01 — Overview

The SR650i V4 at a glance

Our read of Lenovo’s documentation: where the SR650i V4 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • 192 GB of GPU memory from a pair of RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition cards from NVIDIA, each running in Lenovo’s full 600 W configuration.
  • One feature code (CF3G) pulls in the whole bill of materials, so the 600 W risers, 24K Ultra fans and 3200 W supplies arrive already matched to the GPUs.
  • The GPUs sit in front risers, leaving the rear PCIe 5.0 risers and both OCP 3.0 slots for networking and storage adapters.
  • It is ordered on the SR650a V4’s own machine types (7DGD three-year, 7DGC one-year), with the same XClarity Controller 3 management and Root of Trust security.
  • Lenovo documents a field change for the SR650a V4 chassis that moves the RTX PRO 6000 between two cards at 600 W and four at 450 W.

Watch-outs

  • Processors, GPUs, memory, drives and the network adapter are fixed in the order; any other mix means configuring an SR650a V4 instead.
  • Only eight DIMMs are fitted — four per processor against eight channels each — while Lenovo’s own guidance for best performance is to populate every channel.
  • Local storage is light: two 3.84 TB NVMe drives in an 8-bay backplane, and the chassis offers no 3.5-inch, mid-chassis or rear drive bays.
  • The 3200 W supplies are 230 V only with C20 inlets, and Lenovo specifies the build for a 25 °C data-centre environment.
  • At 924 mm deep the chassis is longer than the SR650 V4’s 796 mm, ships on Long Travel rails and has no front security bezel option.

Both sockets hold the Xeon 6 6530P, a 32-core, 64-thread 6500-series P-core processor with a 2.3 GHz base and 4.1 GHz turbo, 144 MB of L3 cache and a 225 W TDP. It runs RDIMMs at up to 6400 MHz but does not support MRDIMMs, and each one contributes 88 PCIe lanes to a platform whose slots are all PCIe 5.0.

The chassis has 32 DIMM slots — 16 per processor, eight channels with two DIMMs each — but the Inference Model fixes memory at eight 64 GB TruDDR5 RDIMMs rated at 6400 MHz: 512 GB, four DIMMs per processor. The capacity chart shows what the slots could hold with every one filled.

  • For the SR650a V4 chassis Lenovo requires identical DIMMs and the same count on each processor; its 64 GB 2Rx4 RDIMM is listed at 1, 4, 8, 12 or 16 per processor.
  • The SR650a V4 platform reaches 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB 3DS RDIMMs, which lies outside the fixed Inference Model.
  • The fitted modules are x4-based (2Rx4), so ECC, SDDC and ADDDC protection apply, and memory mirroring is available.

Storage is deliberately light: an 8-bay 2.5-inch Gen5 NVMe backplane holding two 3.84 TB read-intensive U.2 drives, and a mirrored pair of 960 GB M.2 boot drives on the internal B550i-2i. The other six front bays are left empty.

  • The B550i-2i accepts NVMe M.2 drives only, links each over one PCIe 4.0 lane, and defaults to RAID 1 with two drives; its M.2 drives are not hot-swap.
  • Onboard NVMe RAID uses Intel VROC under a separate licence, and no VROC licence appears in the Inference Model bill of materials.
  • Front hot-swap M.2 is offered only on SR650a V4 E3.S layouts, so it is not part of this 2.5-inch build.
  • The SR650a V4 chassis has no 3.5-inch, E3.S 2T (CXL), mid-chassis or rear drive bays.

GPUs, PCIe and networking

The SR650a V4 platform mounts GPUs only in its front risers. In the 600 W configuration Lenovo allows two RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition cards, in slots 21 and 23, each on a 600 W riser with the 600 W riser cage, air duct and 24K Ultra fans; capped at 450 W, the same card can run four to a server. 2 × RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell 96 GB at 600 W — fixed in this model.

Each 6530P provides 88 PCIe lanes and eight memory channels, and every slot is PCIe 5.0. Front Riser 7 (slots 20–23) is wired to CPU 1 and Riser 6 (slots 16–19) to CPU 2; at the rear, Riser 2 (slots 3–5) belongs to CPU 1 and Riser 3 (slots 6–8) to CPU 2. Risers 1 and 4 are not used on this chassis.

  • The Inference Model fits the x16 rear direct riser for slot 5, and its Broadcom 57414 25GbE card is a PCIe adapter rather than an OCP module.

  • CRPS Premium adds zero-output (cold redundancy) standby, more accurate power metering, virtual reseat and a system cooling assist that can override fan speed.

How the SR650i V4 compares with its family

The SR650i V4 is one fixed build of the SR650a V4, which in open configuration takes up to four double-wide or eight single-wide front GPUs. The SR650 V4 is the 2U sibling that swaps front GPUs for up to 40 drive bays and GPUs in its rear slots, while the 8U SR680a V4 and the 3U AMD-based SR675 V3 are Lenovo’s larger GPU platforms. Bar values come from the individual spec files.
