. The 6767P gives up peak clock for a slightly higher 2.4 GHz base.

What is the HPE Compute XD690?

A 10U air-cooled AI system from HPE with a single two-socket Intel Xeon 6 node and an eight-GPU NVIDIA HGX B300 board. HPE aims it at large-model training, tuning and inference, and ships it pre-racked by default.

Which GPU does the XD690 use?

There is one option: the NVIDIA HGX B300 288 GB 8-GPU Air Cooled board (S6A37A), which HPE describes as eight Blackwell Ultra SXM6 GPUs and installs at the factory. The QuickSpecs give no per-GPU power figure.

Is the XD690 liquid-cooled?

No. It is an air-cooled design; HPE lists air dam kits for 42U and 48U racks and offers its Adaptive Rack Cooling System and Rear Door Heat Exchanger as options. For a liquid-cooled eight-GPU HPE server, see the XD685.

How much memory does the XD690 take?
