01 — Overview

The SE455 V3 at a glance

Our read of Lenovo’s documentation: where the SE455 V3 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • At 440 mm deep, with rail kits for two-post, 600 mm and 1000 mm racks, it is shorter than a conventional rack server and built for tight spaces.
  • Every external connection and hot-swap part — six full-height PCIe slots, the OCP slot, management and USB ports, the four hot-swap drives and both supplies — is at the front.
  • A limited configuration runs from 5 °C to 55 °C, NEBS Level 3 configurations are built on the PN processors, and a −48 V DC supply sits alongside the AC options.
  • Accelerator capacity is six single-wide NVIDIA L4 GPUs or AMD Alveo V70 cards, or two double-wide L40S, and the SE455i V3 is available as a fixed factory inference build.
  • Tamper detection with System Lockdown, an intrusion switch, a lockable cover and bezel, and security EIA brackets protect a server installed outside a secure data centre.

Watch-outs

  • Lenovo’s guide is inconsistent on SAS: its drive-bay rules say SAS drives are currently not supported, yet it lists 24 Gb SAS SSDs, quotes a SAS capacity and gives SAS temperature limits. Confirm SAS status with Lenovo before ordering; no hard disks are listed.
  • Memory stops at six DIMM slots and 768 GB at 4800 MHz, and the 96 GB and 128 GB DIMMs drop out of support above 45 °C.
  • The internal drive cage is not hot-swap: the server does not support in-rack servicing, so reaching those drives means shutting it down and taking it out of the rack.
  • Double-wide L40S GPUs force the 1U heatsink, a processor of 130 W or less, 40 °C maximum ambient and no acoustic mode, and may need 1800 W supplies.
  • Processors and heatsinks are factory-fitted with no field upgrade path, and XCC2 Platinum power capping is not supported.

  • Lenovo’s summary tables quote TDP ratings of up to 225 W, but the highest TDP in its processor list is 200 W, for the 8434P and 8534P.
  • Above 45 °C the standard P processors with 24 or more cores drop out, and at 55 °C the 16-core 8124P goes too, leaving the 8024P and the PN parts; at 55 °C the 48- and 64-core PN parts also require Riser 2 to be absent.
  • The 2U heatsink is the default, and Lenovo recommends it to maximise heat dissipation and keep fan noise down. The 1U heatsink is needed for full-length adapters and limits the processor to 130 W and ambient to 45 °C.
  • Every listed EPYC 8004 has six DDR5 channels at 4800 MHz and presents 96 PCIe lanes, a mix of Gen4 and Gen5.
  • In acoustic modes Lenovo recommends only lower-power parts with the 2U heatsink: in Mode 1 the 8024P, 8124P and PN models up to 32 cores, and in Mode 2 the 8024P, 8024PN and 8124PN.
03 — Memory

6 DDR5 DIMM slots

Six DDR5 slots, one per channel, run at up to 4800 MHz. Lenovo supports 1, 2, 4 or 6 DIMMs and recommends six identical modules; with 128 GB DIMMs the ceiling is 768 GB.

  • Five RDIMMs are listed: 16 GB and 32 GB x8, 64 GB and 96 GB 10x4, and a 128 GB module rated 5600 MHz that runs at 4800 MHz.
  • DRAM densities (16, 24 and 32 Gb) cannot be combined, nor can x4 and x8 modules, though different capacities or rank counts may share the server when fitted in Lenovo’s order, larger and higher-rank modules first.
  • Temperature trims the list: 96 GB and 128 GB DIMMs are unsupported at 50 °C, and at 55 °C only the 16 GB and 32 GB modules remain.
  • Protection includes ECC and Advanced Memory Device Correction (x4 DIMMs); memory mirroring and rank sparing are not supported.
04 — Storage

4 backplane options, up to 8 bays

Drives are split between four hot-swap 2.5-inch bays at the front and an optional cage of four more inside, which tilts up for access but is not hot-swap. Each group takes SATA or NVMe SSDs through its own backplane, and the headline layouts below draw the front and internal bays together.

  • ThinkSystem M.2 RAID B540i-2i SATA/NVMe Adapter (BZPA) - integrated Broadcom RAID 0/1 — boot
  • Only one SATA controller is allowed, and it serves front and internal SATA bays alike: the onboard ports (up to eight drives) or a single 440-8i HBA, RAID 540-8i or RAID 940-8i in slot 4, 5, 7 or 8.
  • On SAS the guide gives two readings. Its front and internal drive-bay rules say SAS drives are currently not supported and would need a RAID adapter or SAS HBA once they are. Elsewhere it lists 24 Gb SAS SSDs from 800 GB to 30.72 TB, quotes 245.76 TB with eight 30.72 TB SAS SSDs and includes SAS drives in its temperature table. The layouts on this page use SATA and NVMe, which both readings support.
  • Lenovo’s NVMe headline is 737.28 TB with four 122.88 TB plus four 61.44 TB drives. Its drive table caps both of those models at four per server, so the 491.52 TB it also quotes for eight 61.44 TB drives does not match the table.
  • Up to two M.2 boot drives sit on a vertical adapter: the M.2 RAID B540i-2i with built-in RAID 0 or 1, or the 2-bay SATA/x4 NVMe adapter, whose NVMe drives use an onboard port and whose SATA drives need a RAID 5350-8i that is not in the server’s storage adapter table.
  • Heat limits bite hardest inside the chassis: internal SATA drives are unsupported at 50 °C and above and internal NVMe drives are limited to named models from 40 °C, while front SATA drives stay supported all the way to 55 °C.

  • Slots are half-length by default. Full-length cards fit only the upper two slots of each riser (3 and 4, 6 and 7), and only with the 1U heatsink.
  • One double-wide GPU goes in slot 7 with slot 6 left empty; two go in slots 3 and 7, with slots 4 and 6 left empty.
  • A COM-port bracket in slot 5 adds an RS-232 serial port.
  • OCP adapters run from 1 to 100 GbE, PCIe NICs reach the ConnectX-7 NDR200/200GbE, and every PCIe NIC in the table is supported up to six per server; Fibre Channel comes from QLogic QLE2770 and QLE2772 32 Gb HBAs.
  • Front ports: two USB 3.1 Type-A, one USB-C with video (a USB-C-to-VGA cable is included), a USB 2.0 port for XCC local management, the RJ45 management port, an external diagnostics port and an NMI pinhole. Dust covers for the ports are standard.
  • Factory orders can include at most four cables, or two with the security bezel, because of space in the packaging.
06 — Power & cooling

4 power supplies, 1,100–1,800 W

One or two hot-swap supplies mount at the front with fans that turn the opposite way to other ThinkSystem supplies, which are therefore not supported. Options are 1100 W Titanium, 1100 W and 1800 W Platinum and an 1100 W −48 V DC unit, and a pair must be identical.

  • The 1100 W Platinum supply is the one named for both 230 V and 115 V input. On 100–127 V an 1100 W supply draws up to 12 A and needs a power cable rated above 10 A; the 1800 W unit does not support low-range input.
  • On 200–240 V the 1100 W units draw 6.0 A and the 1800 W unit 10 A; in China, 240 V DC input is supported.
  • The DC supply takes −44 to −54 V DC at 26 A inlet current.
  • Builds with L40S GPUs may need the 1800 W supplies; Lenovo points to its Capacity Planner for sizing other configurations.
  • Five 60 mm dual-rotor simple-swap fans give N+1 rotor redundancy.
  • Two grounding points on the front take Lenovo’s 6 AWG grounding cable, sold only as a field upgrade.

How the SE455 V3 compares with its family

The SE100, a one-third-width 1U node with an Intel Core Ultra processor, is a smaller ThinkEdge option. The SE455 V3 shares its single-socket AMD layout with the ThinkSystem SR635 V3 and SR655 V3 rack servers, which use EPYC 9004 and 9005 instead of 8004, and the matrix adds the SD535 V3 sled; each bar comes from that server’s verified spec file.

Short-depth virtualisation host

A 32-core EPYC 8324P with six 64 GB DIMMs gives a 384 GB hypervisor host that fits a 600 mm cabinet. Four front NVMe drives form the datastore on onboard ports — Lenovo lists vSAN ESA support — and two M.2 drives on the B540i-2i adapter mirror the boot volume.

  • 1 × AMD EPYC 8324P — 32 cores @ 2.65 GHz, 180 W
  • 6 × 64 GB TruDDR5 4800 MHz — 384 GB
  • 4 × 3.84 TB NVMe in the front hot-swap bays
  • 2 × 480 GB M.2 on the M.2 RAID B540i-2i (RAID 1)
  • Intel E810-DA4 4 × 25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1100 W Titanium

55 °C −48 V DC build

For a cabinet that can reach 55 °C, the build follows the 55 °C column of Lenovo’s temperature table: a NEBS-compliant EPYC 8534PN, 32 GB DIMMs, front SATA SSDs and an OCP card that stays supported at that temperature, all on the −48 V DC supply.

  • 1 × AMD EPYC 8534PN — 64 cores @ 2 GHz, 175 W
  • 6 × 32 GB TruDDR5 4800 MHz — 192 GB
  • 4 × 960 GB SATA SSD in the front bays, onboard SATA
  • Intel E810-DA4 4 × 25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1100 W −48 V DC
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

At 55 °C the 8534PN is supported only without Riser 2, so this build stays on Riser 1; M.2 drives and internal SATA drives are unsupported at that temperature and only a few named NVMe models are allowed inside, so this build has no internal cage and boots from the front SSDs. The 55 °C range applies to limited configurations only, and we confirm the exact build with Lenovo.

Dual L40S inference server

Two double-wide NVIDIA L40S 48 GB cards, the maximum, sit in slots 3 and 7 for larger vision or language models at the edge. Their rules shape the rest of the build: a processor of 130 W or less, here the 32-core EPYC 8324PN, the 1U heatsink and no acoustic mode, with 1800 W supplies because Lenovo says the L40S may need them.

  • 1 × AMD EPYC 8324PN — 32 cores @ 2.05 GHz, 130 W
  • 2 × NVIDIA L40S 48 GB, double-wide, slots 3 and 7
  • 6 × 64 GB TruDDR5 4800 MHz — 384 GB
  • 4 × 7.68 TB NVMe in the front bays
  • 2 × 480 GB M.2 on the M.2 RAID B540i-2i
  • Intel E810-DA2 2 × 25GbE OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1800 W Platinum
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

The L40S is supported only up to 40 °C ambient, and with two fitted, slots 4 and 6 must stay empty. Lenovo says the L40S may need 1800 W supplies depending on configuration, and the 1800 W unit needs 200–240 V input.

SE455i V3-style dual-L4 build

This follows the main components of Lenovo’s SE455i V3 Inference Model: a 64-core EPYC 8534P, six 96 GB DIMMs (576 GB), two NVIDIA L4 24 GB GPUs, one 3.84 TB NVMe drive, a 480 GB M.2 boot drive on the B540i-2i adapter, a Broadcom 57416 10GBASE-T OCP card and two 1800 W supplies. The factory version is ordered as feature CF16 with its major components fixed.

  • 1 × AMD EPYC 8534P — 64 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 200 W
  • 2 × NVIDIA L4 24 GB, single-wide
  • 6 × 96 GB TruDDR5 4800 MHz — 576 GB
  • 1 × 3.84 TB NVMe in a front bay
  • 1 × 480 GB M.2 on the M.2 RAID B540i-2i
  • Broadcom 57416 2 × 10GBASE-T OCP 3.0
  • 2 × 1800 W Platinum
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Lenovo’s SE455i V3 bill of materials sets a 5–40 °C operating range and includes XCC Platinum and a 600 mm rail kit. Built from separate parts, as here, the configuration is not locked, so drives and memory can be expanded later. Lenovo’s fixed build specifies a PCIe 5.0 PM9D3a SSD and a SATA M.2 drive; the drives here come from our configurator’s list and are different models.

11 — FAQ

SE455 V3 questions, answered from the documentation

How deep is the ThinkEdge SE455 V3?

440 mm, or 438 mm measured back from the rack flange, in a 2U chassis 445 mm wide. Lenovo offers rail kits for two-post racks, 600 mm four-post racks and 1000 mm four-post racks.

What temperatures can the SE455 V3 run at?

Most configurations meet ASHRAE A2 (10–35 °C), and others meet A3 (5–40 °C) or A4 (5–45 °C). Limited configurations run from 5 °C to 55 °C, with processors, memory, GPUs and drives progressively restricted in Lenovo’s temperature table.

Does the SE455 V3 support SAS drives?

Lenovo’s guide gives two readings. Its drive-bay rules say SAS drives are currently not supported and would need a RAID adapter or SAS HBA once they are, while other tables list 24 Gb SAS SSDs and quote 245.76 TB with eight 30.72 TB SAS drives. SATA and NVMe SSDs are supported in the front and internal bays under either reading, so confirm SAS with Lenovo before ordering; no hard disks are listed.

How many drives does the SE455 V3 hold?

Eight 2.5-inch SSDs: four hot-swap bays at the front and an optional cage of four internal bays that are not hot-swap. Two M.2 boot drives sit on a vertical adapter.

What is the maximum memory of the SE455 V3?

768 GB, using six 128 GB DIMMs in its six slots, one per channel, running at 4800 MHz. Above 45 °C ambient the 96 GB and 128 GB DIMMs are no longer supported.

Which processors does the SE455 V3 support?

One AMD EPYC 8004 from twelve models with 8 to 64 cores. The six PN models are NEBS Level 3 compliant enhanced-efficiency parts from 80 W to 175 W; the six standard P models run from 90 W to 200 W. Processors are installed at the factory only.

How many GPUs can the SE455 V3 take?

Up to six single-wide NVIDIA L4 GPUs or AMD Alveo V70 accelerators, or two double-wide NVIDIA L40S in slots 3 and 7. The L40S requires the 1U heatsink, a processor of 130 W or less and ambient no higher than 40 °C.

Can the SE455 V3 run on DC power?

Yes: Lenovo offers an 1100 W −48 V DC hot-swap supply that takes −44 to −54 V DC. Two supplies must be identical, so a redundant pair means two DC units.

What is the SE455i V3?

It is not separate hardware but a fixed SE455 V3 configuration for AI inference, ordered on the “for AI” base with feature CF16: an EPYC 8534P, 576 GB of memory, two NVIDIA L4 GPUs, one 3.84 TB NVMe drive, a 480 GB M.2 drive and two 1800 W supplies, with the major components locked.

Is the ThinkEdge SE455 V3 end of life?

Lenovo’s product guide sets no end-of-service date for the SE455 V3 and lists operating systems up to VMware ESXi 9.1 and Ubuntu 26.04. Cover for an installed server follows its warranty or service contract; our end-of-life checker records any announcement.
